View Full Version : Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future

For those who don't know, Captain Power was a TV show and a line of toys in the 80s. You'd buy these sci-fi fighter planes toys and you could actually play with the TV show; bad guys would have these flashing spots on them and you could shoot them with the plane (it worked like a light gun, had a handle, trigger and everything) and you'd get points. When the bad guys would shoot someone, the whole screen would flash and if your plane was pointed at the screen you'd take damage. If you took enough damage, your action figure would be ejected out of the cockpit. It was the coolest fucking thing ever. Kicks the crap out of toys these days.
The show itself was actually pretty good. The toy stuff was unrelated to the live action show. You couold play if you want but it wasn't really related. However, the show always ended with a ripoff from the descent to the Death Star from Star Wars playing with the credits. You'd go through this tunnel and there'd be things you have to shoot, but there'd be guns shooting at you. It was the funnest thing ever.
And they sold animated tapes where you'd be part of an actual mission. I wasted countless hours on these tapes. I must have worn those tapes out.
And one of the writers of the show was J. Michael Strazynski. The show was actually quite good. It only lasted two seasons. Was there anyone esle hooked on these toys and TV show? I was obviously obssessed,

Yes I remember it. I didn't have the gun/plane. I was a bit too old at the time, just getting out of toys.
It should be noted that it was written by

Yes, I remember that show/game/toy/whatever.
I never actually had one of my own, but one of my friends had it and I would go over to his house and play it endlessly.
I don't think I ever watched the show, just played with the home videos.

i remember it had a sort of terminator theme. machines ruled the world and such. and there was a human traitor who worked with the machines, in a sort of Baltar role.

I can't believe someone remembers this other than me. i never got into it (it seemed like a bastardization of lazer tag to me) but it looked cool.

I just sold my entire collection on ebay.

In retrospect, I see that the whole thing was one big marketing ploy to get kids to buy toys, and I bought it hook, line and sinker. But I still have fond memories. It was fun, and I guess that's all that matters.

these toys took up a lot of my time for a while there in the 80's. Wasn't there a ghost house game you could play using the captain power plane/light gun? I seem to remember that too.
written by J. Michael Straczynski who went on to write Babylon 5 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105946/).
