I heard this on Jim Rome last night- I haven't found a good enough link yet.

30 years ago yesterday, The California Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 15 innings. In the game Nolan Ryan struck out 19 batters including Cecil Cooper 6 times in a row. Almost as impressively he managed to walk 10 batters. This of course mattered little to the manager of the Angels as Ryan ended up pitching for 13 innings. Over his 13 innings of work, he threw 235 pitches. I'll say it again for effect. 235 pitches. He ended up with a no-decision.

Luis Tiant started for the Red Sox and went the distance (14 and 1/3 innings). While there was no official pitch count on Tiant, it's estimated he threw 190 pitches. An awful lot of work to take a loss.

Anyway I don't think 2 starters will ever again combine for 27 and a third innings, 425 pitches, and I don't know when we'll see a 'double-double' like 19 K, 10 BB like Ryan posted. As for some sap posting 6 K in a row to the same pitcher in the same game; actually yeah, that probably will happen.

That is amazing. Time to start searching ebay for a game tape. I mean trading cards and we'll just happen to throw in this awesome video.

Found it! (http://www.cincypost.com/2004/06/15/base06-15-2004.html) A good article about the game from the Cincinatti Post.

though now, thats a rediculously impressive stat, its skewed a little by the fact that in the old days of baseball, part of the pride of pitching was finishing your games. guys would start every 3 days and finish win or lose.
thats why cy young is not only the winningest, but also losingest pitcher, if thast a word, or all time

for now, you gotta hand it to him, but if our athletes were conditioned to pitch like they used to condition guys to pitch, and if they werent so expensive, games like that whould happen every couple months

nolan ryan's an absolute freak of nature, but this just goes to show you how mental pitching is. guys leave after 100 pitches today and STILL get arm problems. if they could mentally condition themselves to go 9 innings regardless of pitch count, a lot of middle relievers would be out of work.

Back in the day pitch counts were meaningless. I remember going to see a Yankees-White Sox doubleheader and Wilbur Wood of the Sox started both games.

LEARN THAT POEM!

nolan ryan's an absolute freak of nature,

Damn right. Roger Maris, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds: owners of the 4 greatest home run hitting seasons in history. Nolan Ryan? Only man to strike out all 4.

27 and a 3rd innings? I dont remember the last time I saw a starter pitch in extra innings...425 pitches? Never again...hell I doubt theyll combine for as much as 300...

Nolan Ryan wasnt even that good a pitcher if you think about it. He was just a guy who could throw over 100 MPH, however he had no location. Even with all that, hitters were just scared to hit his stuff...hell I doubt they even saw his stuff...Forget that type of baseball game ever happening again and forget seeing another guy like Nolan Ryan strut out there and just chuck the ball as hard as he can.
