this may sound corny but LOWES and HOME DEPOT offer easy classes ( i think they may be free) on how to do that stuff since D-I-Y is so popular now- they show you how to do whatever task needs to be done.....

I have done carpet, but I cheated. I removed the rug and padding, but left the existing tackless. None the less, after I kicked it in, it came out quite nicely.
As for tile, NO!
But I have done 2 rooms worth of Pergo That is the shit , Jeff!! If you want your floors standing tall, GO PERGO.
If you want tips on that shit, PM me.

Home Depot's "How to lay floor" (http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=NAVIGATION&CNTKEY=services/athomeservices/installation_flooring.jsp&cm_ven=ahs_over&cm_cat=Search&cm_pla=&cm_ite=KW_Gpd-Ov-FL-DI-No-1D-Ge-Ex)
good luck!
EDIT: Actually looking at the site, it seems to be more like "How to pay us to come do it for you" So nevermind.

Jeff,
As for laying tile in the kitchen what kind of tile? That self adhesive tile or real ceramic tile with grout and everything.
If your doing it yourself, take a measurement of the entire floor you wish to tile. Finding the length and width of the floor, from these measurements snap a chalk line to fine the exact center of the room. (Note there should be two chalk lines one for the width and one for the length).
After you have the chalk lines down lay the tile from the intersecting lines center out, making the cuts when you get to walks and cabinets.
Make floor is clean and dry, if you are laying on existing floor.
However, if your doing ceramic tiles, you will have to rip up the old flooring, replace any damage to the subfloor, making sure that floor is clean and level.
Then you would have to snap a chalk line and follow directions above except that you will have to use adhesive to the floor and each tile. For custom tile cuts you would need a water saw with a diamond blade for cutting the tile.
If it sounds like to much trouble hire two mexicans for a twelve pack of corona and a hundred bucks. They do fine work!!!
