I was disappointed with "The Chronicles of Riddick" the way I was with John Carpenter's "Escape From L.A.", good lead character lost in a big stupid movie. I love Riddick the way I love Snake Plisken, tough anti-heroes that set the pace of a series. The good thing is that Vin Diesel fits the action mold and rocks the screen every time he is in the action. The bad thing is the storyline that is so chopped from other scripts like "Mad Max", "Stargate" and even the classic bad film "Battlefield Earth".
This is a sequel to "Pitch Black" and is a few years later, Riddick is still a fugitive and wanted by bounty hunters (New York actor Nick Chinlund is going to be around for future sequels). A total baddass, Riddick is from a race of people called Furians, they are few but the toughest guys in the galaxy. The Necromongers are invaders that take over other planets and make the people one of them (a direct dig against Bush, one of the leaders of the planet is a Muslim). Riddick wants out but he is not a guy to push around, he wants to find his ward Kyra on a prison planet. Riddick must fight!
Director-writer David Twohy is at fault for doing stupid things like fight sequences that use wires, every person that gets hit flys about 30 ft, and the prison planet (700 degrees) has about 12 people on it(?). A subplot rip-off from Shakespeare's "Macbeth" (very beautiful Thadie Newton doing Eartha Kitt). The design of the film looks fine and the F/X are good enough, but the midsection of the film is boring. Maybe Twohy can get the story going into another direction the next time out. BTJ says "You want my help to save the world!....Make better movies! BAMMMMMM"

No mention of Damn Judi Denche? I heard that is was VERY important to get her to play her role.

Was that the guy from Pitch Black, excuse me, "The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black", Who was the muslim and he also played the dad in "Something about Mary"?
So, is Vin Desel a big star or something? Are he and The Rock the next generation of action heros?

Necromongers are invaders that take over other planets and make the people one of them (a direct dig against Bush, one of the leaders of the planet is a Muslim).
I don't even know how you could possibly conceive that this was a dig against Bush.
I'm kind of stunned that out of that big, muddled plot, this is the thing that stuck out for you.
I saw the flick, and thought it was good for what it was: a b-movie scifi/action flick with a big budget. It was both better and worse, in different regards, than Pitch Black. But they do set themselves up for sequels (simply because so much doesn't get explained), and hell, I'll probably watch them if they get made.
Was that the guy from Pitch Black, excuse me, "The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black", Who was the muslim and he also played the dad in "Something about Mary"?
Yes. The actor's name is Keith David, and he's been in a bunch of fun stuff. You may remember him as the guy Roddy Piper fought with in "They Live".

keith david as the muslim was also in the first movie of this series.
one of 3 survivors, so the muslim dig doesn't work since he is a recurring character
and i believe that the "ward" was also in the first movie, as a girl who pretended to be a boy emulating riddick, who also survived.
but i can't be sure, i haven't seen the new movie yet

corrected to Anti-heroes
but the Bush dig is funny..an all powerful military nation comes to a new planet to change the souls of the population by blowing up the city...sounds familiar

actually the muslim is the turning point. this is going to be a trilogy from what i've read about it. these that i've read are all rumors though.
but (on the chance) that the Imam lives in this second movie, he is supposed to be the one who redeems riddick.
spiritual leader... bad man.... trilogy.... just seems right.

I saw it last night and enjoyed it as well. Great F/X and they plot line made total sense to me, so I'm not sure how you came to your conslusion Little Tony.
Keith David's character was not a leader of his planet, and he was from the first, which was made before Bush became president, so your whole dig against Bush theory doesn't take.
The prison planet doesn't have a lot of people on it because it is a prison planet! A very unhospitable planet at that.
Thandie Newton...HOT!
I would give this movie a B+. The only harsh critisism I would point out is some awfuly cheesy dialouge that was unecessary.

Christ.
You're REALLY stretching here. I'm taking WAFER-THIN premise.
Sometimes things just are what they are - and the Necromongers aren't representations of America. I sincerely doubt that when Twohy wrote the script for it, he rubbed his hands together and cackled about what a wonderful little dig he got in on the Bush Administration.

i saw it, and my expectations were lived up to. alot made sense if you saw the first movie. the only thing i didn't care for was the fight scenes. to 70's for me with the style of camera work. when the fight was going on it was shaky and camera moved around to much.
as for a boring part. there was 20 minutes of slowed down portion, but i thought it added to the story and only at the last 2 minutes i got bored.
not a great movie, but i'll buy the dvd. and i'll watch it on tv anytime it's on.
