Ok so i get a call from GMAC about a payment being late and i'm greeted with,"Hello sir, this is Russell Johnson from GMAC calling about your account." Ok now re-read that sentence and apply your best Apu from the Simpsons impersonation.
Now I really don't take too many things seriously, but aside from the W.A.S.P. name that my little indian friend gave himself, i'm pretty disappointed that an american company such as GM would outsource jobs to india. Especially when many consumers such as myself make it a point to buy american. (i know that someone will point out that alot of the cars may be assembled elsewhere but that's not the point.)
I know it essentially much more cost effective to pay my indian friend on the phone like 5 dollars a day as compared to whatever the average american that works for them may get payed here but still. It's just annoys me that I see people everyday out of work with no way to provide for their families yet OUR jobs are being shipped overseas. Pretty depressing if you ask me. I guess I would rather see the real Russell Johnson able to live his life than my little indian friend.
It just seems to me that nobody really cares about this issue. How is this even legal? Aren't there any politicians lobbying against this practice? And how do you all feel about this? Discuss.

What makes you think Mr. Johnson was calling from India? Perhaps he is an Indian immigrant trying to realize his American Dream. He could well be a naturalized, tax-paying, voting American.

830,000 jobs gone (http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=20301331)
These are service jobs, and one of the main culprits is GE. This is a huge problem in the tech industry (which I happen to work in). Many jobs in programing are being outsourced to india to save corporations money. Many people say the work that comes back is of a much lower quality.

60 Minutes did a piece a while back on exactly this. Computer Tech Support, your Credit Cards, Banking, and others are indeed not only people in India, but people in India who are trained to 'americanize' their english, and use fake names that are more American. Go off the script and ask them what teams they like or something; deer in the headlights, or they give some generic answer.
It was great; they were like a group of Impersonators, and some were amazing.

outsourcing is truly scary, i was indeed part of it when i went to india for 2 months to do a microsoft certification course that would have cost $10,000 in the usa, but cost $4,000 in india including tavel+accomodation.
in india all schools teach in english, and the average call centre wage is about twice that of a doctor or lawyer, so they get the very brightest, which is a contast to the west, but their accent is really harsh and that is the only thing keeping call centre jobs in developed countries. now if they had a soft scottish or irish accent, that would be scary

Some of the major accounting companies were sending US citizens tax forms over to India to get done in time. They can do it cheaper than here in the US. The problem was identity theft. Sending all this personal information all over the place is not a good thing. Many people complained, but I am not sure if anyone was listening.

Like Mike said, it's going to be a rarity soon to hear an accent. They're teaching the foreign workers to pull off an American accent THAT well. And they just have HUGE complexes where they make these calls, each companies just having their own little "corners."
And how is this outsourcing actually effecting our economy? The talk is everything up, and the joblessness rate is actually lowering. I'm confused as to what we're actually losing here...are these jobs that existed here that are now gone, or jobs that were CREATED overseas?

Normally I would offer a witty response. However, I have asked my associates in India to craft a clever rejoinder.
Unfortunately, it's a little after 10:00 PM there and offices are only open from 8:00 AM until 7:00 PM.
I look forward to viewing my response during normal business hours.

Absolutely not. I have a Bachelor's in computer science, and after the Company I used to work for went under because they couldn't afford to compete, I haven't been able to find a single programming job, that's not a crappy couple of month contract job. Why? because these corporations can hire Indians at $.20 on the dollar over the internet, so I have to work 2 jobs, about 17-18 hours a day to make ends meet, so there's your joblessness going down, Mojo...

Now i remember why i was so startled; it was one of those sunday nights where i was stuck in the car driving home, and 7pm rolls around, and 880 WCBS in NYC simulcasts 60 minutes; so I'm listening to whoever did the segment ask what is your real name, and one dude would say 'My real name is Najeef' and then theyd ask to do your American and the same guy, but an Utterly different voice, 'Hey, my name is Bob' or whoever.
I did see a segment on how tough it is to compete with these foreign wages. A furniture making place: most of the workers, are losing their jobs, because its actually Cheaper to:
-Put the Wood on a Boat to China/Korea/wherever.
-They build it or assemble it, and finish it.
-They stick the stuff back on a boat back here.
I know zero about this, I cant even fathom how cheap the labor must be, since the transporataion costs cant be miniscule, but if THAT way continues to be cheaper? Pffffftttt.
That, is truly Surreal.

Outsourcing responsible for 2% of unemployment (http://www.delawareonline.com/newsjournal/business/2004/06/11offshoringcause.html)
As minute a problem as outsourcing is (as this report points out), it is a problem. I am, however, still pro-free trade. As a consumer, I choose to drive a Saturn because I know it's made in the United States. As consumers it is our responsibility to remain loyal to American products and remain informed about the origins of the products we buy.

Are there any "penalties" American countries have to pay for practices like this? Like higher taxes? I'm all for expansive global trade, but there should be some kind of incentive to "work American."

The true insult to America is outsourcing performed inside the US. I think I mentioned this before, but it truly bugs me. Companies using H1b's and J1's to work in the US contracting with US companies.

Just the opposite. Companies can postpone paying taxes on outsourcing or overseas investment for 10 years. That's ten tax-free years.
BTW, it's my liberal duty to note that Kerry would remove that exception, and lower corporate taxes on companies that do not outsource. He would basically provide an incentive to not outsource, though I question how effective it would be.

Apparently numbers CAN be made to say anything...
You working two jobs does NOT double the "non-joblessness" of the employment numbers. It goes by the number of people who work, not the number of jobs.
As for the tax-free nature of outsourced profits, I believe that only applies when the product remains outside the United States- ie. GM opens a factory in China that sells its cars in Asia. (Not 100% on that one, though.)
Kerry's proposal would not in most cases provide any real incentive for companies to come back to the US. The nominal tax breaks and penalties he's proposed would not offset the real savings of moving overseas. This particular proposal is seemingly empty campaign rhetoric.
