The man, then 57 and divorced with children, suddenly stopped coming in to work two decades ago but none of his relatives ever asked police to search for him.

"I had no idea that the apartment even existed," the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper quoted a 65-year-old neighbor as saying.

"After I heard the news, I thought 'Oh, it's here.' It's as if time had stopped in this one place."

wow - i love thoughtful neighbours, even when faced with a story of mortality and dreadful human neglect, right on their doorstep, they can still hold it together enough, to think about the property and it's location first. but i bet you that neighbour just loves furry animals

That is one of the saddest things I have ever read.
He had kids and no one decided to look for him after he died.
That is like a personal nightmare for me.

Just think of what you were doing 15, 10, 5 years ago. Last Tuesday.

He was just laying there. In his pajamas. The sound of traffic in the morning. Children laughing during the day. At night, a dog barks in the distance.

And there he lay. For 20 years.

So the people who came were looking to take the building down to it's skeleton?
The story kinda gives me a boner

I wonder what state of decay he was in, the 5th year.
