I dont know about you, but I get a panic attack when Im in a store that is packed with people. On the weekend we shop at this fruit and vegetable store in Hicksville that is nearly impossible to move around in because the isles are narrow and one cart at a time can fit through and its always so full of people, even at the registers the lines are like 10 deep and while the prices are good, to me its not worth the aggrivation. But women seem to flock to it. Is there something about a crowded store that women seem to get excited about? Like, is it something about seeing other women flocking to that compels a woman want to see that they might be "missing out on"? When I shop, I like to be able to get in and out easy.

I hate crowded places-- especially malls or movie theaters. When I am surrounded by teenagers and their raging hormones, I just want to kill someone.

I really don't shop - I buy. Shopping to me means looking around, trying things on, etc. I just want to get what I need and get the fuck out of there.

i think it's probably that people (and women, specifically, since they normally shop more) want to find the best deals. if there's a big sale somewhere, there will be tons of people there. so, people flock to the crowds because that's where the best shopping probably is. it's not rocket science, just capitalism.

We're social creatures as just about every mammal is [not sure about some friends...], but we're also essentially the same as we were 100,000 years ago. So 'social' meant groups. But these crowds are new to us. You reach a certain population density, one never seen on earth and things can spread, like say, whatever killed a third of Europe during That plague, which is now looking very viral.

Along with the physical ramifications of all these people is the increase in artificial lights, artifical sounds and noises [i got a published piece entirely about mall noise], all the Electromagnetic Radiation we throw around, the weird chemicals that never existed until we synthesized them... add it all up and I'd say what's ailing Modern Society is: modern society.

or not.

Ari, I know what you mean, I guess I just see a crowded place and figure Id rather pay MORE to avoid it than put up with the frustration. Believe me, I can see why some would flock to it, thinking they are missing out and all. I imagine studys were done to see whats more effective to make people spend more when they shop; wide open places or confined areas.

Oh yeah. Thousands upon thousands. The psychology of shopping, purchasing habits, and yep, the physical logistics of the stores themselves.

Hey, what are the common purchases in a supermarket? The ones they place such that you have to walk through the entire store to get to the milk, meat, bread, dairy, produce. Hey sometimes theyre right there when you walk in, but many, many places put the essentials waaaaaaaayy in back. Even the 'convenience' store. They want you walking through the stuff. They want you in that store as long as possible.

The fight for shelf space in the big markets? holy shit the competition is unreal. And admit it, be honest; anyone not notice that the Coke and Pepsi are almost always seperated by as much other soda as possible? Most supermarket soda aisles around here are: pepsi one end, coke the other, and all the others in between. thats no accident.

This stuff, market research, is a huge huge field.

I thought this thread at first was about frotteurism (The fetish of anonymous or discrete rubbing up against unsuspecting women in public places).

When my wife was alive, she would drag me shopping with her every weekend I was off (Not many in those days). God, how I hated it at the time. Now, I would move into the Paramus mall and stay there forever if I could have those days back with her!!!!

Shopping with a girl is the worst. Every store is crowded and the lines are long and they have to try everything on and it takes forever. My girlfriend loves shopping and I go with her just about every weekend. I dont mind it so much when I can find a bench and just listen to my ipod or find a Sears or something...

The worst are middle-aged Japanese women.
They will shove past you like Lavar Arrington blitzing the quarterback.

Yes, Johns Farms.

I wouldnt want to be in there if there was ever a fire. The place has no swift way to exit.
