It's grammtically correct to refer to ALL bands with a "the" in that manner. It's impossible to do it any other way. The "the" is NOT capitalized in their case, since it's not part of the their name. You either have to say "the Yeah Yeah Yeahs" or "the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs."

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs? There is no 'The' in their name.

So are you supposed to say "Here are Yeah Yeah Yeahs?" That sounds stupid. If your band name ends in an "s" you will have a "the" or "The" in the front of your name:

Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Van Halen
The Rolling Stones
Tenacious D
The Foo Fighters

How about The Rock? That sounds stupid: "Hello, The Rock, how are you today? Would you like some key lime pie?"

Oh and MTV.com has the winners listed already, not that it's a real award show that matters, but finally Uma wins something for Kill Bill (actually two that I saw)! And if I ruined the show for you I feel so sorry for you.

I've never heard anyone refer to Paul's second band at all. If you were in the Beatles why would you try to start another band?

I can't speak for the other pairings Amy, but Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx are in a movie together that is coming out in a week or so called "Collateral".

And I have no fucking idea what that goblin thing is. I thought it was Jack Osbourne at first.

That's because there's no such thing as just "Wings." The band was always called "Paul McCartney & Wings," which is grammatically different from the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs." If it was just "Wings," the would be referred to as "the band Wings," like I said initially. You need "the" there somewhere, either directly before the band name or in "the band *band name*." There's no way around it.

Not sure about that Mojo. If the band was indeed just called "Wings", then wouldn't they be introduced as follows:

"Ladies, and Gentlemen, performing here for your listening pleasure. . . Wings."

The announcer wouldn't say, "And now here they are, the Wings".

You don't call it the Jefferson Airplane, the Creedance Clearwater Revival, the INXS, or the Aerosmith.

I suppose you could make a case for saying that the word "band" is left out but understood (the band Aerosmith), but that's sloppy language and construction.

TheMojoPin

I think it has something to do with the plurality and tutle structure of "Yeah Yeah Yeahs"...which contrasts with that it would be wrong to say "the Wings"...but something about "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" without the "the" is just as wrong as "the Wings."

Exactly. No one says the Tool, or the Franz Ferdinand or the Outkast. No one says the De La Soul or the Radiohead. It's just Radiohead. No 'the band' is necessary to modify those names. Why do we need to tack words on to a band's name just because it's plural. We're just used to hearing it and do it instinctively whether or not it's appropriate.

Never mind me, though. I'm just anal about things like that. Like it drives me nuts when people insist on spelling El Jefe with two f's.

The testament to my skill is you're still listening ...

TheMojoPin

Yeah, but you just named bands that all have "singular" names. The key here has to be the plural structure of certain band names...no "the Pearl Jam" or "the Alice in Chains"...but you DO have "the Smashing Pumpkins." "The Yeah Yeah Yeahs" is grammatically correct because of the strcture of the band name, but that doesn't make "the" part of the band name itself. Hence why in a sentence it would be, "I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs," and not," I saw The Yeah Yeah Yeahs."

Thought that still doesn't explain why "the Wings" sounds so wrong. Maybe it's because they were such a shitty band.

Well, they're an example of a band that has "The" as an actual part of their band name, like "The Hives" or "The Strokes" or whatever, so they're off in a seperate category. Technically they're using "the" and "who" incorrectly, but hey, it sounds good.

I'll bet "the Wings" is technically correct...it just sounds ridiculous and wrong.

I think I have it Mojo.

You are right in that you can use the word "the" in front of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs because they are pluralized name (like the Netherlands, the Johnsons et al).

I stand corrected on that.

The reason "the Wings" doesn't sound quite right, could be because we think of them as a pair which is actually singular in useage, because we are thinking of them as a collective unit. Whereas, while the Yeah Yeah Yeah's may be a single group, the three words in the name make us think of them as single units that have been pluralized.

Additionally, it doesn't really fall into any of the other traditionally accepted catagories requiring an article before the proper noun:
Geographical place
Public institutions/facilities/groups
Newspapers
or a noun followed by a prepositional phrase

I think I'm blathering so I'll shut up now.

TheMojoPin

Brilliant deduction, my good sir! I couldn't wrap my head around it, but now it makes sense...the singular pair!

Don't forget Kate Beckinsale.

Yet again, she's rediculously HOT.

So what does everyone think of the Beastie Boy's performance? I loved Paul's Boutique, Ill Communication and Check Your Head. Even Hello Nasty was ok. But I've heard a few songs from this album and I'm not impressed. Are the Beastie's done?

Thanks to monsterone for the sig!

Nah. The album is a "typical" Beastie Boy album...if there is such a thing. There are 2-3 doggish songs they could have trimmed, but the rest is pretty fucking solid, and the last 5-6 songs on the album are some of the best tracks they've ever put put out...and if the single "Triple Threat" isn't a huge hit this summer, there is no hope left for the world.

Basically, if they put this album out 3-4 years ago, it would be much better. It's the fact they made us six years that I think really drags it down...because after 6 years, I fuckin' want another "Check Your Head," and that just isn't going to happen.

The Beastie Boys and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were good and Lindsey Lohan was hot and everything else sucked.

Honestly, you're 100% insane. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs were garbage. The visual display was nice and all, but Karen sounded fucking terrible. Every time I've seen them she's sounded amazing. I know she can perform live, unfortunately she didn't tonight. To describe their performance as good is giving them way more credit than they deserve.
As for the Beasties, let me start by saying they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Despite my love for their past efforts, I can still comment objectively. They came off so weak it wasn't even funny. They're in their 30's, but they performed like they were old men. Not only is the energy not there, the musical integrity is all but lost. This new record is beyond a disappointment. DJ Hurricane has got to be ashamed of them.
The only good part of the show was when I walked out of the room.

I got a letter from the army so I think that I'll enlist. I'm not brave or proud of nothing I just want to kill something.

would the beasties even be popular if they were not white? if 3 black doods put out crap like that they would be shunned by the music industry. if you really think about it how many of their hits were actually good songs? the only songs that the radio stations down here ( washington dc ) play are that new p.o.s. check-a-check-check-check-a-check it out ( which by the way might have the worst beat of all time ) and "girls" which sounds like a 12 year-old got ahold of an old yamaha beat box. paul's boutique was decent but then it seems like they decided "ok, now lets try sucking for 15 years"

I TiVoed it and sped through the first half last night. They are ripping themselves off now with the sketches. The bit where Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn are trying to pitch a sequal to LOTR to Peter Jackson was much, much funnier several years ago when they had Stiller and Vaughn trying to pitch a Titanic sequal to James Cameron.

Pretty much all of them.

Their 2nd through 4th albums are almost perfect.
