There's going to be a week-long mourning period. For a couple of those days, he willl lie in state in the Capitol before his body is buried at the Reagan Library in CA.

I'd disagree, but it looks like he'll be able to finish the D-Day stuff and come back for the funeral. And it looks like all the foreign leaders there will be following him. The only thing that seems in jeopardy is the G8 summit scheduled for next week, and if Bush ditched the funeral for that, even I'd be pissed.

While I supported much of what he stood for back in the day - I voted for him in the first election I could vote in - over the years I began to regret that decision in light of Iran/Contra, the stipping of all the environmental laws, ignoring the AIDS crisis, making the word "liberal" a dirty word, visiting the Nazi cemetary, putting this country in horrible debt in order to bankrupt the Soviet Union and sowing the seeds of the neo-con movement.
At the time it was pretty obvious that he was a better choice than Mondale (or Carter in 1980), and he did have a way to comfort you, even as part of you was convinced we were hell bent on hurtling towards WWIII - living here in Washington in the 1980s, it was never a question of IF there was going to "the day after," but when.
At the end of his second term, there had been scuttle to make it legal for a President to serve a third term again, and to be honest I might have voted for him again, had they gone through with it - which scares me now, since it has become clear that the disease was laying root possibly as early as 1987.
Seeing his speaches again reminds me what I liked about the man - the words and the way he delivered them in times of tragedy were very comforting. I only wish that talent could have turned towards the before mentioned AIDS crisis as it had been after the Challenger explosion - a speach that still mists me up.
History will ultimately decide how GREAT a President he really was - and I'm talking 100 years from now. No matter how many state parks, schools, air ports or Federal buildings get named after him now, history has a way to wait out the zealots with agendas and reward the true heros, or villans.
If I were to guess, I would imagine history will be kind to him, but not as reverant as his supporters today would like. He WAS a leader that was capable of great unity and great divison, and I'm not sure, but I think much of the divide we see today can be traced back to his administration.
In any event - it is very sad, but at the same time there has to be a degree of relief for his family, especially Nancy, who obviously adored him, and who carried a very, very heavy burden the last 10 years.

In recent memory? No, not to my knowledge. At least not to the general American public at large.
I just know that we have a lot of passionate followers of politics here, quite a few of whom fall to the conservative side, and we don't need any more ugliness than usual in this forum. This was a VERY divisive man and this is a VERY divisive forum. I'm trying to put those fires out BEFORE they start. Hence why I'm allowing one thread just out of respect for him...and another where people can say whatever they want. This one can be used for the latter.
Personally, I downright despise the man's politics and the era he represented...but that's me. His death has no bearing on that whatsoever, so there's no need for me to take some shots in a thread remembering a man that for some is a hero and damn near-mythological BEFORE he died.
So basically, yes, I'm "bending" my own rules by allowing a duplicate thread about Reagan's death...but my reasoning in doing so is to avoid board conflict on a larger scale. So "lesser of two evils," I guess.

Well when someone good dies I will. Tony Randall, Spalding Gray, Paul Winfield and Captain Kangaroo aren't really what I was thinking. Actually I can't think of someone at this level who has died in the past few years.
Again, I am not saying this shouldn't be done for Ronald Reagan.
I wonder if it was like this for the Brits when Lady Di died.

RIP Mr. President.
One of my favorite quotes ever:
I wanted to become President so I could sit down with Brezhnev. And I was going to let him pick out the size of the table, and I was going to listen to him tell me, the American President, what we were going to have to give up. And I was going to listen to him for maybe twenty minutes, and then I was going to get up from my side of the table, walk around to the other side, and lean over and whisper in his ear, 'Nyet.' It's been a long time since they've heard 'Nyet' from an American president."

The best Reagan line of all-time was from his testimony to the Tower Commission; he was asked why his more recent testimony seemed to contradict earlier statements he made. Reagan consults his notes, grins, and replies:
"If the question comes up at the Tower Board meeting, you might want to say that you were surprised."
Hopefully someone can get Hunter S. Thompson to write an obituary like the one he did for Richard Nixon. That would make my day.

What's this "he kicked Gorbachev's ass" stuff? Gorby did more to bring down the USSR than anyone. Reagan and co. definitely worked with what they saw happening to help push it along, but the Soviet slide was inevitable at that point.
Giving Reagan credit for "crushing the USSR" is like solely blaming Bush for 9/11 just because they were in office at the time.

For good or ill (and I think there's at least a little of both), Ronald Reagan was the most consequential American politician in the past third of a century or so. Like Mojo, I disagreed with most of his policies but I have to give him major (personal) props on at least two issues: He knew when to take Yes for an answer from the Commies, much to the chagrin from some of his supporters on the Right, and ultimately made parts of the world safer and freer places (at least Eastern Europe) and he blew up a lot of liberal cant and forced people like me to come up with a better thought out world view if we were going to continue to claim the gov't. should play some role in bettering people's lives. (the Democratic party as a whole hasn't gotten this fully worked though yet, but I have hope).
On the personal front, I had great sympathy for his condition because I saw up close how horrible Alzheimer's is. I hope he's at peace now and I hope his family finds it as well.
Godspeed, Mr. President.

As a common lurker, but rare poster of this community (who needs to post when ypu can ask the most innocent question and end up feeling like the biggest ass on the board because God forbid I don't know all about internet politics and asked if anyone knew the artist R&F were promoting) I can honestly say you people are the coldest human beings I have ever met. Granted some of you have made some very nice remarks about the former president, but maybe it is time some of you learn not everything is a friggin bit. Ohhh let me cry because a great man died and O&A weren't there to mock it...news flash Chicken I guarantee you O&A wouldn't have mocked the death of Reagan. Honestly I get my updates from Steels like many here, but am always running a few weeks behind because of work, and it amazes me that such a large group of people from this site even understand half of the topics that R&F speak about. Bottom line is have fun making fun of Reagan assholes, cause at least R&F will be respectful to him come Monday.

IMHO, Ronald Ray-Gun was a liar and a bum. Didn't he help create Osama Bin Laden? Didn't he allow big business to flood South America with Methyl Ethyl Keytone (a cocaine precursor) Great legacy there diaper boy! I was around during his tenure and you can't sugarcoat the shitpile he left for us. Well I guess you can, so you can also put some lipstick on a pig and fuck it then too.
GAWD! Don't you people remember the "Just Say No" campaign. Christ, that fascist rekindled the drug war but then used drug money to buy guns for the contras!!! What a fake phoney fraud!!!
And fuck Clinton too. I hope he dies by cutting off his penis in a cigar cutter.
[edit] I think this whole Altzheimers was a sham that began during his testimony when he was like "I dont recall" and kept it up to avoid prosecution for lying. I think he did enjoy shitting himself though.

Furie and I were out driving yesterday and I saw something that really disappointed me. Only one place (our local police station) had the flag at half staff. Even if we had not lost former President Regan on saturday. Yesterday was the anniversary of D-Day. Between the two events one would think that America would remember wat the two events mean to us as a country. i realize that both events take place on a weekend and some places may have closed before Regans death on Sat. But most of the places that I saw were open yesterday.

The weirdest thing for me yesterday was seeing a Jersey newspaper that actually had a full cover story of the Smarty Jones race and nothing about Reagan. I would think any president would at the very least be deservant of the top story of a newspaper.

OK. The man has been buried. So now I have a question, and I honestly mean no disrespect to the man.
Was this week a bit of overkill? I agree that just about every U.S. President deserves the state funeral, but the sugary sweet media coverage of every little thing that happened started really getting on my nerves today. Was it too much? Too positive? This wasn't the time to make a big deal of his failures, but I think some mentions of them are warrented.

Nixon. Sure, he didn't have the state funeral like Reagan, but there was massive coverage and retrospectives about him for most of the week he died. And I think that's more what HBox was talking about...how Reagan's political career was reflected upon, as opposed to the coverage of the funeral itself. The funeral coverage was nothing but, and should have only been, respectful and dignified (At least as dignified as the media can get).

If you went solely by the "mourning in America" coverage, you wouldn't know he did ANYTHING as president, good or bad. ALL of it was just about him "on the side", his humor, his wit, his way with words...and on and on and on. It seemed we buried the country's most prolific speechmaker...and that was it. They didn't even try to prop up the previously unavoidable assertions like that he "ended the Cold War." I heard more about jellybeans than ANY of that.
More than anything, I was let down by the so-called "liberal" outlets being just as sugary as media sources like Fox News, whom you'd expect to go overboard with the nicey-nice. And I'm NOT saying they guy should have been mocked or attacked, not at all...nobody deserves that in death. But I expected at least a more comprehensive retrospective of the man as the president. We heard more about him as a lifeguard than what he actually did as the leader of the free world.
Look back when Nixon died...the man disgraced the office and the country more than any president this century, yet the media still managed to show the man some respect and dignity in death, while still referring to what he had done as president. Reagan got NOTHING like that. 8 years typically reduced to two minute soundbytes. The reporting seemed to reflect the man's presidency itself...style over substance. Looks pretty on the top and makes you feel good at first...but look a little deeper and there's nothing there actually getting done.

Give me Nixon Republicans over Reagan Republicans any day.
I have much more respect for Nixon and his Presidency BECAUSE we don't white wash the bad stuff away from the good. There's no way we could, since there were trials and hearings and later books, and the man left office in disgrace.
It was a Presidency that finally allowed us to look objectively, and yes cynically, at those leading the government. Finally we could question, and doubt, and not be blind sheep. Nixon's second greatest legacy is that his scandal helped wake up the American population.
With the bobbleheads tripping over themselves to reinvent history, just mentioning Iran/Contra, or Government Cheese, or AIDS, or that MAYBE he shouldn't take sole reponsibility for the end of the Soviet Union, or that the guerrillas he supported in Afghanistan became al Qaeda, or the enormous deficit when he left, or that he helped Saddam Hussein in Iraq, or El Salvador's civil war, in which more than 75,000 people (many civilians) were killed, or "Just Say No," or the United States spending $1 billion on Nicaragua's contras (who Reagan referred to as "the moral equivalent of the Founding Fathers") even as the fighting killed as many as 50,000, or "Star Warrs," or supporteing the repressive of Guatemala's military dictatorship where more than 200,000 people, mostly indigenous peasants, died - Reagan backed Gen. Efrain Rios Montt, who came to power in a coup and has been blamed by many human rights groups for the massacre of tens of thousands of Guatemalans, including many women and children - just hinting at that makes you unpatriotic, because - if we learned anything this week - President Reagan was a GREAT man...a GREAT President...maybe one of the GREATEST Presidents...and someone who taught us how to be optomistic again.
PAH!
If we learned anything from the MATRIX films (and, by god, I hope we have!!) is that not everyone wants to wake up from their comfort and face reality. It's what Ani Difranco refers to a "Willful ignorance."

Hey, I really enjoyed the interview with Grover Norquist and learning about the Reagan Legacy Project! I immediately visited their website and submitted suggestions for other things they should try naming after the late President. My first suggestion was to rename all the weapons we illegally sell to Middle Eastern countries (like Iran) after him.
In 1983, I was sent to Lebanon to evacuate Marines after the terrorist bombing of their barracks. Wouldn't it be fitting if they renamed the morgue at Quantico after the Gipper? Just a thought...

Why so many people going batshit: deep down, when that prez from your era dies; love him or hate him, it reminds you of that That Time is Gone. Done. Not to be repeated. And we are such a nostalgic lot; and to misquote Dali; the persistence of the memory of nostalgia is very strong.
and for me; this reminded me that the 80s are, in a real way, about, hmmmm id say it feels like hmmm: 40? 50? years back? seriously.
Media coverage? Overkill defined, but when you have all these news channels i have a suggestion; dont watch tv. i have yet to see a single second of any of this, other then what is in the papers and online.
The funeral: Yes it was schmaltzy, but that what a state funeral comes off as in 2004 i guess. Last one was what; Johnson? Wow i cant believe El BJ :) went like that. Id imagine him saying, 'ah shit just plant me out back!'

It was a combination of the Republicans not understanding the Kennedy idol worship, and the stinging effects, and after effects, of the Nixon Presidency, that they made Reagan the Republican Kennedy. Anyone notice how no mention of Kennedy at all when all of the talk went to "Greatest President of the 2nd half of the 20th Century"?
Will Ford get this much attention when he dies? Just help me to understand a little bit here.
Ford will be remembered as someone who sacrificed his Presidency for helping the country heal. I liked Ford a lot. He did what needed to be done.
He was also the only President that was never actually elected...well...make that the first!

Clinton had his problems in the beginning of his term, Reagan in the end.
One difference between Reagan and Clinton is likeability. Reagan seemed like a nice man with good intentions, and the final years of his life only brought him more sympathy. Clinton, on the other hand, always seemed like a slick character, somebody you couldn't take at his word, and we all know how the final years of his term put the final nails in that coffin.
However, in terms of approval rating, they both had similar ratings. Clinton left office with slightly higher approval ratings, and had a higher average approval rating for his entire term. And a USA Today poll had Clinton rated as the third best President, above Reagan. OK, I think that's a joke, but it's what the people think.

Outside of a few smartass comments here and there, almost ALL of the discussion about Reagan here have contained criticism of his policies and actions as president...but next to NONE of it has been attacks at the man himself. A bunch of us, myself included, have gone out of our ways to point that out....even though we knew some people would STILL just gloss over it all and assume we were filled with "hate, bitterness and rage" over Reagan the man.
And this has been true even for all of the so-called "liberal" media outlets, even Air America. You're hitting back at attacks on Reagan the man that exist on maybe the smallest levels and are not the focus of ANY discussion here.
I call RAGING bullshit.

BRILLIANT point.
Camelot lasted about 20 years before it really started falling down around the Kennedy family's collective ears like the glass house it was. We're seeing almost an exact repeat of the kind of myth-making today.

This is tasteless, and way too early, but imagine if it were a year from now, and you'll feel better about yourself. (http://www.bush-zombiereagan.com/)

Much of Air America was fair. The more I think about it, the more I like Al Franken, as much as I disagree with the man. However, the usual HUA Randi Rhodes was fairly vicious.
