doesn't the FBI basically cover domestic intelligence? I thought it was a simple split: FBI=near, CIA=far

I agree. We have enough intelligence agencies. We need to consolidate not differentiate.

Furie is right but that's been the problem with DHS. Nobody wants to give up those agencies under their control to DHS because it would weaken their influence.

what needs to happen more in DHS is what happened in the Customs/INS "merger" Customs basiclly assimlated INS inspectors into CBP and INS agents into ICE. The command structure mostly came from Customs and rightly so. It's an older agency, well established and well run.

What needs to happen is for the other 20 agencies in DHS to follow suit, consolidate without infighting. Then do the same throughout DOJ and the rest of the intelligence community.

I never understood why in the US has so many agencies, when we only need a handful. it's all so segmented and departmentalized. DHS helped with that somewhat, but didn't go far enough.

I still maintain the DHS shouldn't have been formed in the first place, and will ALWAYS be more of a burden than an aid to our nation's security.

too early to tell.

but I do think the CIA and NSA should be combined.

Something that Tenet actually helped bring closer to reality. He had deep ties running through the NSA, and it and the Agency probably worked closer together under his time as Director than any other period in either agency's history.
