Saw it tonite and gotta say, great movie. Faithful to the book as much as possible.

My only complaint: they didn't name who the Marauders were and I thought that was a major plot point in the book.

I wonder if there is an equal concensus of that being said about Lord of the Rings as well. Nothing against it but I don't get all the hoopla on LOTR. Looks kind of interesting but a bit too long for my liking.

Harry Potter, I get it a little bit more and did enjoy the movies. I can deal with this a little better.

Never read any of the books but the more I read of him, I would love to see a Terry Pratchett Discworld film someday. Man are those some fucking cool books.

I didn't like it as much as I wanted to.

I didn't like the new Dumbledore. With the long hair, he kinda looks like a chick from the back. And the hat he was wearing made him look like Leonardo DaVinci.

And, why all the scenery changes. Hogwarts just didn't feel like home, anymore. Since when is everything on a goddamn mountainside???

The storyline did follow the book. I'll give them points for that. Although, I really wanted to see the portrait of the knight that take the fat lady's place. It was funny in the book.

My only complaint: they didn't name who the Marauders were and I thought that was a major plot point in the book.

This is another one of my complaints too.

This was a surprisingly awesome movie.

I thought the first couple flicks were okay, but this one was actually pretty goddamn excellent. Good acting, good direction, actually pretty dark and grim for most of the movie, and best of all, they actually focused upon the plot rather than waste precious minutes just so you see some of the little idiosyncrasies of life at Hogwarts (like the first two films did, more or less). This was ALL plot-driven, and it worked marvelously well. Easily the best of the three films, and shit, it makes me not only want to see it again but anticipate "Goblet of Fire" when it comes out next year.

And let me tell you, James, those Harry Potter kids are turning out quite nicely! Hermaine Granger, even and I say even if she is a mud-blood, is quite the little dish!!

I'd have to agree, although I don't know if I would put it quite that way.

Oh, and this: we're both going to hell just for thinking it.

Saw the movie, thought it was pretty good. Although it was the least faithful to the book it made for the better movie.

At first after leaving the theatre I thought I was dissapointed because it didn't follow the book very much, but afterwards I thought it over and realized it was the better movie. Lupin and Black's role were well acted and the darker theme was nice. While you don't get as much of Harry's classes and no quiditch, The Prisoner of Azkaban was better than the first 2.

What a disgusting world we live in that people would actually long for the spectacular hack-work of director Chris Columbus.

ECH.

If you check the IMDB, (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001060/) you'll notice some of the STUNNING and EPIC works he's unleashed on the American public. Oh, wait, they're NOT either of those things? Right, that is because he is, again, a HACK. He puts no effort into the visual styles of his films.

I've only seen the first Potter film, but man, it was shot like a goddamn documentary you'd watch in a high school science class. He just shows you point A, point B, exhibit C, exhibit D...just line 'em up and shoot 'em, Chris. Point and shoot, point and shoot...BLECH.

And yeah, Potter fans, before you lay into me(Feh), I'm just bashing Columbus as a wank of a director. I couldn't give a good goddamn about the Potter movies themselves if I tried.

The more I think about it, the more it's bothering me. I really think they should have gone a little further establishing the relationship of Lupin, Black and Pettigrew to Harry's parents, particularly James. Just a brief explanation of the Fidelius Charm and the names on the map by say Dumbledore or Lupin would have done that. Plus it would have made the emotional impact of the film that much closer to that of the book.

**SPOILERS** (Highlight to read)

As it stands, all we are told is that Black was thought to have betrayed James and Lily and killed Pettigrew. Instead Pettigrew betrayed them, faked his own death and Black got blamed. We don't find out how. Readers of the books will know what happened, but those who haven't will be left confused. It adds to the Black character particularly because it was his idea to have Pettigrew stand in as the Secret Keeper. The guilt he must feel for that drives him to be even more devoted to Harry.

It's sticking in my craw big time.

I have to disagree with ya, Mojo...while he certainly doesn't have the independent cred of Alfonso Cuaron, he is certainly no slouch in the director's chair. I mean, Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire were two HUGE box office hits. And while many people disliked BiCentennial man, I thought it was a competent and technical sound piece of science fiction. While his films may not resonate with the emotional truth of "Y Tu Mama Tambien", they resonated never the less...producing four #1 Box Office Blockbusters (if you include the aforementioned and the two Harry Potter films). The Harry Potter films could've tanked big time...you have no idea how difficult it is to take on a project of that visual complexity...it's really quite impressive if you think about it...not many directors can say the same...

No, I'm saying those films resonated with the American audience...people walked out of the theatres satisified and entertained...which is more than most films can say now a days...I personally enjoyed all four of this top grossing films...where they might not have been cinematic groundbreakers they certainly were very entertaining pieces of fiction...

No, I'm saying those films resonated with the American audience...people walked out of the theatres satisified and entertained...

Which, I'm assuming, is more a testament to the quality of the story (ie - the books) than Columbus himself. Hundreds of millions of people were buying these things, so you'd have to be a complete deficient to fuck up something already spelled out for you as a filmmaker.

I mean, I'm no fan of LOTR, but I "get" why they're good movies...very well made, the direction is incredible, and the FX are spectacular. The FX in the first "Potter" were technically good, but it just felt like they were inserted in very, "ooooh, look at THIS"-sorts of ways, and not fully integrated with what was going on around them, or the story itself.

I didn't read this book yet but this was the best movie to date. They did leave a few things unexplained, such as what BJ said in his spoiler, but I am looking foward to the next movie. With all the information in Goblet of Fire however, they might have to break the movie up into 2 parts Matrix-style.

but it just felt like they were inserted in very, "ooooh, look at THIS"-sorts of ways, and not fully integrated with what was going on around them, or the story itself

I would assume that the natural transgression of the series would still ultimately be a reflection perhaps of what Harry sees.

For example, the first movie would have more of the Hogwart's "features" and specialties as Harry's muggle-til-now background would be suprised and at times shocked to see so many "magical" things.

The second movie showed less of what had become 2nd "sorting" hat to Harry in the sense that he'd already adjusted mentally to shifting staircases and talking pictures. (The only reason to show the paintings much at all in the 2nd film was to reinforce the self love that their new Defense against the Dark Arts professor had).

With this third film we see Harry starting to struggle with his growing powers and more importantly with his growing fears and puberty related problems.

This is a reflection of the book series as well. I've noticed that as each book comes along, we see more turmoil both in physical violence and in Harry's thoughts and emotions.

Why shouldn't the films progress in much the same way?

As for the plot items left out in the 3rd, it certainly isn't the first time that a key element has been left out. I've always felt that not enough notice was made in the first one of Snape's efforts to break the spell on Harry's broomstick during the quiditch match. There hasn't been enough work in developing the Snape good or bad storyline that has been threading its way through the series.

The only explanation I can think of for the most recent omission is that perhaps they made a conscious decision to save that part of the story for the next film as a carryover introduction to the Goblet of Fire.

But he DIDN'T do that...it was like he was sticking them in there after the fact just because he could...not like he was actually trying to weave it all into the story. In his head it was all just psot-production, and to me, that's how it looked. One layer of action happening, with something else layed on top, and the two had NOTHING to do with each other. It was all about as subtle and natural as that paint can he kept slamming Joe Pesci with in "Home Alone."

An awful movie!! Where do I begin?

Well for starters whoever that was playing Dumbledore stunk on ice! His performance was too cheeky and there was no grace to him at all. Completely off. The divination teacher was terrible as well. Way too over the top. I understand that the character is supposed to be like that but this chick couldn't sell it.

The regulars were off too (Mcgonagall, Malfoy and Hagrid). The guy who played Lupin however was spot on. Great performance! Out of the three main kids Hermione gave the best performance followed by Ron and then Harry. In the first one their acting was just fine. It kind of dropped off in the second and I guess in this one they felt a little bit more comfortable with themselves.

I am very tired of these hard cuts they seem to like in the Potter movies. It happened in the first one, then in the second and a couple of times in the third. Where's the transitional device?

There was absolutely no heart to this film at all. No meat, no magic (not wizard magic). Where was the tension? Throughout the book there was tension because of Sirius Black. None of it came through at all on the screen.

Maybe it's because I've read the books up to Goblet, but I was completely bored. I felt like I was obligated to see it because I had read the books.

I think it's time they stopped trying to remain so faithful to the books and start worrying about making a good, entertaining film

Deeply disappointed with this one.

Ron: Are they lifeguards or lifepussies?!?!

And here is the opinion of someone who felt the same way i did

OK, now time to argue my opinion that this is one of the worst movies to have come out this summer.

As I watched the movie, the first thing that struck me as strange was the pacing. It was horrendous. From Harry blowing up that woman into a balloon to his bus ride to a whole bunch of yelling and frantic action, all of this 'intro' stuff happend in, what, a span of five minutes? From Harry getting UBER-pissed off when that woman makes fun of his parents (poor actor direction, and quite out of character - he's NEVER been that pissed before) to that stupid bus with the shrunken head, I was convinced this movie was made for people with ADD. I sort of found myself wishing I had it, as then, perhaps the pacing wouldn't have grated on my nerves so much.

The overall flow of the movie seemed to get a bit better once Harry made it to Hogwarts, and hung out there for a bit, but even then, I found myself distracted by the 'super cool' camera moves. I wish I had a camera that could go through glass.
The camera work was pretty neat to look at, but a LOT of it was there just for the 'look what I can do!' factor. We did NOT need to go through glass, mirrors, clocks, and have oddly framed shots ALL the time. If it serves the story and helps convey emotion (for a GOOD example of wacky camera shit done right, see Panic Room) then by all means, but don't beat us over the head with how cool you are. So you're a Mexican director and apparantly that is all the craze in Hollywood these days, but look at how to do this stuff RIGHT from people like del Toro and Rodriguez.

Now, if these were my only two complaints, I wouldn't have been so let down. But no, oh no, there is the 'story'. Or rather, the complete and utter LACK of a story. What the hell was this piece of crap about?! I have never read the books, and after having seen this, I don't think I ever will. This story was horrendous.
From when we had the scene with the one guy morphing out of rat form, to another guy turning into a werewolf, to ANOTHER guy turning into a normal wolf, to professor Snape coming out of nowhere, I was confused out of my mind. What the hell were they talking about? Yes, I was listening, but it was STUPID and made no sense.
And then, surprise, surprise, we pull a Rick Berman and...ready for it...go BACK IN TIME! YES! Originality! Go JK Rowling! Wow us with your witty and original writing prowess.
Please, that whole time travel thing was just lame and had it been done in an interesting way it might have helped redeem an already suffering movie, but as it stands it was the final stake in the heart.

Oh, no, wait. It wasn't. What was, happened when for no apparant reason the movie decided it wanted to be Princess Mononoke. Tell me, as a movie-watcher why the hell wasn't that deer of light by the water explained to us? Later, after the movie ended my friends (who had read the books) explained it to me, but at the time it was just stupid and poorly done.

Oh yes (now that I'm in this rant it's all coming back) what was the deal with Hermione's punch? That was so lame. Through all the interviews and all the 'press' and hype about this punch, it was supposed to be this big 'girl power' deal, where Hermione shows what she's made of. And what does it turn out to be? Stupid! Throughout the WHOLE freaking series stupid Spike (er...Malfoy) has been harrassing the shit out of these characters and just being a little prick throughout. Now, I hear he's gonna get punched, and I figure it is going to be in response to the worst thing he's ever done. I figure he's gonna be even meaner than calling Hermione a 'mud-blood'; I figure this kid is REALLY gonna do something to piss everyone off and make the crowd cheer when he finally get's whats coming to him. Er...the crowd (parts of it) DID cheer, but I don't see why. So, what does Spike do to finally earn a shot to the face? He spies. On the Hippogryph. Oh, and...uh...that's it.
WHAT?!! All of this girl power hype and all of this Her

I've never read the books and saw other movies on cable. The first one was good and I wasn't crazy about the second one.

I saw the third one this weekend and thought it was awesome. I would see it again. I loved the darker tone to the movie.

And people, please, enough with the "they left this out" and "they left that out". What movie hasn't when adapted from a book? It is to be expected.
Who is to say it would make a movie better, or even worse? It could go either way (just ask George Lucas).

I wish Alfonso CuarĒn stayed on for the fourth movie, but wisely made the decision to stay with the movie though post-production to make sure it came out his way and not the studio's.

Goblet of Fire will be directed by Mike Newell, who I am not so sure is a good choice. He's British, but his resume is mostly TV shows and one good movie - Donnie Brasco.

You're a couple of weeks behind, Justice. Malkovich as Voldemort, besides being horrible casting, was just a rumor that Warners flatly denied the day after it came out, thank God.

As far as GOF being 2 movies, originally Warners were kicking the idea around because the book is so big, but on the advice of Alfonso Cuaron, director of POA, they've decided to make it 1. From what I understand, the beginning of the book, Harry at the Dursley's and the Quidditch World Cup will be omitted. I'm not sure how they're gonna get in the Dark Mark sighting, but there ya go.

I thought they were trying to keep the cast English. They are just missing a few big english actors from Lord of the Rings (Two Ians and a dwarf)

Well IF they do edit it out...and it would be a fucking SHAME that they do, knowing how they work they would just show it via the news article from the Wizard newspaper. Or something simple like that.

I LOVED this movie, I know I'm late but oh well.

I was a nerd and waited in line and saw it opening night, well worth it but I agree with other people on the leaving out important stuff. But it IS a movie, detail is why we read the books.

I'm just REALLY hoping they learned something from Lord of the Rings and start offering Extended Versions of the movies on DVD since this movie was long and the rest of the books are just as long. I'll be the happiest muggle ever if they do that.

Alright, it seems that the Quidditch World Cup is going to be back in the film. Some English bed guy has been commisioned to make four 4 poster beds for a scene in the film. It is assumed that this is for the Weasleys' tent. I'm glad it's back; the whole thing with the Dark Mark and all is kind of pivotal. I just finished re-re-re-re-reading the book, and I'm so looking forward to this film.

Remember when the rumor was Mr. Bean was going to play Voldemort? One website (the-numbers.com) still list him in the cast, but without saying what role he's playing.

I think Ralph Fiennes is the last person rumored for Voldemort. One of my wife's her students showed her an article about it, but it was a while ago. You can see at the link below if you're interested.

I've decided I'm going to take it upon myself to update this thread periodically with HP news. So here's this weeks info:

Rumors have been swirling for a while, and are getting stronger and stronger that Ralph Fiennes (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000146/) is going to be playing Voldemort. While he certainly has the chops to do it, and I wouldn't be overly upset to see it, I don't know if I see him physically as the character. But makeup can do wonders I suppose.

It would also appear that the extended version DVDs are going be released at the same time as the PoA DVD release, as part of a '6 pack' (2 discs for each of the 3 films) box set. Details are:

The PoA DVD itself is indeed two discs. On a clarifying note: the "three-pack" the details discuss is a package of six DVDs, which contains two discs for each HP film to date.

The features are:

-Exclusive Never-Before-Seen Footage
-Creating the Vision: A Revealing Interview with J.K. Rowling and the Filmmakers
-3 Great Challenges! Test Your Memory with "Magic You May Have Missed."
-Help Crookshanks "Catch Scabbers" and Go on and Unexpected Quest with Sir Cadogan
-Enjoy Self-Guided Tours of Honeydukes and Professor Lupin's Classroom
-Johnny Vaughan and the Shrunken Head Lead Raucous Interviews with the Cast
-Meet the Animal Trainers in Care of Magical Creatures
-And more

from The Leaky Cauldron (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/).

So that's it for now. Stay tuned.

It's also been rumored that in the upcoming book 6, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry will struggle with whether or not to date someone who has kids.

Love the updates BJ and I'm SO excited for the extended versions. That made my day.

Harry dating someone with kids? WHere the hell did that come from? Oh well.

I'm re-reading Goblet of Fire right now. And I'm really enjoying it but I'm also running into questions as I'm reading. You know, the kind that may not be able to be explained but you should let them slide since everything can't be covered.

Anyway, one of them was why couldn't Sirius just use a Patronus spell himself against Dementors now that he's on the run? Harry was all freaking out about him getting caught but if Harry can stop them, at least long enough to get away, it seems like that should be enough. But maybe I'm just being stupid.

I'll look forward to more updates. BTW, my boyfriend has the hookup on bootleg DVDs but his friend also gets us the real version of movies before they come out. He's downloading POA for me now. I'm stoked.

Filming has been spotted in a place called Beacon Hill, in England. Witnesses say they see Mr Weasley, Harry, Ron, Hermione and Cedric and Amos Diggory climbing the hill, atop of which is a boot. This is obviously the portkey scene from the beginning of the book. The portkey takes them to the Quidditch World Cup, so I guess it looks like it's in after all. This is good news.

Lord Voldemort has been cast. As was rumored, Ralph Fiennes has been selected for the role. WB released a press, uhhhhhhhh, release earlier today. (Yesterday, I guess now.)

BURBANK, CA, August 4, 2004 - Ralph Fiennes (Red Dragon, Maid in Manhattan, Schindler's List) and Miranda Richardson (The Hours, Sleepy Hollow, The Crying Game) have joined the all-star cast of Warner Bros. Pictures' Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's popular Harry Potter novel series. Fiennes will play Harry Potter's nemesis, the evil Lord Voldemort, and Richardson takes on the role of muckraking journalist Rita Skeeter.

So that's that. All the pieces are in position, I just hope Mike Newell can do it right.

I think Ralph will be a good Voldemort. Like I said above, he is a great actor, and makeup can easily be used to give him that right Lord Voldemort look. And I was thinking about it; when Voldemort does return, he basically gets a new body. Yeah he's still all skinny and whatnot, but with Harry's blood, and Wormtail's hand and all he is gonna look pretty fresh. So they may not need to age him all that much afterall. Just give him those red, snake eyes and he'll be fucking golden. I cannot wait to see it!

Edit: Oh yeah, this news is courtesy of pretty much every Harry Potter site out there. To see 'em all , the good ones anyway, go here: Keep track of everything Potter. (http://www.theurbanwire.com/UW/hpsitereview.html)

Edit: This is a post from a thread while ago. The thread was about some pics of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. For those interested, it'll give a little insight into the exchange Jon and I just had:

This is a perfect opportunity to give a little lesson. So, those of you out there who are looking to learn 'Geek', pay attention. It's not so much it's own language. It uses the same words as English, but it's the subtleties and nuanced meanings of the words that change. The purpose of normal human language is to exchange information, in one way or another, with someone else. 'Geek' is all about one-upsmanship. It's there, you just gotta read between the lines:

JustJon said, "Nah, I saved that for the pics of Natalie Portman and the chick who looks like Angelina Jolie that were on the same page when I saw it last night."

Now to the average human being that is merely Jon making a statement giving us a little of his opinion and the idea the there were some pics of hot chicks with the pic of Anakin.

To me, and every other geek, it goes much deeper. The fact that the other pics were of chicks isn't all that important. It helps that they are chicks, but the pics could be of anything, vehicles, costumes, set ideas, not all that important. What is important is that there were other pics to see. By metntioning the other pics, Jon lets us know that he's seen more than we have, he's a little more 'inside' than we are, and he knows a little more about the film than we do.

The second half of his statement is even more telling. "on the same page when I saw it last night". This let's us all know that not only does Jon know more than us, it's also old news to him. He knew all this yesterday. It's soooooo not even a scoop any more. "Yaaaawn, most boring post ever!"

If I were to uphold my end of the 'Geek' conversation, my first order of business would be to save face. I'd have to let everyone know that I'd also seen the pictures yesterday, but for some reason (insert lame excuse) I didn't make the post until today. I would also have to redeem myself by perhaps making reference to some long forgotten indie type film of Natalie Portman's and say that she looked hotter in that. Not because she does or doesn't look hotter in it, just so that it's known that I know something that not everyone else does.
