Man, it's fucking good...but I wouldn't got as far as best album of the year. Shit, I wouldn't even say it's the best hip-hop album of the year.
Top 3 or 5, yeah. But not quite the toppermost of the poppermost. I'd put the Lyrics Born, Lifesavas, Dangermouse & Jemini, Madvillain, Vast Aire, Immortal Technique and Diverse album up there with it, or higher...though I'm pretty sure some of those came out in 2003, so I'm probably all wrong.
And here's a Li'l Jon soundboard. (http://www.collegeslackers.com/?pg=lil_jon)

the beats are so tight and completely fit the rhymes. shit, self produced
plus it transcendes genres.
i won't disagree with your list, but as a freshman album, it kills

the hottest shit roca has put out to date.
i pretty much lost my ear for hip hop (except for the beasties) at least five years ago ...
but the 'hottest shit roca has put out to date' is dj dangermouse's "the grey album: jay-z's accapella mix of "the black album" with sampled beats of "the white album" ...
technically, not an officially sanctioned release and has been denounced by EMI -- but nonetheless, it's goddamn friggin amazing ...

Diverse definitely dropped in 2003. Which leaves me no excuse for not yet having it, although I've wanted it since it's been out.

My only question is this, M1, did you just get the album? Because I could have agreed with you on this subject months ago.
Big news--according to a source close to Aftermath, Jay-Z is gonna release an album under the moniker S. Carter.
Fuck. I can't find a link, but it'll be all over the place soon enough.

Damn Mojo, I didn't think anyone knew about Lyrics Born. He's definitely incredible. I suppose you've heard of Blackalicious, and the whole quannum crew. But have you heard of: Deltron 3030, Heiroglyphics, or Guru. All equally spectacular, and if you like quannum you should definitely like them.

Man, I love Quannum, and it pisses me off that their output is so goddamn SLOW. Hell, I was listening to them back when they were the Solesides crew instead! And it took FOREVER for them to finally put the Latyrx album back into print...talk about a classic!
And I love all the other acts/groups you brought up. Like Chris Rock said, "I love hip-hop more than my mother," and I just don't even hear the stuff that gets most of the play on MTV and BET. It's like it doesn't even exist. Sure, I gotta dig for what I want a little more, but it's worth the effort when you find the good stuff...Bomb Hip-Hop, Def Jux, Quanumm, Ninja Tune, Big Dada, Chocolate Industries, Stones Throw, Rhymesayers...all great labels putting out great album after great album.
M1's definitely right about West's album being phenomenal for a freshman release...AND that the guy is mostly known as a producer, AND that he straddles the "backpacker" and "bling" line so fucking well...it is an incredible album. I think the only thing holding me back is that I really didn't like (And still don't) "Through The Wire"...
I think I'm the only person who thinks "The Grey Album" is overrated...cool gimmick, but it didn't really grab me. Not especially when the original verson of "99 Problems" blows away ANY version of all those songs...and most other hip-hop tracks put out in the last year.
My MC for the moment is still MF Doom. The dude put out the Madvillain and Viktor Vaughn albums this year, and has another one in line before Xmas...MF CAN'T BE STOPPED!

And here I was thinking you just listened to rock. I haven't even heard of a few of those groups you mentioned, ill definitely check them out. You're also right about "99 Problems", I can't get enough of that fucking song...soo goood.
Some other good rap groups for you (or others paying attention):
7L and Esoteric
Jedi Mind Tricks (Little harder than the others but still good)
The Streets (White British Rapping, need i say more?)
Souls of Micheif
DJ Format is the fucking greatest. If you don't have DJ Format - Vicious Battle Raps featuring Abdominal, your rapping collection is not complete. If you can't find it i'd be happy to give it to you. It's awesome.
EDIT: How could i forget:

Fuckin' brilliant. Though they're feudin' with another MC I can't get enough of right now, Vast Aire...but I'm not sure why.
Jedi Mind Tricks (Little harder than the others but still good)
Like a weird, sci-fi version of dead prez. I have to be in a real certain frame of mind to listen to 'em.
The Streets (White British Rapping, need i say more?)
Fuckin' LOVE Mike Skinner & UK hip-hop. Roots Manuva, Ty, Dizzee Rascal...and groups and acts like Tricky, Massive Attack (All part of the old Wild Bunch collective), Nightmares on Wax, DJ Cam and Smith & Mighty have been doing the "euro hip-hop" thing for like a good decade now. Two of those labels I mentioned, Big Dada and Ninja Tune, are based mostly from this sound, and are worth checking out. Track down the comp "Extra Yard" if you can.
Souls of Micheif
Another classic (But are they still around?). Started listening to them and Pharcyde and Tha Alkoholiks and the Hieroglyphics crew at about the same time waaaaaay back...if you like them, check out a newer act called Zion I.
DJ Format is the fucking greatest. If you don't have DJ Format - Vicious Battle Raps featuring Abdominal, your rapping collection is not complete. If you can't find it i'd be happy to give it to you. It's awesome.

Pharoahe Monch
More classics. Though Monch seems to have been caught up like Mos Def in the collapse of Rawkus, and hasn't been heard from in a few years...

i only know the "grey album," and by the time i heard the originals i was already ingraciated ... the sheer familiarity of the beats left quite the impression ... probably, what made "paul's boutique" stick so well -- not only was it a head of the curve in a production sense, but the samples used (mountain/beatles) were such classic rock radio staples ...
if i had more interest in exploring the depths of current hip hop, i might not put all my eggs in the "grey album" record ...
+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+|+
I too thought the Grey Album was a bit overrated. It was
cool for a few tracks, but after that some of the remixes
seem forced. Great concept though.
I thought College Dropout was a very good album, but it is
apparent on nearly every track that features a guest that
Kanye is better off sticking to producing. Common and
Kweli outshine him on Get Em High, but I'm glad to see
someone with a positive message getting some shine.
Looking forward to summer releases, The Roots-"The
Tipping Point" and Common's "Be"

And Jadakiss I'll never get. I look at him and it's like, "that's just that fucker from the fuckin' Lox," bit people talk like he's the next Rakim...of course, he's been that for like 7 years now, so the dude's either gotta finally step up or shut up.

With the whole pastor thing he was doing his songs are probably gonna be a lot cleaner and about things other then having no ho's at shows to menage in suites and being the cat that be hard to meet, getting head from girls that used to hardly speak. But being clean can be good, cause Mase's shit has always had great beats and thats what gets me hooked to hip hop.

That, and he had some kickass production from Dre on his debut (That production on "In The Club" would have made it a amssive banger for ANYONE)...plus, since he was endorsed by Eminem, you had every little wannabe wanting to pick up the album even before they heard 50, just because Em said so.

too bad onyx sampled it first on their newest album on the song Slam harder, and did it much better.
50 Cent is an average rapper b/c most of his buzz come from people who like his personality and his life story more than his rap skills
true about most people liking him because of Eminem.
but 50 DID ghostwrite for P.Diddy, and Biggie, along with the Madd Rapper. so his rap skills are not at all average, 50 recorded with Crazy Cat records ( The madd rappers Label) a few years before he got signed to Warner bros. and consequently got shot, and dropped. and his voice was clear and concise, unlike the mumbles he has now, but i guess getting shot in the face will do that to a man. just look in your favorite downloading spot for "power of the dollar" to here 50 not sound like mase.
and i say that 50 cent will battle anybody and win. except maybe eminem and canibus. the absolute best battle rappers alive today.

Methinks once you put on Puff's shiny suit, it don't come off too easily...
it came off when the lox talked about murdering him and raping jlo.
wow a good hip hop thread where do i begin? kanye is a good rapper, his beats piss me off more than get me excited, but i think he's good producer. 'h to the izzo' pissed me off to no end. and i can never forgive him for that damn beat. and while i think the black album on the whole is good, i tend to skip over 'lucifer' and '99 problems'.
as for 50 cent, he's a good rapper. he was the absolute shit in 99 but when he was signed by shady last year he wasnt nearly as good. 'how to rob' is a classic. i mean he attacked everyone and did it well. 'nobody likes me' is another classic. it was an excellent diss track to ja, and the video is dirty and grimey and what hip hop videos are supposed to be. (if you have never seen that video then ur missing out.)
and as for hip hop albums that ahve coem out this year. kanye's is not the best. very good, but not the best. i beg someone, anyone go out and by or download royce da 9' 5" album. its the best rap album ive heard in too fucking long. there is no eminem on it, there are no big extravagant beats, its just him and mic. and its excellent. he is the best rapper that no one cares about, by far.
it takes balls to say
" i hate hip hop , hip hop sucks
you got niggas on top swingin from tupacs nuts"
and he takes shots at eminem throughout the first half of the album.

Canibus is fucking excellent.
I listen to rap mainly for the flow of it. To me 50 cent has absoluetly no flow. I cannot stand the new type of "gangsta" rap, why does every other word have to be "bitch" "nigga" or "ho". Listen to Deltron 3030, he's a fucking dictionary when it comes to rapping.

Royce is pretty cool. Seems like he's been around forever.
I can't skip "99 Problems," just for the production alone. To me, THAT is what hip-hop is supposed to sound like, at least musically. Layers, mofo's...FUCKIN' LAYERS. I downright fuckin' LOATHE most production and sampling these days...all lazy samples, nobody cuts anything up and really mixes it, cheesy synths, whack choruses song by anonymous hoochie #12...and I swear, if Kayne does that "sped up soul diva sample" shit one more time, I'M gonna crash my car into his.
"99 Problems" sounds straight up fucking BOMB SQUAD. It's like the greatest song P.E. never made. I wanna hear "3 Feet High & Rising," I want "Paul's Boutique"...gimme some good MUSIC, man! It's ridiculous I gotta buy albums BY DJ's to get that now.

99 Problems is definitely what rap should be. It just sounds so fucking raw and flows like a fucking river.

Holy Christ, yes. COS played me those tracks off of the DJ Format album, and they were SICK...even sicker since Abdominal and DJ Format are fuckin' CANADIAN.
The album is pretty cool, too...it's got a real Digable Planets-type "jazz" feel to it. Good stuff.

Holy shit! I THOUGHT that director's name looked familiar! I met him a few years back when he was shooting the video for The Dismemberment Plan's "Time Bomb" at the Black Cat down in DC...cool!

just for the production alone
yeha i admit i like rap more for lyricism than production. dont get me wrong i love a good beat as much as the next guy but anyone can pay a producer for a beat, but lyricism is a skill. thats why i like big l, rakim and krs. their beats werent that great, but the flow and their lyrics are amazing.
and speaking of lyrcists anyone else like madd skillz? seriously a helluva lyricist. download the 'rap up 2002 and the rap up 2003' its an idea that shuldve been done before.

"Mad Skillz" is just "Skillz" now.
Dude, and how can you say Rakim and KRS-One didn't have good production?!?! Rakim had Eric B and KRS had fuckin' BDP (Scott La Rock)...some of the most classic and respected production EVER!
And the music should be MUSIC...not something that someone just drops a dime for. I want HIP-HOP...not RAP.

Man, all of this sounds really cool and I may delve into hip-hop again. Things just got so stale for me. It just shows I guess how really out of touch with music I truly am.

What happened to having the "Skillz to pay the billz"?

Skillz is a really good lyricist, who was lost when Rawkus
went under, he still hasn't found a record deal, damn
shame with all this crap out there. He's done a ton of
ghostwriting, probably one of the top ghost-writers in the
game.
He's been doing well hanging around on the Okayplayer
tour so hopefully it helps him get a deal.

Skillz is on the new Okayplayer comp, "True Notes, vol. 1." It's a great, great album.

Tomorrow at Webster Hall in NYC I got invited down to watch The Roots make their new concert DVD and they will be performing with Skillz, Talib Kweli and others from the True Notes Compilation.
After the show there is a meet and greet w/ the artists, I can't wait to tell Skillz he has a loyal following on RonFez.net and see the "WTF??" look on his face :)
peace
