View Full Version : Who's buying Super?

Since gas is so expensive lately, is anyone really buying Super unleaded, and if not, what happens to it if sits there too long at the gas station? Does it "go bad" if they move it and they transfer it to the Unleaded tank and pass it off as unleaded?

i have always bought super since i started driving 24 years ago... i even buy it for my lawn and yard equip sometimes, sometimes special...
I got this thing stuck in my mind that 'you get what you pay for' and feel that it's better for the overall running of my car...
It seems you have to start out with regular and stay regular. But going from Super to regular can fuck with your car. I try to justify by saying "i don't smoke or hang out in bars" so i'll spend a little extra on good gas. Man i got to get a life!

Super all the way. Last time I bought regular was when my car broke down in Alabama. Believe you me, that ain't going to happen again.

Out here, most gas stations have regular and super at the same price... $2.13 a gallon.

You know, i think there are some of the 'less known" gas stations that sell 'special' grade gas but call it 'super or premium'. Like RACEWAY stations. Their premium you will find are almost the same price a 'special' at the 'well known' stations like Mobil and Exxon...
i don't trust them

Unless you drive a piece of shit that needs a tune up or an overhaul, or on the flipside, drive a high performance vehicle, using super is pointless.
I could even maybe understand if you bought a decent car brand new and only used super from the day you bought it and that's all you'll use from there on out.
The octane difference between super and regular will not change the performance in most cars that have used regular the majority of their miles.
What I really don't understand, is the person that gets the mid-grade gas. Like, regular isn't good enough, but oh no, that super is just too high falootin', just gimme something in the middle.
Do these things:
When you change your oil, change your air filter. Don't let the oil change place do it, go to the auto parts store and buy it and do it yourself. Car can't breathe, car drives for shit. More gunk builds up in the carburetor than you'd realize. It'll take you 10 minutes and cost you maybe $15 tops. After that, take a look into the carb, maybe give it a shot of Gumout just to clean it off. Change the breather once a year or so.
Change your fuel filter. Depending on your vehicle, this may be tricky and or messy, so if you're not up to it, take it in to be done. It won't kill your wallet, and should be done once a year, but you can go two years usually and get away with it. Important note: Do some research (google is always a help, but the repair manual for $15 or so at the auto parts store will tell you) on how to relieve fuel pressure before you decide to do this yourself. Usually, you just have to remove the gas cap and that'll suffice, but your car may have special needs. If you're daring, and your fuel lines are rubber hose, you can actually just carefully clamp off the hoses on each side of the filter so you don't pour gasoline all over yourself.
Make sure your tire pressure is correct.
Check your alignment. This one is tricky though. Of course you can just let go of the wheel and see what happens and that usually works, but the machine at the mechanic can really only be the true judge. The bad news about this one is, if you do need your alignment fixed, you may get roped into buying new tires. In order to properly check alignment, your tire's tread needs to be flat, with as little or no wear as possible. Then again, it maybe the tires that are causing the bad alignment in the first place. Rotating your tires once a year helps.
If you live in Jersey, check this out. Take a look at your right front tire. It's probably more worn on the outside than the other tires. Thank jughandles for that.
Whether you use super or regular, those are things you should do to keep your vehicle running at it's best anyway.

Im not going to pay more for super. It costs me over $30 to fill my tank with regular. The price of gas is getting crazy and its just getting worse.

my car does not drive as well on regular. The ride starts to get choppy. I buy super and my car rides a lot smoother, besides by going into Jersey (which I do anyway, not going out of my way to get there) super there is about the same price as regular here in ny anyway.

When I bought my 1992 Camry new, I changed the oil in it to synthetic, and I added additives like slick 50 and tuff oil and other additives once in a while. I insisted on Super and drove the car for many years on it. When the car got to around 200,000 miles, I still used the synthetic, but started using Regual and did not notice any hesitation or pinging. I also added periodically some gas line additive, but have been using Regular since. It now has about 300,000 miles on it and everytime I have it inspected, the guy at the gas station shakes his head and asks how is it possible that a car with that many miles has next to no emissions. I look at the printout of the results and where mine might have 0.2, the tolerance allowable for that year with that many miles is always like 4.2 or something. What that tells me is that there is not really any wear taking place between the rings and cylinders and valves and their seats that is allowing unburned fuel to escape out the exhaust. My car never pings or knocks when I excelerate on Regular, so to me, Super is a myth.
What I was thinking about the gas stations is that since they buy the gas in bulk when they fill their tanks, I imagine that the Super tank they have was filled many minths ago and that the demand for it would be low because of the price. But they get fresh deliveries of Regular at the higher price and have the raise the price of regular accordingly. But, the Super is still sitting there, and since they havent used it... and it was at a cheaper price when they bought it and the lower-now more expensive grades were added after...are they jacking up the price of Super, even though it's not selling to differentiate the grades?

I've been putting super in my car since I bought it new. It's a Turbo and the owner's manual said to put 89/91 octane minimun, and I could not figure which it really meant. Also, I don't think i've ever seen 91 octane, but I did I would have put that in my car.

Check your alignment.
The alignment in my car has been slightly off since the day I bought it. Will that be a major problem eventually?
