I'm listening to last Thursday's show and there's talk of the old nursery rhyme that starts off with "Eenie Meanie Miney Moe..." now the next part of it I always knew of it as "catch a tiger by the toe..." However Ronnie and others have said that they remembered it differently and racial. That the next line as they knew it was "catch a n____r by the toe". I've never heard this, though I did recall the line being used in Pulp Fiction. How do you remember this going?

It seems from the show that people all over remember it differently.

I never heard it until "Pulp Fiction," either. And even then I thought it was just QT being QT.

I guess it all depends on how backwards your neighborhood was when you were a kid.

I remember saying "catch a tiger." But then in Pulp Fiction, Zed said "catch a nigga"

from wordorigins.org:

Early American versions of the rhyme tend to contain the line catch a nigger by the toe. In early British versions, chicken or tinker are used instead. With rhymes such as these, there is no "original" version and there are countless early variants. The use of nigger is just one variant among many.

I've heard it as 'tiger' and 'nigger' (of course I grew up in the neighborhood that made national news by mocking the James Byrd death dragging during a labor day parade).

Mostly I've heard piggy though.

In England, we used to say, 'catch a monkey by the toe'. I guess it's not much different than nigger.

Growing up, my neighborhood was very pc, the kind of place where naughty boys and girls went "tiger" knocking. On paydays I would consider myself "tiger rich," dropping cash like there was no tomorrow. When I would arrive home Friday night from partying, my parents would look up from their plates of "tiger" toes and accuse me of spending money like a "brickyard tiger."

"Ni**er knocking," "ni**er toes" and "brickyard ni**er"...what the fuck do those even MEAN?!?

Imagine all the time wasted just thinking this shit up in the first place.

The world fucking sucks.

Nigger Knocking - Ring and run

I don't get how this even got this label in the first place.

The implication is that black people started that old gag.

Did they?

I guess it's like Ron's old bit about things that rhyme not going together. Because they both, at least phonetically, start with N, the term makes sense. If it were just about inventing the game, you could call it "Shine Knocking" but it just hasn't the same ring to it. Know what I mean?
