Wow...I'm beging to think that Matt Groening's another disgruntled progressive, which I see as a good thing. Not only did he make comparisons between Burns and just about EVERY Republican in America, and how a few people own the majority of the media, but he also mentioned Rupert Murdock controlling all media. Boy oh boy, and this isn't the firs time he's done this. There was an episode a while back when Lisa ran for president of her school, and campagined about the real issues, then Skinner and the faculty screwed her over. Come to think of it, Groening's been doing alot of episodes like these lately. So what do you guys think of it?

I don't see how he satirized every Republican, though he certainly satirized Rupert Murdoch. Despite his jabs at the media, it got a little weird with running them off the road. I guess that was just supposed to add to the entertainment aspect.

Remember when they had Burns as one of the evil Republicans waaaaaaaaay back when Sideshow Bob was running for mayor of Springfield? That's really nothing new.
Same with bashing Murdoch/Fox. The show's wasted no chance to go after both for almost a decade now.
And hey, Bush and co. are in office right now, so they get the brunt of the new episodes. Don't you remember when they had Clinton say he was "a terrible president" while he was in office?

Wasn't the Count Chocula ripoff also one of the evil Republicans? Or am I just confusing that episode with the one where Homer has to try and smuggle sugar into Springfield?
The real issue, however is: why are people still watching the Simpsons, when there are better shows to be found on in that hour?

There's nothing better on. There's no reason to watch TV on Sundays before 9 PM when football isn't officially going, so shame on ANYONE watching ANYTHING.
Se7en, you're right, the Chocula parody was from the sugar episode.
I'll bet AJ will know who the Republican council was exactly...but I THINK it was Dr. Hibbard, Orville Redenbacher, Mr. T., George Bush (The first) and Mr. Burns.

Ok, I always thought you were insane in your wrestling posts, but this just confirms it to me.

no. no. no.
Orville Reddenbacher, Mr. T., and the original George Bush were
the Stonecutters' world council.
The Republican counil in Springfield was Mr. Burns, Dr. Hibbert,
and 'Birch Barlow'--a Lucius Sweet-level parody of Rush
Limbaugh.
This episode was less obvious than last week's which was god-
awful. I think they did an OK job of being obvious/not being
obvious. But they both had a message, which is ehh.
edit: All right. I looked at the online Simpsons bible (snpp.com)
and they claim the rebulican council includes Rainer Wolfcaste,
and 'ghoul' that drinks blood. So he was in both episodes. Also
in that episode Smtihers helps Bart and Lisa because helping
Burns conflicted with his 'choice of lifestyle.' Ha! Not always
true, as we know.

Would ya look at the size of that kid's head! It's the size of a
planetoid and it has it's own weather system! Looks like an
orange on a toothpick! I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like
Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts! Aye, now that was
offsides, now wasn't it? He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight,
on his huge pillow.</center>

There's nothing better on.
There's plenty better on.
There's this ridiculous myth that's still being perpetuated, that "Simpsons is still funnier than most other shows on TV today!"
Maybe a few YEARS ago. But not today.

Freakshow is right except that there were two more Republicans: Burns' lawyer and that Texan who wears the coboy hat and bolo tie who appears in various episodes.
And I think Barney started drinking again in the episode where they were reenacting the Civil War battle. Homer convinced him that in order to play General Grant he had to drink.
