View Full Version : can eddie murphy still be funny

oh the great thing about messageboards - you can get feed back from all types of people.
but i would really like to get the opinions of lil jimmy, billy, gary, harry, et al. dudes in the biz.
but personally, i gauge it like this: if you can still do a 1 hr comedy show, no matter how many corny movies you put out, you're still funny, ie. chris rock.
delirium and raw are classics, but they're also 20 yrs old. i think dr doolittle (and all the other shit) sapped the comedy straight out of eddie.
discuss.

Supposedly the guy was doing "secret" stand up appearances a couple years back where he absolutely killed...apparently this was assumed to be "practice" for a larger tour, but nothing came of it.
But to answer your question...a little. What I heard of him in "Shreck" was alright, and parts of the first "Nutty Professor"...but other than that, it's been pretty slim pickings.
Shit, at this point, Charlie Murphy is funnier than he is.

[color=purple]I couple of months ago I actually had Harry (as well a few friends from this very board) over to watch some classic stand-up, Delirious being among them. Which of-course led to the "what-the-fuck-happened-to-this-guy" conversation. It's hard to believe he was ever that funny.
Supposedly the guy was doing "secret" stand up appearances a couple years back where he absolutely killed...apparently this was assumed to be "practice" for a larger tour, but nothing came of it.
That would surprise me. Whenever he is asked if he would ever consider a return to the stage, he's been almost incredulous at the mere possibility, saying that stand-up was a way of him advancing to the next level, and wondering why in the world he'd ever wanna take such major steps backwards.
Needless to say, hearing that made me wanna puke. But now, I almost hope that Mojo is right and that maybe he was just posturing... perhaps he did try to get back into it and just blew. Kinda hard to imagine that news like that wouldn't have made the rounds, and I know I've never heard tale about it, but I still prefer that theory to him javing turned into such a dick.
To answer the original question, 20 years is an awfully long time to go in between gigs. Even if he had the material, and I seriously doubt that would be the case, but even if he did, the fearlessness, timing and over whelming presence that was a "Delirious" 22 yr old Eddie Murphy is surely no longer the case.
On name alone, as well as a fondness & respect for Raw, Delirious and his days at SNL, he'd get a free pass for the 1st 5 minutes or so, but after a while he'd have to be funny, and again, I just don't see it.

Yeah, I never found out whether or not it was just a rumor...but hey, even Seinfeld when back to standup. And all the famous comedians that go back to standup after "making it" seem to all universally have a love for the stage that doesn't die.
But you're right that Eddie just seems like a prick. Steve Martin became the same thing...they just started taking themselves WAAAAAAY too seriously considering what made them famous.

He's playing it safe. He' s given up on being the shocking comedian. Also, these kids movies are the easiest way to earn a paycheck. If a movie is rated (G-PG 13) kid friendly and looks semi-retarded. children lose the minds.
I miss this:

No dear, marriage sucked it out. He made a promise to his wife to do work that their children could see. My thought is that I wouldn't expose children to Pluto Nash.

I don't think it's entirely Eddie's fault. Certain things have changed for him over the years, like that fact that he has alot of children and I think it's hard to be that raunchy when you have kids. Once a comedian starts making babies it's usually all over. i.e. Dana Carvey, Jerry Seinfeld

He'll wait for his kids to be in their late teens and slowly start working blue and edgy again.
I'll be watching 48 hours, then a few days later Ill catch Daddy Day care and notice how different that bastard is nowadays.
I think the last time he cursed is when mimed fuck you in a car scene with DeNiro in SOWTIME.

Eddie Murphy IS funny within the context of family comedy....kids love him...parents love him....
he's not the 20 something doing standup anymore...he's a big-time Hollywood celebrity who makes shit loads of money doing kids movies....
whatever desire he had to retain his street credibility as a comic was lost the minute he cashed his paycheck for The Nutty Professor.
Bottom line is family comedies with an urban edge aimed at white families earn more at the Box Office than the black comedies he did in the early stages of his career. I think it was a wise career move financially...and he could always turn it around if he chooses to...

I'm not so sure about that, Jeff. Meet my friend here---

And his little pal---
Billy Crystal: Hi, Jeff! I stink!
Well, we gotta go!! I'm gonna let them run free into the woods and then get in my car and leave!

Shit, at this point, Charlie Murphy is funnier than he is.
But is that really saying anything?
Eddie Murphy is about the most inconsistently funny guy out there. I thought he killed in Shrek, the Nutty Professor, and Bowfinger. Then he goes out and does something like Holy Man, Metro, or Pluto Nash. Again, very funny, but inconsistent.
