I get what you're going through and why you wanna get rid of them...but ouch.

I once ran over a baby bird on accident with my bike as a kid and I felt guilty for a week. If I had done it on purpose I probably would have wept like a wee baby.

The same one from the bar who gave you her number?

I one time trapped and killed an opposum that used to live in my back yard. I took pictures which I would be more than happy to post. You should have seen the teeth on this thing.

Funk - do not feel to bad, think of them more as a problem then a very cute, defensless, helpless little creature who had no chance what so ever to fight back or run.

In reality, I would have done the exact same thing and never even thought twice about it. Fuck birds, they are filthy and loud. I hate a bird and a squirrell. I do not feel bad about killing either of them.

I heard this things work..

http://www.birdbusters.com/images/scare_eye_balloons.jpg

Heres more (http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=scare+bird/v=2/l=IVR/*-http://www.birdbusters.com/scare_balloons.html)

The idea is that they see these things and they think its a predator. it spins in the wind and is unnerving to them. It also has a few silver and red mylar streamers that to a bird's perception, resembles fire and they are scared of that too. You can also get red and silver mylar streamers and tie a small rock around it and toss it up near their nests (if you can get the streamer to hang onto a branch) and they will think their tree is on fire and vacate.

I think that's revolting.
You get ZERO sympathy from me.

You knew they were leaving in about a week and you DROWNED baby birds? You couldn't wait seven fucking days?

You knew well enough what was going to happen (since it's happened for the past 4 year) and you weren't smart enough to take preventative measures, so instead you drowned baby birds in a bucket. What a lovely way to die. I hope you feel good about yourself. At least a fucking mousetrap is instantaneous.

Torturing (which throwing birds in a bucket and watching them gasp for air certainly is) and killing wildlife is illegal. You could go to jail for up to a year for each bird that you deliberately drowned.

Oh, and so you know - the grackles likely would have stopped dropping their fecal sacs in your pool after you detroyed their nests - they seem to do it to keep their nests clean, so after the young leave the nest, they stop.

i really thought i might be able to power-wash them
out of the tree... i just bought one last year and just
started using it this year... it's 2,000psi but not nearly
strong enough... maybe a pro power washer guy has
something strong enough to blow the nests out of the tree
and they will eventually go away?

I thought your pool pole worked okay, though...

And no, they won't just go away. Your yard is apparently
providing them with a lovely habitat (grackles like to nest
near the water) so torturing baby birds this year isn't really
going to stop other grackles from coming back next year.

I'm with TooCute on this one. I think you would've been OK just keeping them over the fence or something. Set up birdhouses away from your pool maybe? I dunno...too graphic man. That wasn't kool.

I had a woodpecker show up on the roof right above my room, and it would wake me up everyday at 5:00am as it pecked a hole in our roof. After a couple of days I ran outside and nailed it with a baseball. It fell off the roof and hit the ground. Haven't seen it since.

I'd like to know why I found this to be so amusing. And if I were there while this took place, I'd help. Heck, I would've probably climbed the tree if I could and knocked the nests off to tumble to their doom.

And it's funny, because on saturday we (myself and one of the ministers) chased down this squirrel that was in the community room of our church, and beat it almost to death with a broom so we could scoop it in a dustpan and get it out. And before anyone decides to get on me for that, just take into consideration that this filthy thing was in there for about a week. We had to do [i]something[/b].

the reality is they are shitting ALOT in and around my pool and their poop can carry disease.
blah blah blah

That makes it okay to torture baby animals, I guess.

And if there are so many other nests in your area, why did you even bother knocking down one... seeing that it had babies in it... and then go knock down ANOTHER?

Did it make you feel better? Ha ha, I drowned four little babies!! I'm still going to get shit in my pool, but at least I tortured four babies!

It happens every year - you're familiar enough with it that you knew that it would end a week from now.

Here's an idea: how about making your pool area unattractive to the birds so that they don't next there in the first place? You put "little faith" in deterrants... have you ever tried them?

Have you considered opening your pool up a week later in the season so that when the birds are looking for nexting areas, the water doesn't attract them and they don't nest in your yard?

Did you really have no choice but to purposely drown a baby in your pool?

The fact that you're trying to justify it makes it all the more disgusting.

Ever consider trapping it?
You can buy a trap for a squirrel for like $20, or you could easily have called animal control and they would have come and taken care of it since it was inside a building.

Next time, let me come over, Funk. I'm good with animals- like St. Francis of Assissi! Do you know about him? He was a priest who had a magical flute and all the animals would chase him at high speeds!! I think it was an X-Game!!!

Hey man, don't sweat it. They're just birds, but even if you killed all of them there would probably still be more back the next year. So give the detterents a shot. then if they don't work go out there with a twelve gauge and have a good old time.

Struggling with some guilt? You should be drowning in it! You knew that they were leaving in a week! You couldn't put off your pool opening?
You didn't even kill adults, just little babies. I just bought a house and my backyard is so wildlife friendly that ducks come to swim in my pool. I guess I won't be having you over anytime soon for their safety.
