OK, thus far into the new millenium, so-called "super groups" have sucked a mighty ass.

Contrary what anyone has said, or will say, Audioslave is easily one of the worst bands of the last five years...and their heinousness is made worse since they're made of key parts of two of the best bands of the last decade (Though Chris Cornell's horrendous solo album DID warn us ahead of time...oh, if only we had listened). Plus, their name is "Audioslave," which is only slightly less Nazi-awful than "Hoobastank."

This all brings us to the somewhat ballyhooed Velvet Revolver...essentially Scott Weiland, singer for STP, fronting the remnants of GnR.

I'm still on the fence about this. The first single, "Slither," is alright...miles better than anything Audioslave inflicted on us. It's a little disheartening because it doesn't really sound like GnR at all...the guitar solos sound a LITTLE like slash...but they're nothing former STP guitarist Dean DeLeo (No slouch himself) hasn't done at least a dozen times already...which leads to the MAIN problem; "Slither" sounds like any STP single from their first two albums. This is not a bad thing per se...but why break up your fucking band in the first place?

It's even more disheartening since STP went out of their way from their third album on to really try and make a "sound" for themselves, let Weiland shine as a frontman, and really grow beyond the early, "they just sound likea 'glammy' Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam" tags they had tossed at them left and right.

And Weiland looks rough in the video. He always had a bit of the "junkie chic" look to him, but now he just looks ill, gaunt and strung out.

I'm still curious to hear the album...just because the music Weiland made and GnR made should blend much easier than the complete opposites Soundgarden and RATM were.

I would DEFINITELY, however, see them live. They've already said they plan on playing the old STP and GnR hits at their shows, which will make up for the new material if it turns out to blow.

The only thing I like about Audioslave is at the end of that one song where it sounds like Chris Cornell is being punched in the throat as he changes pitch. Something about 'showing us how to live' or somesuch.

Chris Cornell

his voice is like that distortion sound on the guitar that Boston had... after listening for a while it becomes unpleasant and unchanging...

i'm glad someone else agrees with me here. say what you want about his politics. zach delarocha has a much better voice than cornell.

They've already said they plan on playing the old STP and GnR hits at their shows,

Axl is going to let them get away with that??

btw i'm downloading velvet revolver now, i'll get back with my feelings on it...also check out "take me out" by franz ferdinand. good tune, dont know if the rest of their stuff is as good but worth a listen.

I liked RATM I liked Soundgarden, albeit Audioslave wasn't the greatest but they were easily "decent." Compared to the other shit music out there they easily topped them. If audioslave is in your worst bands of the past five years, you haven't been watching TV or listening to the radio at all. "Story of the year" anyone?

As for "velvet-revolver", slither sounded pretty good, I have only heard it a few times so my decision is not final. I think that they will be alright like audioslave, not necessarily better than the bands they came from but interesting nonetheless. You're right about Slash though, he doesn't really sound like "slash" anymore but hey, maybe he's a bit rusty. I am definitely excited as to what velvet-revolver will do.

Audioslave is even worse because they had the components of GREAT bands, and they STILL sounded so bad. Bad emo/nu-metal bands are EXPECTED to suck out of the gate, so it's not as much of a "shock" when they turn out to blow.

Personally, I can't wait for this to be released. Scott is easily my favorite frontman of the last 15 years or so & since the one thing I hated about GnR was AXL, this sounds like it will be quite a treat.

Having mostly given up on today's music & having stopped following music news (can't watch MTV anymore & I don't bother to look for music news online), when I heard the single I hoped it was new STP. At the end, however, in a stroke of luck the DJ actually announced the name of the song & band & I immediately went to the computer to look them up. Man, was I surprised.

Certainly this couldn't possibly suck as hard as Audioslave (what a monumental disappointment), but I hope it surprises & is actually good.

Anyone going to the Roseland show later this month? I'm going to look into getting tickets.

That's true, they were a big letdown. If it was Biggest letdown of the past five years i'd agree with it. But if your going to base them on two seperate bands merging, how many has their been in the past five years. A perfect circle?

By the way, the greatest merger of all time was a bunch of different musicians from various bands, most famous being Mike Patton from faith no more. A band called "Mr. Bungle". You can still find some of their stuff on Kazaa, they're amazing.

I think Velvet Revolver has some potential. Slither isn't exactly the greatest song, but it's not too bad. But after listening to it around the 3rd or 4th time, you get sick of it quick. I'm not considering buying the CD even though I'm a huge STP fan. I don't think it's worth it.

zach delarocha has a much better voice than cornell.

Delarocha rapped, while Cornell sings. I don't think you can really compare their voices. I think Cornell has a great voice. Or did, rather. Maybe it's just the songs he did with Audioslave. His voice is unique, so it's kool in its own way.

I loved Soundgarden, and I loved RATM. I thought I would like Audioslave, and I did for a bit, but now I hate them, and wish all of them would just die. Or at least stop.

I don't know if A Perfect Circle counts. They weren't really a "super group," since everyone outside of Maynard was pretty much a musical "also-ran."

And EVERY Mike Patton project outside of FNM has been like that.

I was never for the merging of RATM and Cornell. Two seperate bands, both made great music in their time, then they wanted to come back with a certain arrogance that would make everyone think they are the official saviors of rock, that put me off. Not to mention that the songs were just not as good as the hype that surrounded them but whatever, i did a fine job of ignoring them and i'll continue to do so.

As for Velvet Revolver, they have great potential to make balls out music, so long as Weiland doesn't fuck anything up with his on again off again smack habit. I like the song but the video outright sucks...the way Weiland is dancing(which is too Jagger-esqe) and moving, uch. With the way he looks i don't think i've wanted to stab someone this fiercely since i saw Fergie shaking her skanky twig ass in the "Hey Mama" video.

I kept having Audioslave running through my head not because of how they sound but moreso what Mojo coined as so-called "super groups". This album sounds NOTHING like Audioslave.

That being said, this record as a whole did really grab me. yeah there are parts that sound reminiscent of some of the early STP vocal techniques which I have no problem with. There are parts that sound like parts of the old school G'n'R. Again I have no problem with that. Overall this is a really nice musical journey that takes me back to a time when it was just about rock and roll. It feels stripped down and raw at times and the songs are strong and well structured. This record is not great but it will be in my CD player for some time. I want to listen to it again and I really think it will grow on me. The solos are really good (coming from one who thiunks the art of the solo has been lost). This thing does kick ass in spots and Dirty Little Thing is by FAR the strongest track on the record. I really like how I was able to listen to it for the first time not even knowing what the single sounded like. I knew Slither was the single but no having heard it yet, it seemed to gel right in with the rest of the record instead of being that song that stands out because, well, it is the single. I need to make more of a habit of that because it was a fun listen. I recommend it to anyone who loved G'n'R and the first (maybe even second) STP record. If anything this has a real Sex Type Thing/It's So Easy/Wicked Garden/Mr. brownstone vibe to it. Oh, there are 2 really strong ballads on here which just made me melt cause I love a good ballad. Go ahead call me a sap (thanks :)) but I love those kind of songs.

i was talking with a buddy last night about VR's sound and i like the "Pieces' song but the sound of Slash's guitar has not changed from the sound he had with GnR. some may think "that's his sound' but when i hear the lead in Pieces i'm thinking Sweet Child....

i compare it to the guitarist of Bostons unique sound but it never changed and became repetitious. With the 15 albums or so Grand Funk had put out the guitar sounded a bit different in each, he'd change his guitars and it was a 'fresh' sound each time you heard it. The vocals have to sound the same but the guitar distortions can change very easily and still sound great...
