Yet another reason why cell phones suck, although I would like to see someone burst into flames only seconds after their annoying little ring tone went off.

hell my father used to leave the car running while filling it up. nothing ever happened.

Firefighters believe the cell phone ignited vapors coming from the car's fuel tank as it was being filled. It doesn't take much of a charge to ignite gasoline vapors, New Paltz fire chief Patrick Koch told WCBS-AM's Peter Haskell. "Anything, really. Women's nylon stockings when they get out of a vehicle, that can cause a spark, too."

That's why motorists are told "don't use their cell phones when they're pumping gas. Really, it's deadly," Koch said.

For those of you who don't know New Paultz, if this kid was a student up there I'm putting the odds that he was either lighting a doobie or had one hangin' out of his pie hole at 99.9999%.

Plus this is the town that was doing same-sex marriages a month ago so spontaneous flaming happens pretty frequently up there.

I know if Im sitting here and my cell rings, it makes my screen get the shakes, and if Im by a radio it gets all static. But I NEVER will turn off my engine while filling up, unless a cop was next to me. They only way I can see it as causing a problem would be if the gas was pouring out the hose onto the hot exhaust pipe or something. On the other hand, if the guy had his phone on his hip and it started ringing and he was next to the nozzle while filling the tank, the static field that causes the problems I described above could cause a reaction in the vapors and might cause it to ignite. I rarely keep my phone on my hip, unless Im shopping. When Im driving I keep it in the car.

the cellphone didnt do it. watch mythbusters.

what happened was, the kid never touched the car when he got out, and so the electrical charge that always shocks when you first touch the metal cause a spark and blew it up

That's exactly why I always go to full server (other than the fact that I am too lazy to pump my own gas). I never knew that these things caused fires at gas stations. That's awful!

The Mythbusters proved that it was not possible.

I totally agree with this. They did pretty much every possible scenario including emersing the cellphone in gasoline trying to get it to cause an explosion. I think it must've been something else.

Episode 2: Cell Phone Destruction, Silicone Breasts, CD-ROM Shattering
In this episode, Jamie and Adam test several explosive theories. Can chatting on a cell phone while pumping gas cause the pump to blow up?

Well, my physics pals tell me you need three things for this to happen, or any fire:

-Combustible Material [Gas, here]

-Oxygen [plenty of that in the air]

and lastly:

-An ignition Source

The last one can range from a spark to simple pressure, given the right circumstances.

So, where the ignition source? Well, around a car, I can think of a dozen. Cel Phone? Only real spark I can think of being generated is perhaps, when plugging/unplugging from a charger/adapter, and even that I'd say is a rare event. Plus you need a certain concentration of gasoline and wow now you got ME sucked into this ARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHH....

The interesting thing about the Mythbusters episode is that is showed that there is more likelyhood of a spark igniting from the static discharge of your feet rubbing up against the carpet in your car and igniting when you touched the gas pump. Granted it said that most people ground themselves unknowingly when they touch any metal surface of their car as their getting out of it. Though on rare occaisions there is a fire caused by sparks. As rare as this happens, it is still far more likely to happen than a fire that could be caused by a cellphone.

I once saw that a lit match thrown into a pail of gasoline will be extinguished as it hits the liquid. Not that this has anything to do with it...we are talking about vapors and source of spark from some source. If you are filling the tank next time and look towards the nozzle in the fill hole, youll be able to see the vapors if you look carefully. It will look like waves in the air. My guess is that if a phone was in that vapor and it started ringing, the disruption of electrons in the air as a result of the transmission of the radiation from the phone has the potential to ignite the vapors. Often, I can tell before my phone rings that it is about to ring if its near my monitor or my headset or radio by that disruption I described earlier. Im not saying that it does cause a vapor to ignite, just that it seems to have the potential to.

Cell phones could only ignite a fire in gasoline vapors if for some reason it was sparking with a reasonable amount of voltage to ignite the vapors of the fuel.

Static discharge when you touch a piece of metal can get into the KV range easily, but there is so little stored potential when you walk around or rub against something that you only get the mild shock.

The only way that I could see a cell phone igniting a gas fire is if the phone were damaged where the battery terminals met and there was an arc. Even in this case, conditions would have to be ideal for a spark produced from a 3V battery. A regular (undamaged) cell phone simply receiving or sending a signal would not ignite a fire. Electromagnetic waves do not work that way.

Spark-gap transmitters, on the other hand....

Oh, and blackbird- what you are hearing over your monitor or headset is called "intermodulation". When you have a transmitter nearby to a device that emits sound (TV, stereo speakers, headphones, etc) and the device is not designed to reject spurious signals, you will get this kind of interference. You can get it from cell phones, cordless phones, baby monitors, etc. It's more likely to happen in higher frequency signals, such as those above 600MHz. Small circuit paths on the system board act as antennas and receive the signal and somehow merge it into the audio that is already coming from the speakers. It's similar to hearing some CBer with an (illegal) linear amp being audible through telephones or stereos.
