Ah, but where did it come from? It's not like it mystically appeared out of nowhere.
I hope to fucking Christ this leads to us finding a MOUNTAIN of WMD's. We could use the credibility boost, and FAST. And Bush can say "I told you so" all he wants if this turns into something big. In that case, those of us that said there wasn't anything were wrong. I hope I AM wrong and we stop looking like schmucks...or at least less of a giant super-schmuck.
The second part of that story is the REAL kick in the balls.

I'm with Jeff. Making more out of a single old artillery shell than it really means would satisfy the most fervent Bush supporters in America, but would only further undermine our credibility in Iraq and the world, (if that's even possible). The standard for finding WMD that would justify the pre-war claims are thousands of times greater than a single shell, and any statement that sounds like an "I told you so" will make things worse for us.
Also, it is the fact that we haven't found WMD that has forced the Bush administration to make what few positive decisions in Iraq that it has. The fact that there was no post-war plan indicates that there was no plan to "re-build" Iraq and leave behind a stable democracy. The fact that Ahmed Chalabi was flown in on military transports and is still recieving over $400,000 a month from the US means the original plan was for us to show whatever WMD we found to the world, install Chalabi as a Shaw of Iran-like strongman and leave. While that would have satisfied the American public that we launched the war in our national security interests, but the Arab/Muslim world would see one more American-backed Middle East authoritarian country. Maybe it still better than the way things are now, but we at least got credit for not faking a WMD find in Iraq, and we had a chance to leave Iraq as an example of us living up to our principles in the Arab world. Unfortunately, we've botched it so bad that I don't thing we can achieve anything that can reasonably called a success any time soon. But still, the only thing that we can reasonably expect to be judged on in Iraq is the quality of life and politics that we leave behind for the Iraqis. Making a show of some crusty old artillery shell will only make things worse. The only positive is that this thing, while exposing a couple of bomb techs, didn't get used on unsuspecting troops or Iraqis. We should use this to protect our troops from the insurgents, who may have more of these things, but we can't make political hay out of it without shooting ourselves in the foot - again. I expect that's just what the Bush administration and its supporters will do though.

we should make the prisoners rat hole the bombs and video tape it. that way even if we do find the WMD's, the whole world still thinks we are just as big of fuck ups as before.

I dont get it. We're a superpower, right? We can pretty eaily make a bunch of really crappy WMDs, right? Why not produce a bunch of low-grade nukes and chemical weapons, plant them, and tell the whole world, "I told you so"?
See, while thats an awful thing to do , and it would be a terrible thing if it ever got found out, It would also go a long way towards restoring some credibility.
Also, it really does seem to be on par for Bush. I mean, come on! Its perfect.

How long until we'd see pictures of soldiers chasing each other around holding the missiles as penises and poking each other in the asses?
We haven't shot ourselves in the foot enough times as it is?

I recalll hearing a report about how its difficult to fake bombs based on radioactive decay and what now...we couldn't just put bombs there with new radioactive material...it would have to be somewhat old and the materials would have to be consistent with a bomb used in the iraqi armory

Right, but I think the idea is that there's obviously more where that came from.

I was watching MSNBC, and they were saying that they insurgents probably didn't even know that it was a chemical weapon--It was set up just like any other roadside bomb, as opposed to a manner that would've made use of the Sarin.
Another thing is that I believe that Sarin Gas has a lifespan of about 2 months. If this was Saddam's, how was the gas still lethal?

Right, but I think the idea is that there's obviously more where that came from.
Maybe. Or there was, at some point, more where that came from, but currently that is the last one left, or one of the last ones left. Seeing as whoever attacked our troops with it likely did not even know it was a chemical warhead, that seems likely. Of course, terrorists may have stumbled upon a sarin warhead stockpile, which know that they know they have sarin, could be awful. Either way, our troops are sure to find out now, unfortunately.
I hope this one was only one, because I don't want our troops being bombarded with sarin.

Hey, if WE find them, whos to say that these bombs arent going to pass the proper tests. And shit, if these thing are so easy to buy on the black market, why not buy us some and then plant them???

Can anyone confirm what Hippie brought up, that sarin only has an active lifespan of approx. two months? That seems pretty key if that's true and we're trying to link this to Saddam's regime.

According to the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Department of Energy they were most likely for hydrogen artillery weather balloons.

If those were actually for chemical and bio weapons labs, how come nobody has even mentioned them in about six months?

Here's some helpful info about the lack info about this sarin shell. (And, yes, I'm aware of the perceived biases of the author. There's still a lot of hard info in this article.) (http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0521/p09s01-coop.html)

"Perceived bias" is a good expression considering he's spent more time on the ground in Iraq looking for, finding and destroying Saddam's WMD than any other person on the planet, and that he's the only person I know of who actually said there was "no WMD" in Iraq. If there was any justice in this world he'd be getting to make butt pyramids out of this administration.
