Yankees don't want Spiderman logos

For those who don't know, Major league baseball is going to be putting spider man 3 logos on the bases, the on deck circle, and the pitching mound during the June 11-13 weekend. They're making 50 grand a team and 100 for Boston and New York. Yankees have already said though that they'll only use them during batting practise and one game rather than all of them. I think its commendable that they do it personally. Mussina's comment made me laugh.

"Where do we go from here? Chico's Bail Bonds on us?" Mussina told the Daily News.

I totally agree with them being opposed to this idea. And I would be even more proud as a Yankee fan if they hadn't already given in to wearing those awful logos on their helmets during the Japan trip. I nearly vomitted the first time I saw those...what a disgrace.

I wanted to to attack this statement, but I don't like attacking people I don't know & getting into heated e-fights.

So I'll just say this: I'm sure they're not the only ones who feel that this is "whoring" the league to some degree. It always takes someone to have the balls to say "no" first in order to get something to change. And if it's not going to be the Yankees or Red Sox to do it (the two teams who's traditions & present strength are likely the reasons they are two teams worth more money for these ads than anyone else in the league), then who does have the right or the balls to do so?

While we are all commending the Yankees on their stance against this commercialism, let's remember something. The interlocking NY the Yankees use is probably the most recognized and marketed sports logo in the world. This means two things, in my opinion. 1) the Yankees are far from being above whoring themselves out. 2) Maybe they don't need the extra revenue as much as say the Indians or Expos because they sell so much merchandise. It's a lot easier to take a stand against this movie marketing when you make so much from this other source.

I'm originally from Indiana, so I've always tried to follow the Cardinals and the Cubs (not that following the Cubs most years has been that hard to do).

I have mixed feelings toward the Orioles as it takes forever to get there from Northern Virginia and it seems like they block any chance of Virginia/DC getting a team.

As far as the endorsement thing goes, I figure the real reason the Yankees are fighting it has very little to do with principle and more to do with thinking they should get more money for it. But I'm so far removed from the picture that my opinion counts for very little.

Personally I think the Yankees decision not to go all the way with this scared Selig and his cronies into thinking that maybe once it actually happened he would have to deal with a shitstorm. Players would immediatley begin to claim that they couldn't focus on the game, certain pitchers would likely bitch that the logos broke their concentration. For the money they were making off the promotion, it certainly wasn't worth going through.
