The French claim came in handy about a year ago during the whole French boycott movement going on across the country (leave it to Vince to try to cash in on negative feelings against other countries). Since that furor settled down, they went back to hailing from Canada (which still comes in handy, since there's not much a red-blooded American fan hates more than a Canadian*).
