Pixies to play Lollapalooza

Hopefully finding food there won't be an issue for these two...

They'll find food, but it'll be $12 for a burrito and $6 for a bottle of water.

ugh .....

the potential for a lineup of pixies, sonic youth, flaming lips, pj harvey and morrissey may be amazing ....

but the logistics of the hellhole that is randall's island: if it rains an inch, it'll be a muddy, shitty mess or it it'll be an absolute dust bowl .....

can't bring anything in, then you're stuck with overpriced dreadful food and coors light on tap for ten bucks .....

i won't go into the torture of being surrounded by 15,000 meatheads, 'mtv punks' and general festival-going jackasses .....

if this was ten years ago, i'd sleep out to get tix ..... now i wish they opted for the hammerstein or a string of bowery shows -- hell, i'd slum it at roseland .....

i'll hold out hope for december

The first three [four?] Lollapalooza's were held in someplace called Waterloo Village up in north New Jersey; working at a radio station then i was lucky enough to attend the very very first, and they were just the coolest ever:

1991: Main Stage: Jane's Addiction, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Living Color, Nine Inch Nails, Fishbone, Violent Femmes, Body Count (with Ice T), Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band

1992: Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush, Temple of the Dog Side Stage: Jim Rose Circus, Sharkbait, Archie Bell, Porno for Pyros, Cypress Hill, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine

1993: Main Stage: Primus, Arrested Development, Alice in Chains, Dinosaur Jr., Fishbone, Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Babes in Toyland, Front 242 Side Stage: Sebadoh, Cell, Mutabaruka, Luscious Jackson, Mosquito, Mercury Rev

Now THERE were some shows.

::sigh::

Wow; I keep re-reading those line-ups; for the two who might give a shit, some memories popping in my head:

1991: Janes Addiction coming on Exactly when it started raining. Wonderful. Living Colour playing a Ball-Smashing cover of the Clash's 'Should I Stay or SHould I Go" Watching Perry and Ice-T sing a song whose lyrics were basically

Perry: "Dont Call Me Whitey, Nigger...'
Ice-T: Dont Call me Nigger, Whitey...'

and this sounds so bad, but early on during the day was a band that I couldnt tell if the crowd liked or disliked, coz there was an awesome water cup barrage going to, and coming from, the stage. Later on in the dinner tent I sat with my radio station and got into a nerdy conversation with the guy in the band, asking how he was playing to so many sequences, as this was pretty early to be playing to sequnced synths. Talks of ADATs were the main topic, and years later I realize the fucker was Trent Reznor.

1992: Wow did I luck out I worked security ushering the acts to and from the radio booths; I wont bore you with the pics but i met basically everyone, except for a band that went on real real early in the day: Soundgarden. Ditto with the first or second band. The place is emplty but filling up, it takes a while logistically for people to get in, so I watch with not too many people as this band Rage Against the Machine plays to a 1/3 full field. Met Jim Rose too, what a fuck up.

Wow I miss those days. Almost every bad on those bills were still in their 'hungry' stage. The Chili Peppers were not the piece of Crap that sings Scar Tissue and Under the Bridge. The band I saw was a funk metal force of nature. Get 'Mothers Milk' and just get blown the Fuck away. Sigh.

The problem is that as the travelling festival shows got bigger, it attracted bigger bands. And they wanted more of the spotlight.

And I met Jim Rose once. It was only in passing, but he seemed a very interesting fellow. Wish I could have sat down and talked with him for a while. Of course, he was opening for nine inch nails and Marilyn Manson, and I wanted to get in before Manson started.

I only went to the Lollapalooza festivals from the '94 show on, but for me, nothing beats the Tibetan Freedom Festivals for variety and quality, and I managed to trek to each of the American ones.

I can't find complete band listings for the years the Festivals went on ('96-'99), so if somebody CAN, help a brutha out.

I really really like the lineup this year but the people who go to concerts lately are pissing me off so I'll probably have to pass. Last Lollapalooza I went to was in '94 and I had a great time.

Is Randall's Island the only NJ/NY stop?

Never been to a show there; anyone? Whats it like?

it's under the triboro bridge, you walk into a huge fairway may a square block filled with vendors, port-a-johns and auxillary stages .....

depending on the size of the show, they open up the downing staduim (it's basically for track/field) with the main stage at the mouth of a cement horseshoe .....

clear channel plans on building a 'jones beach' sized/style venue for the concert circuit .....

but the logistics of the hellhole that is randall's island: if it rains an inch, it'll be a muddy, shitty mess or it it'll be an absolute dust bowl .....

MojoPin,

Lollapalooza 96: Psycotica, Screaming Trees, the Shaolin Monks, Screaming Trees, Rancid, Soundgarden, the Ramones and Metallica.

Lollapalooser 97: Orbital, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Eels, Devo, Prodigy, Snoop Dogg, Korn and Tool.

starting in 1997, they started holding it at the nissan pavillion, which is run by NAZIS. and therefore started SEATING. seating.. at a lollapalooza show. what retard came up with that idea. havent gone to one since.
oh yeah. also in 97, Snoop Dogg made everyone yell "WE LOVE YOU TUPAC!!!" so he could hear us from heaven.

Why pay good, hard earned money to mock people when it's so easy to do it for free?

That's just my philosophy.

Screaming Trees played twice?

That was probably a typo, although the year before The Jesus Lizard did play twice, once on the main stage and then closed the second stage.

That year killed Lollapalooza for me, just hearing Courtney Love butcher a Nirvana song made me want to puke.

I made 93-95 at the Charlestown Raceway in West V. Same deal as mentioned before either a dust bowl or muddy as hell. Actually it was always muddy as hell, because even if it didn't rain they turned on a big hose and sprayed the crowd. Good times.

the charlestown raceway was always classic.
the WU Tang Forever cd cover was taken from that show.

i remember about half the pit leaving in 94 after the beastie boys got done with their set. making the smashing pumpkins all mad, since they were the headliners. billy corgan said "thanks for sticking around for the rock show" all pissed off.
and one of the guys from pavement mooning the crowd since everyone was booing them. only to get a direct hit of mud right in his crack. classic
cant forget some dude next to me getting pelted by a plastic water bottle while everyone tossed the bottles in the air.

ahh. anyone else have any stories?
