A good buzz from the indie houses last year was a rebel teen movie called "Thirteen". Catherine Hardwicke's (bigtime production designer)debut, directed and co-wrote (with 13yr old actress Nikki Reed who plays Evie) an original low budget drama about a young girl who hooks up with the wrong friend.
Holly Hunter stars (and produced) as an L.A. trailer trash mom who is trying to be the best mother she can, and she enables all the other dysfunctional people around her. A home hairstylist, a recovering drunk, and in love with a younger guy fresh out of rehab (Jeremy Sisto gives a fine job as a good hearted man on the edge). Her daughter Tracy (amazing Evan Rachael Wood) goes the slut route overnight with the school cool tramp Evie. The shoplift, hook up with the brutha's in the hood, sell drugs, and have sex with strangers. Heavy duty stuff.
This is a standard teen rebel film that breaks all the rules, graphic drug use and simulated sexual situations pepper it up (look for a full nude scene by Holly Hunter). The direction is superb (and the behind the scenes crew is mostly women) and talented actors rule the film. Much like Larry Clark's classic "Kids" and Jonathan Kaplan's "Over the Edge", this joins the ranks as one of the best. :bobby:
