Some people took it as a tribute to the fallen heroes, others took it as Koppel trying to politicize the war in an election year.

In my opinion I took it as Ted Koppel's disapproval of the war. There are also over 100 Americans killed in Afghanistan but their names were not announced. Koppel was on Air America radio during the day and called the Bush Administration the worst of all time. Thanks for making it look like our brave military men and women died in vain over in Iraq you pompous jackass, Ted Koppel

All he did was read the names.

And YOU took it a certain way. By that logic, someone could just take Bush's reading of the 9/11 victims as HIM being a pompous jackass.

The dead are dead. And this increasing air of, "if we don't see it/hear it, it's not so bad" is getting ridiculous.

I look at it as Koppel giving idenityt to the people who have died, something that HASN'T been done thus far. Was it self-serving as well? No doubt. But these guys don't have their version of the Vietnam Memorial yet. If other people had their way, these men & women probably wouldn't get their due until this was all "done"...and how soon do you see THAT happening?

the decision of the administration to not allow pictures of the coffins to be shown, and the decision of Bush supporters who own TV stations to not show the Koppel show both seem alot more politically motivated (and arguably more disrespectful to the fallen) than ABC's decision to air this program.

You stated some valid points Mojo, but the war in Iraq is a highly unpopular war. about 45% of the people in the US are against the war, and many countries around the world are against the war and occupation of Iraq. Koppel has always been noted as being partial.

Many people need to realize that we are fighting a war on another front. We have about 13,000 troops committed in Afghanistan and though not that much is covered in Afghanistan, our troops there are still facing tough resistance. We need to mourn all the dead military personnel equally, and eliminate the cheapening of their deaths by bringing politics into the picture

Well, for better or worse, Afghanistan, while far from stability, isn't anywhere NEAR being the clusterfuck Iraq is, which is why, unfortunately, gets most of the attention.

Like the old news saying goes, "if it bleeds, it leads." Doesn't make it right, but that helps explain the sadly predictable mindset as to why those killed in Iraq get more attention...there's more of them. The numbers of our dead in Afghanistan don't come close to what we're losing in Iraq, which is essentially at at least one soldier a day. Afghanistan is more "done" than Iraq can hope to be at this point. Yes, Afghanistan outside of the major cities is pretty unstable, but you don't see the massive resistance our forces are currently encountering in Iraq. Iraq still is very much an active type of "war"...Afghanistan is more "holding our ground." And ultimately, the two are NOT the same war. They do not go hand-in-hand, no matter what some people assume. Reporting on one in no way means we must report on the other in the same breath. By that thinking, our news channels/shows need to report on our forces in Haiti any time they bring up Iraq or Afghanistan, since we had a pretty signifcant troop insertion there as well.

Lumping the dead in Afghanistan in with those killed in Iraq, to me, would be pretty insulting to those killed in either conflict, since, let's finally face it at this point, they were both fighting very different wars.

And, along the lines of what you said, yes, this is a pretty unpopular war, basically splitting this country down the middle. But, that means 1 out of every 2 people is going to take what Koppel did differently.
