Collins now refusing to negotiate a new contract (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1790040)
I dont see why the Giants would even want to resign him, you have Manning, do they want a pretty good, very highly payed bench warmer?
Looks like Accorsi is ready to release him unless the Giants want to pay 7 mill to a guy whos not gonna play...

they have to keep collins. and what have manning/ palmer?
i'm really hoping they're keeping manning to trade to beef up their line. collins is a very good qb, as long as he has more that 2 seconds to heave the ball.

if they keep him, it'll cost 7 mil. but if they cut him, it'll cost 8.95 mil. at least thats my understanding it. i really wish they'd keep him for one more year, because when the conditions are right, he's a very good qb. yeah, he's got fumble-litis, and cant throw on the move, but he's earned another year, and manning isnt ready for this shit. on top of that, a year with manning means a high draft pick for the fuckin chargers. the hell with that.

Funny, I thought starting a rookie QB is the very definition of rebuilding with youth.

The problem with the Giants is this:
Are they simply a step or two from a championship? If so, this makes some sense. A first round pick next year is definately worth a championship in the very near future.
Or are they trying to rebuild? If this is the case, they are retarded. You keep the veteran QB to groom the rook. You keep future picks.
It seems to me that Collins, as well as Fassel have been goats. Neither is really at fault for the performance of the Giants the last two years. They have had an insane number of injuries, especially on the line and secondary.
Unfortunately, their backups played like backups last year. Who knows what kind of year Collins would have had. I mean, generally guys perform best when they are auditioning for the rest of the league. He also seemed genuinely excited to help mentor Eli.
Ohh well. Hopefully they'll pick up a veteran to help Eli out.
But more than anything Collins is a definate Fassel guy; and when you've got a control freak like Caughlin, it doesnt surprise me that he wants to get rid of Collins.

The point isnt whether or not keeping Collins around would be a good thing or a bad thing. The fact is you have 2 QBs who are both making a considerably large amount of money. The are obviously going to keep Eli around, so Collins has to be the one to go if you want any cap room whatsoever. Sure having a veteran quarterback show Manning the ropes would be a good thing, but that would be the only thing Collins would be doing. Why would you pay a backup almost 8 mill? Its not like Coughlin would actually put him in there if he had a choice between Manning and Collins...

Thats my point--HE SHOULD NOT BE PLAYING BACKUP.
Michael Vick, easily the most dynamic player in the sport. When he was drafted Chandler had a year left on his contract, and Reeves resisted the urge to start the rookie, no matter how good he may be.
Vick sat, watched, learned, and when he finally got his chance the next year, he exploded. Yeah, he could have started his rookie season, and done pretty good, but Dan Reeves did the smart thing and waited.
Eli is going to be great. By the time it is all said and done, next year's 1st rounder will be insignificant compared to the career he's gonna have.
But, there's no reason to throw him to the wolves. Let Kerry start. let him go into training camp knowing that the job is his for the season. let him know that he wont be coming back. Yeah its gonna cost some money. Sign Eli to a deal where he's not making money until next year. I know they're somewhat limited because of the rookie pay scale, but they do have flexibilty.

I dont even know why Im arguing with you...youre right, Peyton didnt have a good rookie season BUT it was because the Colts sucked, despite having Faulk and Harrison. Just like Eli is going to struggle this season because the Giants blow. And lets face it, this is a team that has Toomer and Hilliard...Barber...and Eli is still going to struggle just like Peyton did with all the weapons he had...actually it was just 2...

well he got older, and the giants got a high draft pick. You don't have to do something wrong to lose your job. Collins is making too much money.
I guess keeping Collins would be great if he wasn't making so much. There's nothing to say that starting a rookie QB or benching him is a good idea or not. It really depends on the QB in my opinion. One could argue Peyton is a year ahead of other rookies that season because he did start then. The Giants will most likely wind up looking at best as good as SD after the trade considering what they gave up. But we'll see.
On another note I hear Coughlin likes Dayne, maybe even more than Barber....hmmmmmm

Here's what it boils down to- The Giants can't afford both, so Collins gets the axe. The Giants don't owe him a thing- without the Giants giving him a shot when the rest of the league wouldn't, who knows how Kerry would've ended up. He had a nice run, and I hope he does well wherever he ends up, hopefully as a starter somewhere.

Without Collins on the team, I am not longer a Giants fan. And there are around 75 or 100,000 other PSU alums that feel the same way.
Now the Jets, with 2 OL starters from PSU, now there's a team I can cheer for. I just wish they had kept Richie Anderson around.
I think Collins lands in Arizona or Dallas. Keep in mind Collins second year in Carolina, NFC championship game. Collins second year in Giants, trip to Super Bowl. Second year with next team...?

For everybody comparing Eli to Payton, remember that Indy is a much more forgiving place to play than New York. The Giants fans aren't going to sit while Eli throws 26 interceptions or whatever is was that Payton threw his first year. From Eli's body language on draft day, it doesn't look like he'll react well to criticism and he'll hear plenty of that in New York. Eli's already got a strike against him due to the draft day thing.
As for Collins, I think he stinks. I always have. However, I don't think Manning can sit behind him in the situation that they have. Being as he's so expensive and the Giants can save some cash by cutting him, I think they should.

I can't speak for all Giant fans, but I'd be able to deal with these numbers. Especially if he has a second year like this:

err....ah....err......man i'm getting the big knife........
this scares me now. I wouldn't be surprised if for just shits and giggles Billick started him the first game just to keep that stupid streak alive. Man I hate Billick as head coach. As an Off. Co. he's excellent. As a had coach he just comes off as an ass that makes wierd decisions at QB. I want to see Boller start 12 games this season whether he is sucking or not. No Wright, who really is a practice squad QB, and no Collins. God Marvin Lewis would've led this team as a dynasty. I am 100% sure in my mind that the Ravens would rival the Pats if Lewis was coach and if Billick left.
Let Arizona have him. He's not bad, just has no place in Baltimore and I don't like to think Billick might get some ideas.

Well I may have not enjoyed Collins' play inm the last season or two but he still WAS a good quaterback when he had protection. Yea yea I know...what person is not better when they are not getting their butts thrown to the ground. But Collins came to the NY stage with a SHITLOAD of baggage and not only Survived but brought the team to the Super Bowl (which seems like 10 years ago)
He is a buetter quarterback then we have seen in years, since Simms. Maybe Manning can do the job, maybe not...but it would have been the wise choice to keep Collins to teach Manning what not only he knows but also maybe how to handle NY. Because Collins came in with questions and he left with no one on the team wanting him to go.
That says alot
