Excuse my ignorance as i dont listen to much rock at all, yet I'll call Hendrix the cream of the crop. I'm another mindless teen that braces his hip hop community and culture while filtering out all the "jewel, guns, cars, and hos" crap that plauges the rotting mainstream. But, with the small amount of rock that i listen to, i like hendrix. you can say i like him because he's black, and i see him as a mentor for me as i learn how to play the guitar (aside from my beloved viola). But say what you will, i do, through my ignorance of not hearing a good portion of rock, think that he is the best thing since sliced bread. I once heard that he kept the volume on his amplifiar so high, that when anyone else tried to play his guitar, all the got was feedback. And yet when he played it, he created the best songs to ever hit the platform. Yup, Jimmy's the greatest!

Shit, even if we're just sticking to "black rock," Prince is miles better, as a singer, musician, guitarist...whatever.

PRINCE, BITCHES.

PRINCE.

TOMORROW!

And Jynx, let's hook up your viola with my beloved lute, find some pimp with a harpsichord, and make ourselves a BAND.

Nobody else could play Jimi's guitar like him.

The story goes, when he was growing up, he wanted to play guitar. His families meager earnings prevented him from getting the proper left-handed guitar. He went to a pawn shop, bought a right-handed guitar, and learned to play the mother-fucker upside down.

Fucking Brilliant.

What would we play? Mood building pieces from "Silence of the lamb"?

And yes, I do like prince. Have you heard the new song, "musicology" which is also the name of his new album? It's really good. But yes, I still say Hendrix is better.

Ever heard everything Clapton's done in the last 20 years?

It's actually a good thing Jimmy died young...then he wouldn't end up embarassing himself like Clapton, Page, Townsend, Van Halen et al did in later years.

And apparently Hendrix's favorite guitarist towards the end of his life was the dude from ZZ Top.

Go figure.

Calm down.

To me it sounded like you were setting the stage for an argument. I usually get that kind of "Ever heard of (enter wrestler here)..." question when I'm talking about bad performers in the wrestling section. Sorry I had my defences up.

Prince is a genius. He's a formidable musician, brilliant composer, agile vocalist and electrying composer.

However, for Jimi Hendrix to have accomplished what he did in 1967, to be sonically light-years ahead of everybody else, to have an orchestral vision of music, to expand the vocabulary of the blues to unthought of places, I think you have to give him immense credit.

I must give Hendrix the edge. Prince was able to utilize the innovations of Hendrix and others. So much of what Hendrix did, while he was clearly influenced by the likes of Curtis Mayfield, Albert King and Buddy Guy, was astonishingly original. He blew minds in a way that Prince didn't.

The guitarist from ZZ Top is Billy Gibbons. Laugh if you must, but his playing on Tres Hombres and Deguello is beyond killer.

That is easily the best post ive seen in along time, and the first post to make me laugh in along time. Jimi rocks, and the last time Prince put out a good song he was overshadowed by Micheal Jackson.

By what? His kid-touching? Michael Jackson hasn't had a great song in an even longer time than Prince did.

And I'm not saying Hendrix isn't awesome. I just threw it out that that if we were ranking "black rock stars," Prince IS better...a better musician (The guy can fluently play over a dozen instruments, and straddles about eight different musical genres at any given time, and his lyrics are MILES better than Jimi), and isn't just limited to the "heavy blues rock" Jimi did. Had Hendrix lived, he would have embarassed his early greatness far, FAR more than Prince has done in his later years. Guitar greats always, ALWAYS become guitar wanks. As bad as some of Prince's music has been, you can STILL hear his great stuff influencing people going to #1 today. Face fact...acts like Outkast would not exist if not for Prince, period. Hendrix was more technically (literally) influential...just in the way guitars generally "sound" now, and even that's pretty much pigeonholed to just "rock" these days. Nobody utilizes the actual creativity he had or shared...just his "crunch." Prince you can chalk up to directing rock, pop, funk, R&B, hip-hop, soul, blues, etc. for the last 25+ years.

A fair argument on both sides of the equation. I still think it's comparing Apples and Spoons.

Army Vet James Marshall Hendrix was one of the first to sculpt that feedback into something that was part of the music. He did play lefty; so the Strat was often indeed upside-down, but strung such that it play as would a righty, meaning big ole string up top.

Palm muting, his picking technique and a use of the whammy-bar for dive bombs was pretty much what made his a sound that few is any can copy, even today. There's just so much in the signal to deal with. So, you have Hendrix as an innovator of some of the most unique uses of electric guitar ever. I'd say Clapton's strength was more in building a blues vocabulary into rock; his was the licks everyone from Eddie on down will tell you they copped when first learning electric. So; huge, huge influence for both.

And Prince writes a killer song, plays most of the damn stuff, and produces a killer album with Grooves to Die for; and has a huge catalog, while Hendrix's was more player then writer or producer. These are very different musical qualities; sometimes one is utterly huge while the other is absent. So for me, Apples and Spoons. Not sure which is the Spoon.

[And I'm Two Degrees of Seperation from Hendrix. Hendrix saw a young Bob Fripp playing with King Crimson in 1969; was jumping up and down, screaming to anyone who could hear that this was the best band he'd ever heard. Running up to Fripp after the Gig, Hendrix asked Fripp to Shake his left hand 'Because It's closer to my heart.' Jimi didn't know Bob was a lefty too; who had simply forced himself to play righty. When Ron and Fez came out of the Tillman piece they were playing Bowies "Hereos" and the haunting guitar line, that legato single string line, singing out, is Fripp, who I took guitar lessons with from 1986-1995. Gloaty Gloaterton signing off.]

Perhaps. However, I think he would have moved into funk or jazz doing stuff like early Funkadelic or "Blow By Blow"-era Jeff Beck.

And Mike, IMO Fripp is kind of in the same league as Mahivishnu John McLaughlin: excellent guitarists who can play damn near anything yet never get the hype that others do.

Very true. I fully cop to being the one who started the "black rock" comparison, because beyond that, there's no reason to compare Hendrix and Prince. Both can easily co-exist.

Ultimately, my take is this...Hendrix is almost certainly the greatest guitarist of all time, that much we can almost all be sure of. I do NOT, however, think his actual INFLUENCE is all that massive. Nobody sounds like Hendrix, anywhere, ever, at all. Now his SPIRITUAL influence is no doubt global (ie-"Man, this is making ME want to play guitar!") and expanisve...but his actual sonic INFLUENCE is, to me, almost nowhere today. It think that's a credit to just how fucking good he was, and how unique his music was. Someone like Prince, however, I can hear in numerous bands and musical acts to this day. But do I think Prince inspired nearly as many people to start playing music themselves as Hendrix has? Hell no.

i heard the story goes, little jimi was thirsty, went to get a soda out of a vending machine that was infront of an accordion store, but he looked across the street at the guitar store and they had pepsi over there and he liked pepsi better, so he got a guitar.
