Let's talk Mets baseball here!

So as of right now the Mets are 2-3. Not the best but it is alright. Karim got hurt and Reyes is still up in the air.

Damn. I hope this isn't a repeat of last year with Floyd. Even though he hit good before his surgery, the dark cloud of injury haunted him all year.

I hope not but the Mets win 3-1 and Looper gets his first Mets save.

Mets go home 3-3 which is better than 2-4.

agreed, and for a team most people thought wouldnt do much...I'm satisfied with the result of the first 6 games...I mean...in a divison right now where it seems there is no clear favorite, (unless philly gets on their horse) I honestly think the mets have a shot.

3-3 is decent, especially since they were all road games. After 25 games, which is often a decent measure of how a team is doing, I'll take 14-11.

tell me what you think about this:

A. Jones was up with bases loaded and 1 out...the braves put a pitcher, Russ Ortiz, on deck...would you walk jones to get to the pitcher?

I think it was a decoy by Cox to get the mets to do just that and then they'd have a pinch hitter such as, oh I dont know, Chipper Jones or Furcal who didn't play in the game

i second the motion... motion carried... John Franco sit the f- down.... Roberts did mess up but he is a liability in the bull pen being he can't pitch back to back days... some medical thing.. he doesn't have enough to be a starter.. so what do you do with him... and i love seeing mike hampton being shelled by the mets.... such joy.... heheee

All I want to see is Franco retire soon. He's a great asset as a member of the Mets, but he is not usefull taking up that roster spot. I think he brings the spirit to the bench, so it'd be nice to see him retire a Met and become part of their coaching staff... weather it be the Major League Mets or a minor league affilliate I don't care as long as he's in the system.

No shit it is early but we have suffered for 3 years now... the team is hitting the ball well and beating the braves.. i am happy with that any time of the season.. If you're not a mets fan that why care about me saying we will be sitting nice in the division.. the mets have out of the race since the beginning of may the last 2 seasons.. so early season success is a good thing...

All I have to say from last night's debacle is F U Art Howe! Tom was crusing then the bullpen fell apart!

We didn't need to play catchup! Nice job Valent though. Looper could have closed that door in the 9th!

How many times now have the bullpen screwed us out of possible victories? 2-3? Ahhhh!

Again screw you Art Howe!

Deat Matt Galante,

I know you're trying to be agressive by sending runners from 2nd to home on a single. But please if you notice your runner has not yet reached third base, it doesnt matter who is playing the outfield, they obviously have a good enough arm to make it to the major leagues. Especially don't send a 35 year old catcher on that type of play. This is a sure fire way to kill an inning. I've now seen you do it at least 5 times already this season, and i'd appreciate it if you would stop. Thank you.

Then why even bother posting here ass?

Anyhoo, how bad is this Mets bullpen?! Roberts throwing 85 mph fastballs, Weathers and Stanton...well...whats better than a former Yankee on the Mets? Franco? Please! I mean I love the guy but what is he now 45? 46? Ober Moreno has some upside but never gets used. Looper is OK...just ok. I wish they would bring up all these high quality minor league relievers sooner, I dont think I can watch the over 40 club we got over there in the bull pen in Franco, Stanton, and Weathers...or the guy with and I quote from Grant Roberts himself "the dead arm".

b) Leiter who is 1-1 with a 1.61 era vs. Peavy who is 1-1 with a 1.86 ERA tonight. Should be very good.
c) Reyes pretty much out for the rest of the season as far as Im concerned (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/nym/news/nym_news.jsp?ymd=20040430&content_id=732843&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp)

The Met's pitching staff is nothing to brag about.
1. Glavine
2. Leiter
3. Traschel
4. Yates
5. Seo
And a horrible closer in Looper

Florida has Beckett, Willis, (these 2 are going to have breakout years: Penny, and Pavano) and Benitez

Philly has Millwood, Wolf, Padilla, and Wagner is closing

As you can see the Mets have a long year ahead of them. Hopefully in a couple of years they can get Kazmir, but they truly screwed it up when they didn't sign/trade for A-Rod, Soriano, and Vlad. (all top 5 players)

Slow down. 3 solid starters in Glavine, Leiter, and Trachsel. And up and coming guy in Yates, the guys just a rookie, I dont understand why everyone is so down on him. And Seo...well hes just a fill in until Erickson comes back and I gotta tell you, for a 5th starter Erickson aint bad. I dont care if their rotation doesnt measure up to the others in their division. Did we forget about the whole rebuiding thing and how theyre going to get better NEXT year when I believe theyll bring up Kazhmir, Peterson, possibly Royce Ring, David Wright...and theyll be willing to spend money!

Looper is a horrible closer?! WTF are you smoking? Im not saying hes a Billy Wagner/ Gagne/ Smoltz caliber closer, but for the most part he gets the job done and so far this season hes been doing good.
If anything is the problem its the bull pen getting to Looper. Roberts, Moreno, Franco, Stanton, Weathers, Wheeler....ugh

As far as your top 5 goes, Bonds, Pujols, Arod, Soriano, and Vlad. I dont believe that Manny is really as good a player as any of those. I didnt say hitter. I said player, as in all around package.

No bob it couldnt have happened. A) Texas wouldnt have traded Soriano unless they got Reyes back. B) If they have Soriano and Arod, where does Matsui fit in? Arod was only willing to switch over to third base because it was the Yankees and logically if they had signed Arod when they had the opportunity, there would be no way they would even be talking about switching his position. And Soriano wouldnt switch his position either...plus if the Mets had Arod, Soriano, and Piazza they wouldnt even consider going after Vlad because of all the money going into those 3 players alone. Theres so many things wrong with what you said Im not even going to touch most of them, but just think about it. It would never have happened...and it never will. All youre doing is taking all the players the Mets missed out on and putting them all together...and thats a very stupid thing to do!

i can't honestly believe you put Benitez in there as an asset... we all know that he can't handle any pressure or else : A, he would still be on the mets B, or yankees..
C, the Mariners
None of those teams wanted him because they know he is garbage..

And as for Philly, they can't get to wanger so what good is he... their bull pen sucks ass....

For the mets to only be 4 games out of 1st place with all the injury problems they have had is a good sign..and we are only 2 games out of 2nd...
Looper is a good closer and is proving himself in the big city... When we get floyd back things should start heating up...

Also there is no timetable for Reyes return. Whatever the fuck happened to Reyes? Obviously two things happened :

a) his injury was more serious than the Mets lead everyone to believe...probably the case because they didn't want to dampen season tickets or partial season tickets or their Sunday package with prospects

b) he wasn't being properly taken care of and evaluated. I heard on the FAN that the Mets wanted him to go to a specific doctor...who usually sends everyone with that problem under the knife...but reyes and his agent wanted to work out the details.

Can anyone honestly believe this would've happened if Reyes was a Yankee? Soriano could have developed the same thing...but the Mets seem to be snake bit.

This is what happens when you have 2 pitchers in your starting rotation. Instead of Leiter taking the mound tonight against the Rocket, the Mets will send out former Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Ginter. For those of you who arent familiar with the fine work of Matt Ginter, he is 3-0 in 63 games (106.2 IP), a 5.82 ERA, 43 BB and 67 SO. All I can say is, Rocket, 8-0.

I was plesantly surprised with Ginters 1st ever start, though be it he allowed 8 hits in 5.2 IP, he only allowed 1 run and struck out 4. And it was great to see Clemens strike out 10 and allow just 2 runs only to see Piazza blast the game tying shot in the 9th...

the author was on ed randall's show this morning, he said gooden didn't want to talk to him because at the time he was with the yankees and probably didn't want his checkered past being brought up and strawberry at the time was in jail. he also said dykstra was pissed about how he came off in the book. i also heard there were a few inaccuracies as far as dates and things like that but that was really chris russo nitpicking.

I didnt even realize they played this afternoon until I saw Sportcenter. They got beat up pretty bad (11-4)...Seo started he gave up 4 in five innings...Weathers allowed 6 runs but only 3 of them were earned...3 errors, Piazza, Matsui (his 9th!), and Zeile.

And just awful news for the Mets and their fans, despite a previous report, Al Leiter has been put on the DL (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/nym/news/nym_news.jsp?ymd=20040520&content_id=748169&vkey=news_nym&fext=.jsp) with Tendonitis in his shoulder. I have been very pleasantly surprised with Tommy this season. Hes made a huge turnaround from last year, and lookie that he pitched a 1 hitter in Shea Stadium no less, where he hates that computer umpire strike/ball thingie. Like Boondock said, the next couple of weeks are extremely important because they are against the 2 top teams in the division and the Mets arent that far back from either one. Having Leiter down, whether it be for just 3 games or more, definitely sucks, but if the offense, which has been pretty fuckin good lately (plus Reyes is scheduled to be back very soon, hes been very good in the minors thus far, but you never know with them) can muster up runs in the Seo, Ginter, and Yates games they have a very good chance of winning at least 7 out of the 12 games.

I think that if we are in 1st or within a few games of first, we have to get either Beltran or at least Magglio to play right. Pitching staff wise, Garcia would make a fantastic #4 guy for us. Reyes...man they fixed his leg so he has to go and injure his back...really starting to wonder that maybe the best thing to have done was to have traded Reyes and a prospect for Soriano...

I checked out the insider stories for you, sorry that I can't copy paste them because of god damn ESPN. It stated that on the Beltran front, the Mets had a scout in Kansas City so the obvious assumption is that there is an interest there. As far as Garcia, they said that Seattle would likely be interested in a package for the Mets' third base prospect Wright. If that is the case, I doubt that deal pans out because Wilpon won't have him traded.

Dunno why you couldnt copy and paste, but heres the story from ESPN.com...

Eye on Beltran

Beltran is one of the top players in the game.
Center fielder Carlos Beltran can become a free agent after the season and is expected to draw interest from several teams -- among them the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox, the Newark Star-Ledger reported. The Royals, who do not want to have Beltran walk away this winter and get nothing in return, also won't trade their marquee player as long as the team remained in contention. But Kansas City is mired in last place in the AL Central and, according to a person familiar with the Royals' plans, general manager Allard Baird has indicated he may be about ready to make a move.

And heres an article from the Tacoma News Tribune, regarding the Mets and Freddy Garcia, its too long to paste on here. (http://www.tribnet.com/sports/story/5114487p-5041050c.html)

Not only that, but we are now also 4 and half back of first and tied with the Braves. Seo vs. Pavano tonight...ugh The lack of run support and the awful bullpen has just killed me these last few games, forget the deadline go after Beltran now before the Yankees do, and go after Garcia, this way its still possible for you to make the playoffs!

I was sure they were going to postpone the game after the 2nd delay, but then there they were. Good game, Phillips going deep again, Looper getting his 8th save, Floyd coming back healthy...Seeing Cameron drive in 2 was pretty cool, guys batting 199 for gods sake.

We are now in 4th place, 1 game behind the Braves, 5.5 games behind the Marlins...

Tommorows game will be Leiter vs. Millwood, that should be very cool.

Yeah it was a good win. I'm just getting a little frustrated with the pulling of Piazza in these close game. I understand he's defense stinks right now but not having him in the lineup is going to come back and bite them sooner or later. I'd rather see them just put him behind the plate late in games and move Phillips to first.

2nd day in a row, Zeile comes through big, this time with 2 homers, including the 250th of his career. Looper with his 10th save despite nearly giving me a heart attack in those 2 at bats vs. Abreu and then Thome. Always good to see the Mets on the winning side of a series sweep. Hopefully this keeps up cause theyre starting a 4 game series against the Marlins tomorrow.

just read a pretty good article and wanted to share. its a little long but worth it.

[quote]
Aging Has Made One Heart Grow Fonder for the Mets
By MICHAEL SHAPIRO
Published: June 6, 2004

I grew up a Yankee fan, if only by default, and I stayed that way for a very long time. The Yankees were the only team in town in 1961 when I became aware of baseball and of loyalties. The Dodgers and the Giants were gone and the Mets were still a year away. I followed the Yankees, even though I grew up in Brooklyn. And I stayed with them. That is, until now. I have become a Mets fan.

I did not plan this. It just happened. I know there are Yankee fans who think me a fool. I have given up the pleasures of October for the uncertainty of August. I have signed on with a loser. But I want to live in the present, not just in anticipation of the future. The Mets will most likely be home in October. I don't care.

I have not become a Yankee hater, as are many of my new compatriots. My allegiances are born of affection, not animosity. I like the Mets - not the recent Alomar-Benitez-Burnitz Mets, but these new jury-rigged, hovering-at-or-near-.500 Mets - because I see qualities in them that speak to me, at age 51, that my once-beloved Yankees lack. Following the Mets is an experience that mirrors life as I have come to see it, although certainly not as I saw life as a child, or as a younger man.

You fall for a team the way you fall in love, or rather the way you fall in love after you have fallen enough times to guard against being impulsive. You do not decide to throw in with a team. Instead, one day you find yourself thinking about the team, and checking the standing, and lingering longer than you may have ever imagined in front of the television to see if it may win. You find yourself caring without being aware of what has been happening. The Yankees may be playing the Red Sox, but I am thinking, "Will we ever see Jos‚ Reyes this season?" We? I am now theirs.

I was spoiled as a child. I entered fandom following Mantle, Berra, Maris and Ford. Life was filled not only with promise, but also with an association with great and enduring strength.

Later, I learned about suffering on tedious summer afternoons watching the likes of Horace Clarke, Jake Gibbs and Dooley Womack. Those years made the championship teams of the late 70's feel like a reward. The Reggie teams also coincided with my late 20's, a time that now seems remarkably free of complications. Not that I was not then filled with worry and doubt about love and success. It's just that I assumed that things would always get better, and that one day they would surely be very good.

The torpor of the late 80's and early 90's gave way to the marvelous team that jelled in 1996 and which, alas, is no more. Derek Jeter is still there, as are Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and the aging Bernie Williams. But as George Steinbrenner tore apart and assembled his new team with men of great reputation and greater wealth, I lost interest. It was as if the season itself was an afterthought. The team felt as if it were created in the model of a heavyweight with a frightening left hook: the six months of the regular season were telescoped into a single moment - the last out of the last game of the World Series. Nothing else seemed to matter because if he was not in the winning clubhouse, weeping from Champagne sting, he would surely declare the season a failure and make a new team.

Which brings me to being 51. When you are young, you think in destinations, in what awaits you. Then you get there and you realize with varying degrees of regret that you wish you might have taken a little more pleasure in the ride. Advising young people to pause and enjoy, however, is as foolish as telling them to be careful in love. They will rush headlong into heartbreak, and there is nothing you can do to stop them.

I once asked a man who followed the Brooklyn Dodgers about the day after the team finally beat the Yankees to win the 1955 World Series. He went to downtown Brooklyn for the p

why in the Holy Hell did Howe pull Ginter in the 8th with 2 outs and nodody on?!??!??

because statboy howe probably noticed that the guy at the plate was 3 for 8 against ginter when they played each other in little league. the guy is obessed with stats and "matchups". its like he almost does it so you won't second guess him. like some obscure numbers are a way to manage a team. i wouldnt be suprised if one of our pitchers was throwing a no hitter in the bottom of the 9th with a 1-0 lead and the other team had a man on first, and the guy at the plate is like 6 for 10 against our pitcher, he'd go to the bullpen.

ginter has been fuckin great this year by the way. at this point, i dont care how much money he is making, mike cameron is a rally killer and has to be sit down. i don't care who we put in center, i'd even settle for super joe mcewing at this point. i say bring up raul gonzalez, he's a fucking monster in MVP 2004 for the tides.
