OK, Wadd...here we go. I didn't want the post to be empty, so even though it's post-whore-ish I'll repeat my little YES rant.
----------------
Sometimes I think the people at the YES Network just don't get it. I purposely took a late lunch so I could get into my car & put on the game at about 12:55pm. Just as I start the car & turn on the radio, I hear Bob Sheppard doing the announcement of the White Sox bullpen coach.
Odd, I thought. Then it hit me, he's announcing EVERYONE...this the how they're going to find the way to announce Don Mattingly. So I frantically grab the cell & call home to ask my brother to throw a tape in & record it (incase tonight's replay doesn't go through the full introductions for the sake of time restraints).
He gets a tape in the VCR just in time as I listen to Donnie get a nice ovation, but Sheppard din't pause for very long and moved on to the next coach, so it didn't last nearly as long as it could/should have. So I ask my bro, "Did you hear the crowd get real loud for that few seconds...that's the only reason they did all these introductions?" He tells me that they are just now coming back from commercials!
I know it's not a big deal, but if the stadium crew knew enough about how important it was to the fans to have Mattingly back in uniform to waste all that time making announcements like it was the All-Star Game or Game 1 of the World Series, shouldn't the Yankees' own cable network have had the same enthusiasm for it?
Anyway...the bleacher creatures wouldn't let it die there. After they went around the horn for the ritual rolecall, they saved A-Rod till the end (or so it would seem), then continued on to a very loud DONN-IE-BASE-BALL! chant.
OK, that's my rant...back to business.

Couldn't have said it better myself. And he was my first pick in my fantasy draft.
I thought it was a nice ovation A-Rod got in his first at bat. And did anyone see Gearge Steinbrenner almost break down and cry today? He was giving an interview to channel 2 in the outfield, and the bleacher creatures all start chanting "Thank you Gearge" over and over and get got all emotional.
All in all, I think a decent start to the season. I am really looking forward to the Boston Series.

what, were you the last guy to pick in a league of 50? how could you make him #1? mussina's got great stuff, and anytime he's on the mound, he's a perfect game waiting to happen. but he's either cursed, or psyched out. no one has come closer to a perfect game/no-hitter than he has and missed more often.
when healthy, brown's the best money pitcher on the team.

I was 11 out of 12. I think this is going to be his year to get 20 wins, or so i thought. Kevin brown is doing great, but I was not sure how great he would have been. Moose will come back around. He just needs a to get comfortable. I think he is still pissed about having to goto Japan.

He'll have a perfect game sometime in the next few years. I think theyre all great (moose, brown and Vaz) thats why i have them all one one of my teams and brown and vaz in the other. But it is nice to see us win close lower scoring games with pitching. 3 great performances from the starters and 2 shit ones. Moosell come around, but we need Contreras to be there with the rest of them. we need 4 starters come play off time

I know it's only been like 6 games into the season, but these guys are driving me crazy! The only one that looks like they want to win over 100 games this year is Posada. A-Rod is like 4 for 27 and doesnt know where he should be standing from play to play at 3rd. Jeter has the ability to become the greatest lead off hitter and he cant get around on a ball. Lofton.....forget this guy. He's a whineing bitch, who I bet saw Bernie look silly in the sun yesterday and says his leg is sore so he wont have to play todays day game.
We have so much talent, I'm just hoping that Torrie can keep them playing as a team.

they said today the top 3 in the order are like 5 for 60 or something like that. This is horseshit. They need to start getting some damn hits. The pitcher today did pitch like shit, but it would not have mattered anyway. Scoring 2 or 3 runs per game is not going to be enough. I am not that worried about A-Rod, i think he is adjusting. But Jeter is a season vet. who should be pulling this team along. He is the captain. Matsui all the sudden forgot how to run the bases. Bernie looks a step to slow in center. I think Lofton should be there to make him happy, and let bernie DH. I do not think he would mind that much, I am sure he will take it better than lofton has. He is to good of a hitter to be on the bench.

As obscene as the pricing is at the ballparks, these are things that will likely never change. The Yanks final offer would have paid Andy more than he's making per year in Houston. But Andy's 'ittle feewings got hurt because George didn't call him personally to make the off due to the fact he was too busy shining the private jet for Kevin Brown to use to take hit cat to the vet & going to dinner with Gary Sheffield & Uncle Gooden. Fuck Andy Pettitte. Oh yeah, then add in the whole Wife finding out about his NY gal on the side & basically forcing his hand (allegedly!).

i dont harbor any resentment towards pettitte either. but based on what we know so far, the yanks made the right move. he wouldnt allow his elbow to be examined by the yankees during the offseason, and it doesnt matter who you are or what you've done, a team who's about to give you a ton of cash has the right to know. sure, the yanks countered the houston offer, but it didnt have enough years attached for andy's liking. andy felt unappreciated, which is kinda true, but baseball's a business. and right about now, the astros got a raw deal.

Not to get off track or anything, but I can't wait till the next time George goes nuts (which I have to assume is after the next head-to-head loss to the Saux), simply for the fact that it'll probably push forward the Kris Benson trade. WHORE!
I've heard that rumor about benson. I'm not sure if he could make it in NY. I look at him like Jeff Weaver. He has played for a crap team the last couple years. He has pitched good for the team. Alot of losses could have had to do with the fact he has no bullpen or Bats. Gets a ton of K's. Still relatively young. This sounds alot like Weavers report before we got him.

As much as I liked Weaver (I'm still taking heat from my Yankees fan buds for my preseason predictions for him last season), if I'm not mistaken he was a mellow California boy. Im retrospect, I can understand why his head became so much of a problem that it overshadowed his great arm.
But Benon is a corn-fed midwestern boy (maybe cheese-fed, he's from Wisc.) who seems to have the kind of personality that has a better chance of working out in NY. Not that constantly arguing with his franchise is the best step to take in NY (should he actually get traded here), but at least he wouldn't be a silent, mopey jackoff like Weaver was after getting knocked around. And I'm sure he's pushing the Pirates for the move as well. If not for the championship opportunities, then probably even moreso because Mrs. Benson wants to be a New York model/actress/whatever. Her & Jumanji Kidd can hang out on the weekends.

He actually reached base safely all 5 at-bats (single, double, 2 walks, & hit by a pitch). But as far as money stats (for the fantasy fan in you), he only recorded one run scored in the whole mess & zero RBI. But the good thing, in pure baseball terms, is that he didn't strand any runners in scoring position.

Best part of the article was what Bernie Williams had said
"I'm just glad that I don't get paid to make those decisions," Bernie Williams was quoted as saying in the New York Post. "He's one of the great pitchers of his generation and it'll be interesting to see where he ends up next year. ... It's hard for me to talk about Pedro, but I think he would want an opportunity to play for a team that wins."
BWhahahah! Wants to play for a team that wins! Meaning the Red SUX cannot do it!

Fuck the Red Sox. I also hope that Sierra is OK. he is hitting awesome in the last week. He was A.L. player of the week last week. And its nice to see A-Rod hitting just to shut people the fuck up. You don't know how many mets fans have said to me in the past month "hey that A-Rod trade was great" Shut up already. The man has proven himself as one of the great hitters of all time. Lets not be ignorant and think he is never going to hit again. he was just adjusting.
Either way, tonights game was great. The new Yanks are finally starting to see what it is like to play for a winning, confident team. They are also getting to see no matter what the score, they have the potential to come back at anytime.

Contreras is really pissing me off. All the bullshit talk about "this guy pitched for the Cuban National team, where if you lost, you might be killed" and all the overdramatizations of how tough he must be. Fuck him...what, did American money turn thid guy into a pussy? Cause since he's been putting our dead presidents in the bank, he's been one unconfident, easily rattled mother'f-er.
The minute he gets into a jam the game grinds to a near standstill & he NEVER seems to pitch himself out of it. He just dominated this same lineup a week ago, but managed to look like dogshit in a better pitchers park last night.
Is Cashman on the phone with David Littlefield yet?
Sierra hopefully will be cool with the hammy cause hes on fire.
They need to come up with a new name for how hot Sierra is with the bat...on fire almost doesn't cut it. You just can't take this guy out fo the lineup right now until he hits about an 0-for-20 skid.
They are also getting to see no matter what the score, they have the potential to come back at anytime.
There's a feeling that's been missing since November of 2001 which I would gladly welcome back.

Sheffield needs to run out ground balls.
That's a little more difficult for him than it is for the average baseball player. Not everyone has to regain their balance & composure from swinging so hard they almost twist themself into the ground & out of their shoes on every pitch. My back hurts just watching him swing on a nightly basis.

Just saw on the news last night that they found a parchment dating back to 1791 in Mass. that asked that baseball not be played close to the town hall or some govt. building like that.
So baseball might have been invented/originated 100 years earlier then Hoboken NJ.
But I quote Len Berman from Channel 4 NBC in NY.
"So it may be that baseball started 100 years earlier in Mass., and they still have'nt gotten it right!"
That is the second time I heard him make a huge rip on the red sox.
The first one was right after the super bowl and the Pat's had won. He pointed out the last rally they had the "Yankees suck" chant was started up.
Berman said "Boston, you could win 10 Super Bowls, they will would not make up for your Red Sox"
LEN BERMAN ROCKS!

Enrique Wilson is the best player on the team right now. He's playing like a fucking ALL STAR lately, and today he's just incredible. 2 for 3 so far, a 2-run homer, and another RBI from a double. And he's performing on both ends. He's had an incredible game defensively as well, with a diving stop and a scoop later that he flipped FROM the glove. This guy is having his best game as a Yankee right now. And considering the ridiculous payroll of this Yankee team, who would've guessed the guy really delivering the winning plays, defensively AND offensively, would be Enrique Wilson. I'm really liking what I'm seeing right now from this guy, and hopefully it'll carry on for the remainder of the season. And this game ain't even over yet.
UPDATE: Just when you thought his game couldn't get much better, another base hit for Wilson, finishing the game 3 for 5, and had another excellent defensive play.

Yea Jeter is looking great this series. The whole team is playing awesome. After tonight, they will be 1/2 game behind Boston for first. Also, Sheffield is starting to really feel comfotable because he is hitting the hell out of the ball. And Matsui is batting around 500 for this road trip and now .313 for the season. Not to shabby.

Jesus, Wilson picks up ANOTHER RBI, Matsui just batted one in... Two more runs, and we'll break our 2001 record of 41 for most runs scored in a 3-game series.
Edit: Make that ONE more run.

no, our problem is we shelled out like 45 billion dollars for Contreas and he's the worst pitcher I've ever seen. tonight he proved yet again that he can't handle New York and that he should never EVER play ahead of class A ball. He needs to go ASAP, I've been saying this for close to 2 years now. It's time the front office woke up and sent him away. Otherwise, they're looking great right now, I love watching Jeter play (minus the 2 errors he had tonight) he's offically out of his slump.

With the victory this makes the Yanks the leader in the Wins collum for all of baseball with 33. They are now the #1 team in MLB. Beating out the Angels who are playing great baseball. It was only a matter of time that those losers in boston realized their place in the baseball universe. That's BEHIND THE YANKS! Yes it will most likely go back and forth all season. But the outcome is inevitible.
I spent my vacation last week with my cousin and her boyfriend is a red sox fan. He takes delight that the sox will win the season series (or so he thinks) and just accepts the fact that the Yanks would win in a playoff series.
How sad or desperate are those fans that they are willing to concede the World Series just so they can say "We beat you in the season series..nyaaa!"
So what? Win all the games you want in the regular season because if you do not make it to the playoffs or advance when you get there it does not mean squat!

When the Yankees go down early in the game, like they did yesterday (5-0) and they did today (4-0), you gotta realize it's only a matter of time before they get back in it. They're making a habit out of getting down early and then coming back. They've done it 22 times so far this season, and hopefully tonight they can do it again. As of now, after Enrique's solo HR, it's 4-3.

*And lemme just say, Enrique Wilson is still impressing me night after night. He gets switched to shortstop to replace Jeter, and RIGHT AWAY he pulls out a FANTASTIC defensive play. This guy should be on the All-Star team, but he's not gonna end up there because the fans vote on it and as a result it's a fuckin' popularity contest. So guys who haven't even played this season like Garciaparra are gonna end up there.
*EDIT: Oh my... God... Kenny Rogers might as well be pitching underhand! ANOTHER solo HR... This time Matsui. 6-4 Yanks.

7th Yankee to do it.
Contreras is officially a bum. The best thing about him each start some Baseball anaylst will come on say this is what he needs to do or has to be done for him. And Contreras goes out there and puts them to rest each time proving how awful he is
Theory 1: He needs the yanks to give him a lead so he's comfortable.....IE, see colorado game yesterday.
Theory 2: He needs to get in front of hitters, not always falling behind....IE, see his last 3 starts. Gets ahead of most batters only to walk them or give up not a single, but a HR.
Theory 3: He just needs to throw his fastball. It has so much movement and by far his best pitch. Nobdy can touch it. IE, See the 5'9 rookie who put it in the bleachers yesterday.

What a game on Sunday! Kenny Lofton coming up big.
Here is a quick point. Keny lofton is a much better hitter than Tony Clark. He is also a quicker center fielder than bernie (who has come up short a few times this year on long fly balls). Anyway, I know everyone talks about Tony Clarks defense and how giambi is a liability at 1b, but its not like he is horrible. If I could choose, I would sit tony clark, lofton would be Cf and leadoff, jeter batting second, arod 3rd, giambi 4, and then bernie as the Dh somewhere in the bottom of the order. This would be the optimal lineup in my eyes.
Bernie is just as much of a liabilty in Center as Giambi is at 1st. I think a ball of bernies head is more extra bases that a passed ball by giambi. Plus with lofton in the lineup, the order is stronger than with clark in there. And Lofton is a threat to steal bases, maybe giving Jeter a chance to see some better pitches.

True. I saw a couple of games down here where he missed fly balls he would have easily gotten to just a few years ago. It's sad to see him starting to lose a step. Bernie's a class act.

Bernie is a class act, and it is sad to see him losing his step. He has been one of my favorite Yankee's for the past 10 years or so. I think Torre also feels bad and still plays him more than he would if he did not have such strong emotional ties to him. Bernie does deserve to get a chance to play, he has earned it over the years. But I think just letting him Dh and occosianally playing center is the better option.

after this SERIES, everything else is anticlimactic. we saw cairo being clutch, arod's incomparable fielding, sheffield exerting his will on the baseball, gordon being untouchable, clark earning his way towards a deserved everyday job, and jeter raising the bar for intangibility AGAIN. this season is effectively OVER for everyone else. this team will not lose.

Seriously, this subway series is so anticlimactic, it just cant top the Sox series. And who else feels that Giambi is gonna be shipped out soon, he's been there for too long and hasn't really shown us anything compared to the way he played in Oakland. Tony Clark has done an amazing job filling in and I for one wouldn't mind if he played everyday. I loved getting him, but I wouldnt care if they showed Giambi the door. I tried for so long to not admit that to myself but I've given in, I'm ready fro Giambi to leave, we just don't NEED him.

But if the yankees lost 2-0 tonight, you could say that. I'll give you the 2 runs due to shotty fielding, but whats mussinas exscuse? Did he pitch last night? No. Awful performance from him... 7-0. He's out now so it can't get any worse, right?

Don't pull out the payroll card OR the Yankee fans don't know what it's like to lose card... I was a fan in the late 80's and early 90's when they were atrocious... not to mention I'm a diehard Knick fan, so I know damn well what losing is like. And guess what. The massive payroll didn't exist for the first 22 Yankee championships, 'cuz beleieve it or not George Steinbrenner wasn't around for all of them. Oh, and in 2003, guess which team had the next highest payroll right behind the Yankees? Oh, that's right, the Mets. There's more involved in winning than just spending money.
Sidenote: Even funnier than the Mets crushing the Yankees tonight... Red Sox fans just don't get a break... The Sox had to play another extra innings game tonight, only to lose 6-3 in the 12th inning.

hmmmmm, let me think, how can I want to ship Giambi out? Well, A) when we signed him he was over a .300 hitter and hasn't yet hit once over that for the Yanks B) He hasnt been healthy for over 2 years, thats a grant hill and ken griffey jr. waiting to happen C) the man has proven he cant handle the pressure of a big market club cause hes choked in NY but not Oakland and finally D) I'd much rather have Tony Clark or Nick Johnson in the line-up cause we already have enough solid bats, offense wins games but defense wins championships.

That'd be true if it weren't false. I was simply noting a terrible call that determined the outcome of the game. I had no complaints yesterday when the Yankees got killed. The Yankees came out flat and the Mets played better, and that was that. Today, on the other hand, was an embarassing moment for Major League Baseball. And I'm not gonna blame yesterday's loss for it, because yesterday's game wasn't even close, but you KNOW Cairo's throw to Clark was in time, so those 3 runs in the 2nd shouldn't have ever happened. I'm just telling it like it is.

How so? Just because its the Yankees? Just because the Yankees are playing that means the umpires arent allowed to make mistakes? Theres plenty of games each year where an umpire makes a bad call, but I guess its only embarassing when the Yankees are playing. Umpires are only human CH, theyre allowed to make mistakes. Plays are replayed many times for the television audience therfore we can see what really happened whereas umpire gets to look at it from one angle, 1 time, and has 1/100 of a second to make a decision. Dont hate the playa, hate the game...

how in the world does getting more bats solve a spotty pitching problem, that makes absolutly zero baseball sense
and as for giambi's stellar stats two years ago its nice he had such an amazing season and then proceeded to drop off .064 the following year to drop his SEASON long average to barely .250 not to mention a deminished on base percentage, slugging percentage, hits, and RBIs. clearly thats the kind of play we need, someone who continues to go nowhere but down.

Okay seriously, there's just nothing else to say... This entire series has been an umpiring debacle. It's a joke.
The rule states: If the ball gets past the fielder before hitting the runner, the runner is not out.
So now it's not even a matter of making a BAD call (i.e. - Cairo's throw to 1st in Game 1, Posada's tie-breaking walk in Game 2) but now it's simply a matter of the umpires throwing rules out the window to favor the Mets.

The league will get a tape of the game, look at the play in question, see that they got the call right & say, "The umps called it right, quit'cher bitching" or see that the umps called it wrong & say. "Ooops, sorry, they fucked up." Only in a case as blatant as the George Brett/Pine tar incident do they ever replay, overturn, or correct a mistake.

oh and only a yankee fan could complain about their hitting with sheffield, jeter, posada and a-rod in their lineup. stop it. seriously. you're only weak spot in your lineup maybe miguel cairo and he's even hitting good this season.
and chicken hawk, two things...while the call yesterday against posada WAS questionable, there is no way you go up there looking for a walk. Thats like the first thing they teach you in little league, protect with two strikes, anything close, swing away. now with that being said, had that game been played at yankee stadium there is no way franco gets that call.
and the way they explained the rule was that the umpire could have said it was the 2nd basemens play to make, especially since piazza had to dive. and if you look at the replay wigginton is right there.
the results were not from bad umpiring, the mets were the better team this weekend. thats all. they came back everytime the yankees led yesterday and it was a great 2 games. as a met fan, i would rather have lost todays game and happily taken sweeps against the marlins and phillies.

Very true Kermit, very true.
while the call yesterday against posada WAS questionable, there is no way you go up there looking for a walk.
Ummm... when the bases are loaded and there's 2 outs and you go up 3-0 in the count, you'd be an absolute moron to swing. The law of probability states that the pitcher is bound to throw a ball in his next 3 pitches, and that law proved true. So unless Jorge saw a pitch that was just irresistably hittable, he wasn't gonna swing. He did the right thing.

no seriously, i dont. ask anybody who knows anything about sports and they will tell you good defense beats a good offense, the same holds true in baseball, good pitching beats good hitting. lots of bats wont do anything when it come to the post season if there is no good pitching. i mean, i know its out of the baseball realm but come on even look at the Lakers/Pistons......defense beats offense, period.

...but the high point for the Yankees will come in October when we're hoisting a trophy and making Boston our bitch like always
yes it is a highlight of our season so far, being we got killed last year by the yankees.. and there is no way you will win the world series with your pitching staff.. not gonna happen...
its fine its a series against the Homo mets. we will win the al by 1mil games and the homo mets will watch us in the World series again
again.. not with your pitching staff....
Ummm... when the bases are loaded and there's 2 outs and you go up 3-0 in the count, you'd be an absolute moron to swing
yes you are right but in a game like that in your rivals stadium you have to protect the plate with a 3-2 count and 2 outs..... if it is close foul it off.... the only way you should be taking on that is if the ball hits the dirt or is above your head....
and for all you yankees fans that are ranting about the best record in baseball.. that means nothing come october or do i need to remind you who won last years world series....

no seriously, i dont. ask anybody who knows anything about sports and they will tell you good defense beats a good offense, the same holds true in baseball, good pitching beats good hitting. lots of bats wont do anything when it come to the post season if there is no good pitching. i mean, i know its out of the baseball realm but come on even look at the Lakers/Pistons......defense beats offense, period.
let me remind you again of recent baseball history. '02 angels had 2 good pitchers in the bullpen, a bunch of mediocre-to-shitty starters, and an UNSTOPPABLE lineup during their playoff run. does that look familiar?
defense and pitching are definitely more important than hitting. but in this case, the yankees have such a potent lineup, that a healthy giambi would make up for their spotty pitching.
the yanks were swept this weekend because of unusually poor starting pitching. but an extra bat in the lineup of giambi's calibre would've easily added a run or 2 per game for the yankees. EASILY.

Yes it was the .562 Florida Marlins... .562: a percentage the Mets will not see this year. But that's besides the point. The point is that this October, when the Yankees are AT LEAST in the playoffs, probably in the World Series, the Mets will be fishing and playing golf. So enjoy this useless sweep while you can. It's not gonna mean anything down the line.

met fans, you got what you've been waiting for for SEVEN YEARS. good for you. it was gonna happen sooner or later. i dont like the circumstances which it happened in, but hey, you got it, great. now just go away like someone who's actually won before, and not keep harping on it like it'll never happen again and you might as well take your shots in now. please. have some dignity. go back to your thread and bitch about whatever the fuck it is you bitch about and leave the yankee bashing to us. k thx bye.

It's hard to put into words how much Mariano Rivera has meant to the Yankees. I myself was guilty of prematurely assumming he was past his prime around the middle of last year, but he's proving that he's as good as ever. He picked up his 30th save of the season tonight, and threw into a double-play and then pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning. Now, if you watched tonight's game, you know the pressure wasn't exactly on for Mariano tonight. But it just got me thinking how much of an AUTOMATIC he's been for sucha long time. With the one exception of WS Game 7, 2001... He's been solid as a ROCK for 8 years. When you bring him in, as he proved against Boston last year in the post season and again in that big game against Boston last week, the guy is virtually unhittable. You bring him in and you can rest assured that the game is safe. In baseball, that's tough to find. He's on pace for a 60-save season, which would set the all time record.

He got into some deep shit tonight, but as usual, he worked his way out and got the save.

Yeeehaw! I'm back from the Stadium... What a great Old Timer's Day! I can't believe Louis Sojo slammed one out of the park in left field to win it. That guy has clutch in his BLOOD. Sojo is so clutch, he hits a walk-off homer to win a game AFTER he's retired. Good to see Mattingly playing again too. And Leyritz can still hit the long ball too.
And the real game was pretty sweet too. I was in the bleachers so I got to say hi to flash gordon and Mo. Jeter was clutch as always. Hopefully that two-run homer will wake A-Rod's bat up. Giambi still sucks. And Mo pitched a 1-2-3 9th. Good day at the ballpark.

El Duke officially makes his return to the Bronx tommorrow against the Devil Rays because Moose is feeling a bit sore from starting on three days rest. It was just decided earlier tonight so it should be somewhat of a surprise for alot of people.

That was really cool to see Thurman Munson's son make the proposal to his girlfriend in front of his Dad's plaque. Contrary to popular belief I was a wee little yankee's fan in my early days cause we had WPIX down here in PA and I watched the games. All I remember was the highlights I would see of Munson during rain delays and always had this fascination with his catching and how he played (at least from what I saw).

Don't get too high on El Duque....hopefully he can contribute, but remember why they let him go. He was getting his ass kicked, still nobody knows how old he actually is....he's also coming back from an injury. I hope he does well, but he's probably not the answer.

great job with the first half of the season. nice to go into the break with a 4 game sweep and I think El Duque pitched a very good game. Hopefully after the break Brown and Moose are healthy and we can send Contreras back to the bullpen. anyway, lets enjoy the break and get ready for the second half of the season.

And not to mention he's doing all this with the burning of a thousand suns in his left shoulder every time he swings the bat.
