5 hits, 5 homeruns.

Solid.

And the Sox got smashed, so the lead is back up to 8 games.

Not so much a concern... More of a novelty. A treat, if you will... Icing on the cake. It's just nice to be able to say your team has the best record in baseball.

But at this point it almost is a concern, considering how they lost this title of "Best Team In Baseball"... The Cards weren't even CLOSE to them. In fact, NO team was. The Yanks dominated the majors by several games. But now half their pitching staff is still on the DL, and the Yankees have played .500 baseball since that sweep of the Red Sox. I consider it a slump, in Yankee terms.

they are most definatly in a "slump" in Yankee terminology, but now watching them over the course of the season we know how good this team really is and what they are truly capable of. It's still only July, there's two more whole months before this season ends. things will come around again.

Is anyone watching this game? I'm listening on MLB.com to Sterling & Steiner, and by their description, the ump is calling a god-awful game. Normally, I wouldn't listen to anything Charlie Steiner says, especially after listening to him call Derek Jeter by the name of Sean or something like that in his first season (I don't remember exactly what he said, but it wasn't Derek, or even Gary which would have been slightly more understandable, it was just way off).

Seem like just about every Yankee has been arguing balls & strikes. I'm waiting for one of them, or Joe if this goes on much longer, to get tossed.

Anyone have a visual to go with all this bitching?

What a game. I was able to watch most of it from my parents house while I was at lunch. Pitchers duel all the way.
And Mike Kay called it. Said the all the Yanks needed to win was one swing of the bat.
Gotta love this team.
Oh yea...the Sux lost today too. (laughs to himself)
So much for the great white hope up in Boston.

I just don't see how this could happen. The Yanks apparently don't have the prospects, they don't have anyone of value on the roster without an enormous contract, and Arizona's owner still hates George. Not to mention how sick to my stomach this will make me to see that ugly fuck in pinstripes...but I don't think my opinion matter much anymore, at least since the restraining order from Mr. Cashman's office.

Since Boston doesn't seem to be in the mix anymore, and the Angels don't want to pick up the big paycheck, I hope he just rots in the desert.

Crippler, your NEVER NEVER NEVER reference was none other than genius! I am so glad someone remembers that film.
Glad someone other than myself got a smile out of that...thanks, fluff!

Wow, does this bullpen need some serious relief. The starters need to get back & pitch like they were expected to pitch for the rest of the year, and the youngsters like Procter (anyone else laugh & think about Police Academy everytime he comes into a game? No, just me...ok), Padilla, and even Sturtze need to eat some fucking innings. And with as many games as they have left with Toronto, Baltimore, and Tampa (27 out of 64, with some Cleveland, KC, & Seattle sprinkled in too), they should be able to get that done.

*edit*

Also, someone please help me answer a baseball question/settle an argument.

In last night's game, Mo blew the save. The Yanks came back in the top of the next inning and Scott Proctor was warming in the bullpen between innings. If Proctor had come into the game to start the next inning & closed it out successfully, how would the pitching stats have been decided:

(a) Rivera gets the win, Proctor gets the save.
(b) Proctor gets the win, no save awarded.
(c) This is one of those stupid situations where they allow the official scorer to decide.

I argued for (b) because Mo left the game in a tie & shouldn't be able to get a win unless he recorded at least one out once the Yanks had the lead. But, I admit to not being totally convinced of my answer's validity, in this rare case. My cousin argued answer (a).

Any thoughts, facts, opinions?

That's what a 70-year old coach deserves when he attacks a 32-year old player.

As far as I'm concerned the that was a just reward for the overrated Zimmmer who choked twice as a manager: with the Sox in '78 and with the Cubs in '89.

I know he sucks but they have no choice but to put him in. Quantril has ben in 55 games so far this year. they can not keep doing that to these guys. the starters to do go long enough. Look at least night, El Duque was out after 2. that means 7 innings of relief for the pen. that is not cool at all. he does suck, but he does take the stress off someone else, even if it is for an inning.

There's no point in bringing in a lefty reliever to get a lefty batter out if HE NEVER does. I'd rather just bring in a righty like a Prinz or a Padilla and roll the dice. It's better than putting in Heredia, who has basically become an AUTOMATIC run for the opposition.

I've also heard Olerud, because he was given an outright release this season too. I don't think there's a huge difference between the two, but I would still want Tony Clark starting. The only way someone takes over the starting job from Tony is if they can somehow pull off a deal with Tampa for Tino, which even though it sounds like a pipedream, wouldn't be so far fetched if the Tampa owner didn't hate George.

I agree that Tony has done a better-than-could-be-expected job playing first base this year, but let's not forget he's hitting .237. He may have had his fair share of "big hits" this year, but they're just about the only one's he's got overall. But, even with that info, we don't need another big bat in the lineup. But if Giambi is totally unavailable, Enrique Wilson is the only infield back-up on the bench.

hey frontrunner, i'll refresh your memory again, which means you'll forget something else from '02 and stop rooting for those teams. i said a healthy giambi will add more runs(which he does), and give the poor pitching a bit more breathing room. that doesnt equate a cure to all their problems.

Lately is 2 years now, hanging on to your '02 stats are fine, but hanging on to somebody for nostaglic reasons or what they did 2 years ago doesn't make somebody neccessarily worth it. Shane Spencer had a terrific October once, he didn't really pan out. And don't be retarded, I don't hate on him for not being 100% health wise, I don't even hate on him in general. I simply don't think he's worth the money we spent on him (neither is Contrearas) and for that reason alone I wouldn't mind him being shipped out in favor of another arm or middle relief.

so you say you dont hate him for not being healthy? but yet you hate him for not having a high avg, which you cant even bother looking up. his low avg is a direct result of his poor health. so yes, you are down on the guy for not being healthy.

dont start talking about what someone's worth. they're worth what they can get at the time. is jeter worth $189 million? as for trading giambi for middle relief, i'm glad you're on the bandwagon and not the front office. middle fuckin relief. christ.

A-Rod is finally being A-Rod... He's been good all year, with the exception of a few slumps on and off, but the last week or so, he's really finally kicked it into full gear. He's looking like the A-Rod that can rightfully be called the best player in baseball. His transfer to 3rd base has been BEYOND expectation, and it's clear that that's his place on the field. He hit his 28th HR today and is tied for the most HR's in the AL. He's finally gone on that "TEAR" that everyone's been warning about for weeks.

And Jeter's been playing well lately too, he picked up 3 hits today.

With Jeter, A-Rod, and Sheffield playing on all cylinders, this team is an offensive NIGHTMARE to ANY pitching staff.

A-Rod has been hitting homers, then going 0-4 in the other at bats for the night. he was 1-5 today with the homer. I am not sure about yesterday. He is still "only" batting .284. I think he is doing awesome, but still not playing to his full potential. for all i care he can save it to the playoffs and carry the team on his back. Him and Jeter will be awesome to watch in the post season.

The pitching has been looking more promising as well. El Duque looks good, Brown looked decent in his last start. I can't wait to see this new guy pitch. I hope Mussina comes back soon and when he does, i hope he pitches like he used to, not like he did in the begining of this year.

They need a big off season of getting some pitchers.

How hard is it to aquire tickets to a Yankee game?

and

Anyone have any extra on hand for an upcoming game that you wouldn't mind selling to a schlub from Philly who wants to go?

Go read some stories about Bob Murphy. Met and Yankee fans listened to him. Why? Because he never made the game about him, it was always about the game. Sterling is obnoxious and spent years and years trying out different home run calls, finaling settling on that stupid " it is high, it is far...." thing he does. Assuming someone like the BoSox doesn't try to block this from happening, where's he going to play? I don't remember him ever playing CF, and he's certainly not taking RF from Sheff, or LF from Matsui. And I don't really like the idea of Matsui in center everyday with Larry & Sheff in the corners.

If they're going to add any everyday player (even though the bullpen should still be the main concern), the only thing you need is a leadoff-type player, but more importantly one who can genuinely cover CF. Bernie & Kenny have been awful this year and both of them have the arms of 12 year old girls.

A QUALITY outting for Kevin Brown today. 8 innings of shutout ball. I don't know why Torre didn't just let him finish. The bullpen needed rest. BUt whatever. Looks like Brown is back in full form and the Yankees finally have an official Ace again.

And how about Olerud? 2 games as a Yankee and the guy's had 5 hits and reached base 7 times. I think he's got something like 4 RBI's too. A pleasant surprise.

I just read that link on Walker... what the hell? What reason would the Yankees have to go out and get an outfielder? Bernie/Lofton are doing fine in Center. And Matsui and Sheffield are nothing short of All-Stars in their positions. Where is there room on the Yankees for another outfielder?

(I forgot to post this sooner but...) this past Monday 2 AUG marked the 25th anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson. I can't believe it's been 25 years. I still remember that day -- my brother and I were playing whiffle ball on the front lawn at my grandmother's house when she ran outside to tell us the news. I also remember the crowd at Yankee Stadium doing a "Thur-man, Thur-man" chant for at least 20 minutes and there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Rest in peace Thurman.

Yanks' Munson not forgotten (http://lists.mlb.com/u/566315/12353005)

I echo the sentiments on Thurman Munson. I spent some time on Thurman Munson's Tribute Site (http://www.thurmanmunson.com) last night and refreshed my memory. What a shame. Nothing I like more than a tough gritty balls out catcher.

On that Larry Walker point, he did used to play first base correct? Maybe as a back-up and an extra bat off the bench perhaps? If he is to clear waivers who is to say that someone else won't pick him up first? I am a bit unclear on how waivers work but don't the worst teams get the first shot?

Contrera's finally gets a win against Boston. Just not as a pitcher for the Yanks. He was far from Dominant, Boston just finds ways to lose.

Anyway Yanks are playing Seattle tonigth and winning 10-2 in the 8th. They are looking good, including the pitching. Leiber in doing well and El Duque is awesome so far. Mussina comes back next week and they may not even have a spot for him! I hope he pitches well. Maybe they will use a 6 man rotation to save some arms for the post season. Has that ever been done before?

Thats what I would think. Maybe carry Leiber and Loaizia as backup's for some bad starts? they know they can dig out of a hole, they have done it all year. Maybe if the starters give up 3 or 4 in the first inning or 2, pull them and put one of the other 2 guys in.

what is the number of players you can take into the playoffs?

While the fact that they've lost 6 of 7 and dropped their lead from 10.5 to 5.5 in just one week does make me a little uneasy, we should not forget (just like AJ mentioned) the Red Sox still have to play September. Read that one more time, the Red Sox still have to play September.......they'll no doubt go 3-27 for the month and lose the AL East to the Yanks by like 20 games. However, the rest of the wild cards will also go 3-27 and the BoSox will take the wild card by 1 game. Did anybody see what happened to Manny last night late in the game, he just simply fell down while watching a fly ball and botched an easy out, almost giving Chicago the game. Had they been playing a decent team, Boston would have lost based on that play. Just wait till September, there will be many more of those Manny-esque plays from the Sox.

Holy shit...I haven't seen calls that bad since the last out of the 1997 World Series. Lofton struck out on a pitch that might LITERALLY have been a foot outside. The catcher framed it nicely, but by habit he moved his hand about 8 inches & stopped...and the F'n pitch WAS STILL OFF THE PLATE BY 3-4 INCHES! Gagne's last pitch in the Yanks/LA series was closer.

And the inning only got worse from there. It's no excuse for how they couldn't get a runner home all night, nor is it an excuse for using Gordon again & him having nothing in the tank. It's just plain AWFUL umpiring.

Here's the thing about Sheffield being in contention for MVP.

He doesn't get the "love" that other players get. Nobody sees the intangibles that Sheffield delivers, other than Yankee fans. And the problem is, the baseball writers HATE the Yankees. Everyone HATES the Yankees except for Yankee fans.

I mean, outside of the stolen bases, Sheff and A-Rod's stats are nearly the same (ok, Sheff has a higher average) but Sheff puts a fear into opposing teams that A-Rod simply doesn't right now.

(That's not to say nobody fears A-Rod... thirty homers isn't nothing to sneeze at, but there's definitely a different vibe when Sheff is at the plate)

He's definitely the Yankees MVP. No one has been responsible for more big wins this year than he has. But AL MVP? Won't happen.

And the problem is, the baseball writers HATE the Yankees.
Not to mention, he hadn't made a lot of friends in the baseball community before putting on the pinstripes. Lots of people flat out hate Sheffield. And I'm embarrassed to admit that I was certainly one of them before this season.

I, like a lot of baseball fans/writers/analysts, etc. never forgot the shit he pulled to get out of Milwaukee, the BS with refusing to shave in LA, etc. Then the talks almost break down this winter/spring in his contract negotiations over what was said to be something like a $1 million difference in what he was looking for. I thought, oh Christ he's going to be a cancer. He wasn't exactly a loveable guy.

But I must admit he wasn't dumb enough to even think about coming into Yankee Stadium with a goatee and has shut his mouth and flat out produced.and produced in the clutch.

I've never been one to flip-flop on the players I like & don't like. I never liked Roger Clemens, including when he was winning playoff games for the Yanks. And I still giggle when I see Charlie Hayes catching the last out of the '96 World Series with Boggs watching from the bench (Boggs never was an asshole, just another stinking Red Sock). And beyond the Yankees/Red angle, I still wish for Barry Bonds to blow out his knee during his home run trot weekly.

But how can a Yankees fan not love the way Gary Sheffield has played for the Yankees this year?! He's done so in pain and still been nothing short of the consummate teammate and clutch performer. He's one of the few players in all of sport that has completely changed my image of him, and in less than one full season.

Unfortunately, being a dick in his earlier career, combined with being a Yankee, will guarantee he doesn't get enough votes to be MVP. But he'll be the Yankee MVP barring an unkind act of God or Cortisone.

18-6...

Sheffield has a double and a triple in this inning (9th).
Every player has a hit.
Ruben got his 300th homer on a grand slam.
Tony Clark has 3 homeruns in the game.
A-Rod's got one.
Jeter's got one.
They've batted around the order.

...and the inning's not even over yet.

This is the most ridiculous display of hitting power I've ever seen in baseball.

GAME DAY RECAP Friday, September 03

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown broke his non-throwing hand punching a clubhouse wall in frustration during the New York's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

The pitching-weak Yankees, whose AL East lead over second-place Boston was cut to 2« games, did not immediately know how long the right-hander would be sidelined.

Brown will be fine. It's his non-throwing hand, and it's a self-inflicted wound, so it can't be more than a fracture. All we lose from this injury is his already non-existent defense. Wrap it up and put a glove over it and he won't miss more than 3 starts.

The first game was originally scheduled for 1pm and than was pushed back to 3pm. Devil Rays have not even gotten to the airport yet. They had chances on Friday to leave with the Tigers and a chance on Saturday to leave and they did not.

With Selig on Boston's payroll, I could [retty much bet that if they were scheduled to play Boston today, Devil Rays would have had to forfeit. This is bullshit and the league knows it.

TW, I dragged this over here for further discussion.

How does this whole forfeit thing work anyways. I heard something last night on SportsCenter about how the Devil Rays and the Yankees each would be given a 9 - 0 win for Tampa bay being not able to make it.

I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with Selig and it would have happened no matter which teams were involved. It is a Hurricane for goodness sakes and you can't help that.

I found this on the MLB.com site:

The Devil Rays, citing their desire to be home with their families as Hurricane Frances hit beginning Saturday, remained in the Tampa Bay area rather than heading to New York after their weekend games against Detroit were postponed.

The team was scheduled to fly to New York on Monday morning, but their departure was delayed until Monday afternoon.

Requote:

They had chances on Friday to leave with the Tigers and a chance on Saturday to leave and they did not.

They had a chance to leave on Friday or Saturday but couldn't you blame the team for wanting to be close with their families during this time of crisis? Baseball should be the furthest things from their minds.

Yeah...Mo looked human again...that part has nothing to do with Lofton. But just once I would like to see someone pick him up when he has an off night with a nice defensive play in the outfield. If Lofton runs to the ball, it's not even a spectacular play, just barely above routine.

Oh and just for the record, you can try and pawn this loss off on Lowe being so horrible for the Red Sox all you want. In his last seven starts since Aug. 11 his Earned Runs have gone 1,3,5,3,3,1,2. That's one, count it, one bad start for him. And so far in September he's had an era of 2.61. Did he have a good game? No absolutely not, but let's not get ahead of ourselves when he's played the way he has.

yea and before that, his era was like 6. he had a shitty year, got hot for a month, and is goin back to being shitty again, right in time for october.

he sucks, and ive wanted him out of our rotation since march

You can say he got hot, but if it weren't for him playing the way he did you can be assured that the Red Sox wouldn't break into the streak that got them into the race to begin with.

the point is taken about him helping them comeback, but did you see him pitch the first half of the year, HE BLEW

he started like 2-5 with an ERA over 6 and didnt get it into the 5's until july. thats bad, he should be back in the bullpen.

maybe we can trade him to the Wilpons for David Wright and if we throw in some injured guy, can get their best remaining prospect

Mets were actually interested in him early on but they backed off. From what I understand the Tigers are considering picking him up in the offseason. Boston really fucked up, San Diego offered them Lawrence early in the season for Lowe and Theo declined and instead asked for Eaton which they had no chance of getting. Lawrence's 28 and he isn't having a bad season at all, Eras somewhere under 4 I believe.

Mussina is pitching awesome the last 3 starts. Lets hope all of this good pitching continues into the post season.

If not for the shitty loss on friday night, it would have been a dominating sweep

I respect a few Red sox players to a cerain extent. Varitek is one of them. I feel like most of the time, Tek is a pretty respectable guy who does everything he can to lead his team to victory. Pretty much Boston's version of Jeter. At the same time, however, guys like like Damon, Schilling, and most of all Millar are in my eyes complete jokes. I follow NY so obviously I read the papers and everything else, I can confidently say I have never heard so much as one Yankee make a comment calling out Boston. At the same time though you have guys like Kevin Millar who printed out T Shirts with a slogan along the lines of "We're coming for you, and hells coming with us, Cowboy Up" before this series. Then proceeded to publicize the fact to the Boston papers. Damon's another guy who also repeatedly enjoys calling out the Yankees and how Boston's the better team. I've already heard this guy complain several times this year about how other teams weren't playing their best against the Yankees just because of they had the undeserved image of a great team.

Well now, I want to know what all of these guys are going to say following this series. Obviously it would be really easy to simply say something along the lines of , " We had a bad series, we'll be back etc. etc. etc." But the problem I have is that if you have the audacity to call out a team for a month and repeatedly threaten them about an upcoming series, you should also have to answer some serious questions. Like how does it feel to blab about your greatness to have this outcome. Of course they won't.

These games are always so damn entertaining. Tomorrow now means virtually nothing, but I can't wait for Sunday: Schilling pitching for Cy Young consideration & the Yanks playing to break any remaining spirit the Saux have left.

I don't know if anyone heard any of the post game comments, but all of a sudden this Boston team's alot different than the guys who printed up Cowboy Up T Shirts and made comments like "Wake up the De Bambino and Ill drill him in de ass."

Here are some post game sox quotes that simply equate to pure hilliarity.

"We're not going to catch the Yankees," said the Red Sox' Manny Ramirez. "You're never going to catch those guys. You've got to give those guys the respect they deserve."

NESN Interviewed Pedro after the game, and NESN asked
"Pedro do you want to face the yankees again in playoffs to get back at them?
Pedro :" NO i just want them to Fucking Disappear"..

But ladies and gentlemen the number one quote by my man Pedro that I believe now dethrones the beaming of de big bambino,
"What can I say -- just tip my hat and call the Yankees my daddies ," "I can't find a way to beat them at this point. ... They're that good. They're that hot right now -- at least against me. I wish they would disappear and not come back.

"Call De Yankees My Daddies"

Those are some of the greatest quotes I have ever heard, they make so happy. Fuck Manny, fuck Pedro, and most of all fuck the Sox. Cowboy Up you little bitches!
