While doing my taxes, I played all 3 discs of the "Clash on Broadway" compilation...
And rocked my nuts off!
The singer can't sing
the drummer knows only 3 beats
the guitarist knows less coards(sorry...in a hurry) than me, and I barely play.
the bassist beats his instrument, like it owes him money.
Yet almost every tune is golden!
Play "Janie Jones" now, and tell me I'm wrong.
Please explain.

Why did you have enough time to type a mini-sentence explaining how you mispelled "chords," but DIDN'T have enough time to just hit the "Backspace" button five times and re-type it?

I Guess I'm mildly retarded.
BTW did y'all listen to "Janie Jones"??
I never could spell chord, or sincerely. I guess it's a mental block.

Janie Jones
Written by Joe Strummer/Mick Jones
HE'S IN LOVE WITH ROCK'N'ROLL WOAAHH
HE'S IN LOVE WITH GETTIN' STONED WOAAHH
HE'S IN LOVE WITH JANIE JONES
BUT HE DON'T LIKE HIS BORING JOB, NO...
AN' HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S GOT TO DO
SO HE KNOWS HE'S GONNA HAVE FUN WITH YOU
YOU LUCKY LADY!
AN' HE KNOWS WHEN THE EVENING COMES
WHEN HIS JOB IS DONE HE'LL BE OVER IN HIS CAR FOR YOU
AN' IN THE IN-TRAY LOTS OF WORK
BUT THE BOSS AT THE FIRM ALWAYS THINKS HE SHIRKS
BUT HE'S JUST LIKE EVERYONE, HE'S GOT A FORD CORTINA
THAT JUST WON'T RUN WITHOUT FUEL
FILL HER UP, JACKO!
AN' THE INVOICE, IT DON'T QUITE FIT,
THERE'S NO PAYOLA IN HIS ALPHABETICAL FILE
THIS TIME HE'S GONNA REALLY TELL THE BOSS
GONNA REALLY LET HIM KNOW EXACTLY HOW HE FEELS
IT'S PRETTY BAD!
LET THEM KNOW - HOW YOU FEEL

backstage after an Asbury Park Big Audio Dynamite Gig; he stayed until each and every single person who waited got whatever they wanted signed. sat with him for 20 minutes as he signed shit and told clash stories i only wish i can begin to remember; except stories of Joe Strummer playing Pinball. I told him I had only seen the Clash when they opened for The Who at the Shea Stadium 1982 Stand; called, yes, Who's "Farewell Tour".
Seeing the clash at Shea Stadium is an event I will not forget; especially the jack hammer chords that opend the show...
RRRRRhhhut!!!! Rhhuttt!!! Rhhhuutt!!!! Rhuuuttt!!!!
and then the bass kicked in and people screaming London Calling and holy shit what a show.
i lucked out and met a lotta people in a lotta bands when i worked at the pony. being next to this guy; you could feel the history radiating; holy shit what they did.
Oh; and the first B.A.D. album? Fucking brilliant...
SANDINISTA!!

It's because there The Clash man! There doesn't have to be a reason. They perfected punk. When you look back on the history of punk, who do you think of? The Ramones, Sex Pistols(although I never got into them), and The Clash!
Rudy Can't Fail was the first Clash song I ever heard. I guess that song holds a special place in my heart.

I may have posted this before, but goddamn it, i'm going to post it again.
Just after Joe died, I saw two bands cover the White Riot within the same week. The bands were at complete opposite ends of the spectrum. The first was the Casulties--mohawked, pink and green hair, punk as fuck--covering the song about twice as fast as the original. The second was Camper Van Beethoven--instrumental, California, sarcastic, borderline hippy--covering the song at about 1/3 of the speed.
If that doesn't speak to how influential the Clash is, I don't know what will.
The song Ghetto Defendent from the Third disk is probably my favorite song at the moment.

Thanks Monsterone!
I hate the public so much! If only they'd elect me. I'd make 'em pay! Aw, Moe, how do I make 'em like me?

Is it a sign of the apocalypse when I agree with a KeithyBoBeefy post? (except for the Sex Pistols part.)

Mizzle - I saw Big Audio Dynamite at Irving Plaza back in the day (I even remember it being broadcast live on WLIR) and they totally owned.

This March, PBS stations nationwide will premiere The Clash Live: Revolution Rock, a new documentary film chronicling live performances from the iconic punk pioneers at the peak of their powers.

The Clash was one of those bands you either "got" or you didn't. If you didn't "get" them then that's it. No more or less. It's just not for you. But if you were one of the ones that felt it in your soul, felt it in your heartbeat, then it ALL just seems to make a bit more sense. I was really devastated when Joe died. I had a chance to see him with the Mescaleros a few months prior and didn't take it. I am much the poorer for it. The Clash is that soundtrack of your life, when you look back and try to make some sense of it all. You can measure your ups and downs in songs, you can mark events in your life album to album. Really life changing stuff.
saw the clash and black uhuru when the clash were touring for the combat rock album
great show
i've always had a soft spot for this song
White Man In Hammersmith Palais
The Clash
Midnight to six man
For the first time from Jamaica
Dillinger and Leroy Smart
Delroy Wilson, your cool operator
Ken Boothe for UK pop reggae
With backing bands sound systems
And if they've got anything to say
There's many black ears here to listen
But it was Four Tops all night with encores from stage right
Charging from the bass knives to the treble
But onstage they ain't got no roots rock rebel
Onstage they ain't got no...roots rock rebel
Dress back jump back this is a bluebeat attack
'Cos it won't get you anywhere
Fooling with your guns
The British Army is waiting out there
An' it weighs fifteen hundred tons
White youth, black youth
Better find another solution
Why not phone up Robin Hood
And ask him for some wealth distribution
Punk Rockers in the UK
They won't notice anyway
They're all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting
The new groups are not concerned
With what there is to be learned
They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny
Turning rebellion into money
All over people changing their votes
Along with their overcoats
If Adolf Hitler flew in today
They'd send a limousine anyway
I'm the all night drug-prowling wolf
Who looks so sick in the sun
I'm the white man in the Palais
Just lookin' for fun
I'm only
Looking for fun
Oh please mister just leave me alone
i'm only looking for fun

Togo back to the original question in this thread, just listen to london calling, and sandanista. The clash were able to experiment with various types of music and succeed at it.
