I was split on whether to go politics or entertainment, but I chose the former.

Seems WLIB here in NY has gone from Caribbean music to talk radio as of noon today, with commentary by such luminaries as Al Franken and Janine Garofalo.

Personally, I rarely post my political opinions here (and am not going to do so now), but I plan to give it a listen on my home home tonight and see what the deal is with Leftist Radio.

Right now, the homepage just lists stations (no DC), but it's http://www.airamericaradio.com/

I'd be curious to hear Franken. He was hilarious on Stern.

Not so much Garofalo. There is only so much dog and cat talk I could take.

Where I differ greatly with his politics, I can appreciate Franken's talent and intelligent humor.

However with Garafolo, I've seen her interviewed on political topics and she is grating and unfunny. But then again, so is her stand up act.

Yeah, unlike James, I find myself frequently agreeing with alot of what Franken has to say, but the Garafalo comment is on the money. There's almost a shrewish, embittered quality to her stuff, standup or political, that makes it so fucking distasteful to watch or hear.

Incidentally, I caught a few minutes of Franken on Stern the other day, and I thought apart from being entertaining as hell, he sounds damn good on the radio.

on paper, i like the lineups on air america ....

loved sue ellicott on NPR, and always found marc maron fairly funny ....

lizz winstead and chuck d could be the new mason & kolinski

teaming franken with an npr veteran might work

i had read that the garafolo show would feature other artists (perfomances/interviews) that could work

it's all relative .... but for all the crap that constitutes ny radio, hopefully it won't be that bad

I just wished Franken would have been as good on Ron and Fez as he had been on Stern, but hey...they can lay claim that they helped get his radio career going! haha!

No, not on in Washington, and odds are it won't be. No stations to go to.

The entire line-up IS on "XM Radio," which really might be the way of the future for local hosts looking to go national.

Personally, I can't stand political radio that tilts too far to one side or the other, and I HATE, HATE, HATE the "point/counterpoint" where the two sides are so far apart, and they feel the need to yell and scream to get their points across. I can just seen Buckley shaking his head in shame at this new crop of GOP babblers.

I appreciate what R&F do; when they do get political, they do tend to go towards the left, however they still are not concerned about bashing the Liberals or Democrats when they need it. I really wish we had more of that in this country - too much of the histrionics from both sides.

Ehh. I thought Lateline was hysterical, but politics and comedy generally do not mix. Lewis Black actually pulls it off pretty well because part of you is laughing at his future heart problems. Plus, I don't think Franken's humor will translate well to radio, but I'll definitely give it a go.

In his book, I thought Supply-side Jesus was funny, even if its arguments were flawed. Also, the part where he called up that guy and challenges him to a fight. Funny dialogue between him and his son.

bill hicks, daily show, 90s dennis miller, bill mahr, the onion and michael moore seem to be able to pull it off ....

at first i was all for the network .... but after listening to rhandi rhodes' (who's just a poorman's lynn samuals) interview with nader, she just came off as a screaming twit - no better than hannity or savage

it seems that the focus of this network is to derail any chance of bush getting re-elected, not entertaining/informing the masses with a left of center viewpoint

a liberal radio network cannot be a voice for the DNC, i realize the need to conteract GOP's mouthpieces .... but endless hours of bush sux, is just as bad as clinton sux

the public will now be further squeezed in from the left and right and forced to choose between two parties endosed and biasly championed by like-minded media outlets

nonsense

I really enjoyed the O'Franken factor, and this is from somebody who really didn't find him funny before. As for Garofalo, I've been listening for a couple of minutes, and she's already pissing me off, not making me laugh. The only reason I'm going to continue is to hear Chappelle, and then I'm off forever.

Don't look for it to show up on D.C. radio anytime soon.....they're only able to run this programming on stations that they buy first. So you'll have to wait until someone ponies up the cash to buy a station here. Maybe Al Gore, he apparently has enough cash to buy a tv channel.

However with Garafolo, I've seen her interviewed on political topics and she is grating and unfunny.

I've switched from listening exclusively to Rush/Sean/Bill/Bob Grant/Laura Ingram/all those folks (well except Dr. Joy Brown, she's not one of those folks) on the to and from the drive to work to splitting time Air America.... I like Franken's show; the comedy bits don't really work, but I find a lot of his delivery to be similar to Ron's when he's commenting on political stuff (e.g. the whole "I don't know... maybe it's just me..." line etc.) and that makes me feel nostalgic and almost a little warm and fuzzy...

I also like his conservative friend they have on all the time, trying to explain the ridiculous Rush clips.

http://www.drudgereport.com/siren.gif

After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious cash-flow problems.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE, on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said, the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million! A charge the network strongly denies... Developing...

I don't know if the story that was on Drudges website is true or not, but I believe Air America is a viable network. It's not only broadcast on radio, but it is also on XM and now Sirius.

I'm not much for one sided broadcasting one way or another. I think if they can add more hosts and more points of view to the network it can be force in talk radio.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is planning to report in fresh editions: The company also failed to make its scheduled payroll, leaving its staff roughly 100 radio personalities, writers, and producers unpaid until Thursday.

Last week, according to two sources familiar with the matter, paychecks to some of the network's talent--a group that includes Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo, and Randi Rhodes--bounced, and Rhodes joked on the air about not being paid.

The difference, IMO, is that Hannity and Limbaugh actually are willing to challenge the President on issues like immigration. Air America, on the other hand is not a liberal radio network. It is the Democratic radio network.

For all of Franken's accusations of Fox News being a shill for the administration, he has turned around and led a radio network which is, in turn, a shill for the Kerry campaign.

Just because he admitted it, doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite. Fox News also admits that they are a conservative-leaning network. This is from Lefty McLefterson AKA Ted Rall's blog (talking about Air America):
Finally, the editorial content is mushy. A few days ago, I heard Franken try to defend John Kerry on charges of waffling. Look, Kerry IS a waffler. It goes back to Vietnam, when he tried to be a war hero AND a peacenik, a game he's still playing. My old program director David Hall, who has forgotten more about talk radio than I'll ever know, used to harp on credibility. A host without credibility won't be listened to. Anyone who tries to defend Kerry as a man of integrity is kidding himself but nobody else.

I strongly disagree. Each has, if nothing else, the ability to sharpen the BS detectors of everyone who will listen to them with a critical ear. Rabble-rousing press and the free exchange of (sometimes silly, bad, or simply wrong) ideas is one of the most important American traditions IMHO.
