WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Planning a May wedding in the eastern United States? Take the party indoors to avoid billions of buzzing cicadas set to swarm the area after 17 years of living below ground.
Called periodical cicadas, the thumb-sized insects emerge every 17 years and fly around in a noisy, mating frenzy before dying weeks later, littering the area with crunchy shells.

UGH, I fucking HATE CICADADS!!! I know they're harmless little creatures, but they're discusting looking and they skeeve me out. Ever since I was a kid. I think what did it for me was watching a kid in school who had one go in his hair and the noise is made and the kid going insane trying to get it out pretty much freaked me out.

Actually, there are 17 year-old cicadas 12 out of every 17 years and they're numbered Brood I, Brood II etc. Ths year we're on Brood X, which just happens to be the biggest brood of the 12 (it covers 15 states, including us). There won't be anymre 17 year Cicadas until 2007.
More info here. I'm almost positive linked to that link before in another thread - if you search it, you will probably find links to other cicada sites too. Cicadas are awsome.

Last time the 17 year cicadas were in town, I was 13 or 14 & at baseball camp for a big chunk of the summer. Some of those bastards were so big, when they buzzed us during stretching, a few kids wound up with bruises on their arms & legs from them. One kid even got scratches accross about a four inch section of his cheek & a little cut on his earlobe.
And, oh, how the little kids loved using them for batting practice. They make a surprisingly loud sound when you make contact with an aluminum bat.

It gets worse. Sunday's Wash Post article had a line about how dogs and cats can eat so many cicadas that they get "horribly constipated." Apparently, cicadas are the spammers of the insect world.
I used to get freaked out by the molted shells on the trees.
Sorry about your dog.

I don't even like this one.
And isn't it funny that they both make loud, annoying noises? ...And crunch when you step on them?

I was camping once with friends and had to pee. it was too dark, and i was too drunk to find my way to the bathrooms, so I found myself an area behind some rocks, squatted and started to tinkle. one of these ugly things came crawling along right into my pee stream. I killed it the fucking bastard.

If you catch a big one you can tie a length of thread around their head or feets and have a lil flying friend on a leash.
Aint we got fun?
Cicadas always remind me of the movie Lucas.

For the dog lovers here: I can sympathize. My old dog, God rest her soul, I fed these fucking things to her by the DOZENS.
Now that I have another pooch, I look forward to watching him chase and eat them too.
I'm actually psyched for these locusts to appear.

It has started...
Billions of cicadas emerge in eastern U.S. (http://www.yahoo.com/_ylh=X3oDMTB1M2EzYWFoBF9TAzI3MTYxNDkEdGVzdAMwBHRtc GwDaWUtYmV0YQ--/s/95241)

[Caution is in order, however, for would-be cicada gourmets. An Indiana man who ate nearly 30 sauteed cicadas had an allergic reaction and had to be treated with antihistamines, steroids and a shot of adrenaline.
The experience wasn't all bad, apparently.

Now that's just sick!

It must be a regional thing, but I have never seen the ones like in the picture with the red eyes. Around here, they always seem to look the same. I understand that this particular brood of them is different than the ones last year, but every year since I was a kid I look for them and they always seem the same, kind of a blackish green body with dark eyes.
On a side note regarding regional variations of a creatures appearance, squirrels by me are gray, but by my aunt, who lives up in Westchester, I have seen many black ones!

Yup. We have black ones in Westchester. They escaped from a circus and have lived here ever since.

In Philly, we called cicadas "Katydids".
Yea, I know. Weird.
