Chernoybl was a horrible horrible disaster. It must have been surreal to visit that area afterword, it must be crazy to see a huge town like that and not a soul in the entire place.

In Toxicology I volunteered to be the first to present their research; and mine was on then, the measurement of the different radioactive isotopes that are given off as the material from the reactor decays.
OK, for those who are young or with short attention spans; reactor number 4 caught fire and then then exploded on that day. "The Truth About Chernobyl" by I can remember go to amazon is translated from the russian.
That means tons of radioactive stuff was spread around the area, and with the fire, into the atmosphere. Quite simply, the fire had to be put out; whoever went in would surely die doing it, and they went in and put it out and died. Others died that day, but for the, the firefighters remain clear...
Amazing thing 1: To show you a time when there was a Soviet Union, and said USSR was secretive about things; they didnt say a word. Not a single word about it got out until people sampling the air, over Sweden, i think, began finding radioactive isotopes in the air [there are Many Other *natural* radioactive isotopes in the air too, let's not forget, ELF fans; nature is dirty too], but these had the signature of reactor. I think it was spotted thermally too; but it was DAYS before they would admit to anything, and they refused almost all assistance.
The fix? None. Know what they did to reactor 4? They encased it in a literal mountain of concrete. And underneath the concrete, which is decaying nicely, are tons of the stuff, still hot as hell, in terms of radioactivity. No effort, i believe, has been made to clean that core out. I think they just keep pouring in the cement.
Amazing. That was a bullet that hit, but only a graze, relatively speaking. Not trying to sound cold, but the worse-case scenarios for this stuff are SO much worse then what could have been. Many factors made Chernobyl, actually, spread less then it could have, and if something had happened to the others? Yow.
Oh, the China Syndrome isn't. The core is hot as hell and would indeed sink into the ground, but slowly, not the core shooting through earth to China, which isnt our antipode anyway.
Christ I type too much.
Qs?

That site was really fucking cool.
Thanks.
Very interesting story.
And the chick's Yoda English made it relate even better.
Ive investigated long since de-activated and abandoned Navy war and hospital ships up in Baltimore, and thats spooky and interesting enuff.
I can only imagine what a fairly large city would be like...empty for nearly 20 years w/ nobody around for miles.
I definitely suggest taking a peek at the pix on the site to get a good sense of what it would be like.

The pictures are real, but she did not motorcycle through Chernobyl like she said.
There's a bunch of other sites out there with more pictures showing the area, they do allow tours.

"This town, is coming like a ghost town
All the clubs have been closed down
This place, is coming like a ghost town
Bands won't play no more
too much fighting on the dance floor
Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?
We danced and sang, and the music played ina de boomtown
This town, is coming like a ghost town
Why must the youth fight against themselves?
Government leaving the youth on the shelf
This place, is coming like a ghost town
No job to be found in this country
Can't go on no more
The people getting angry
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town
This town, is coming like a ghost town"
