View Full Version : Best computer brand out there?
so many brands so much confusion! I like Dell's they're easy to setup and no headaches what so ever. HP my mother had B4 this Dell and It was old and , well old! Had an IBM which was also old, didnt even have a name brand Processor chip in it so it was slow, and still needs to be repaired! Worked with them at my old job and they were constantly breaking down. Compaqs look nice and easy but herd there were problems. E-Machines I wouldnt even look at considering it just sounds ghetto and its the old Packard Bells. Sony's anre nice too look at but WAY over priced. SO who would you go with?

I swear by DELLs. But their technical support ABSOLUTELY SUCKS since they outsourced to F'ing India.
You ask them a question. They put you on hold and then search the knowledge-base. Hell I can do that

For my main PC I've got a Sony Vaio which I upgraded with more RAM and a new Video Card which has been GREAT. Also, I have an old Compaq upstairs that I run Linux on.
For a laptop I've got a IBM Thinkpad. Rugged and great battery life is the way to go.

ding ding ding, you are a winner. i own a dell and was thinking about getting a jukebox but got "talked out if" by some script reading shithead on the other side of the world.
go to comp usa and pick up this book, build your pc: high performance gamers' mod pc by edward chen. you can read the book in 2 hrs and build something with twice the balls, but a quarter of the price.

Ive been pretty impressed with the Dells they have in my company, they seem very solid. The one I have my brother made, and he got all the best parts and its running XP Professional, which is so stable, its never crashed on me. Unless you know someone who can make it up for you, Id say go with the Dell.

have you noticed how dell is trying to upstage apple by selling whole sale to companies and educational institutes, just like apple did in the 80s.
and to honest, it depends what you want to do with your machine. i'm on a emachine i bought for my parents - $600 hd, monitor, printer.
i have a dell upstairs running win me, pretty solid but xp is better. much more memory and such, about $2g's, but near top of the line 3 yrs ago.
at work, i work on a g3, w/ os 9.0.2. very tempremental but quicker between apps. $2700 when purchased.
and hawk, below my sig do you see ???????????

i own a dell, have had it for a year. everyone bitches about support, but i never had a problem with them.....cause i never had to call
anything that went wrong was always something i fucked up with software and was usually easily fixable with a call to some friends

I usually build all my own. Pricewise you can save a little. Not like a few years ago where it would have been 1/2 the price. It is really not that hard. Gateway's are decent Machine's. If anyone asks me, I tell them to go with a dell. You can get a nice one for under 500 with shipping included. P4 2.8Ghz with 512 ram - just got one from my chicks mom. she is very happy with it.
I have an IBM at work, but it is a workstation with dual Xenon's. I always love IBM's, and if you are looking for a laptop def. IBM over everything. T series.

oh yea, you will pay out the ass for an IBM. I think only the laptop is worth it. The desktops are nice, but the laptops are really top of the line. little things they do right from an engineering standpoint really make a great end result. Awesome software, recovery, options, wireless. the whole deal. All of my IBM laptops have been bought by the company so far, and 3000 is a lot to spend, but if i needed a new laptop soon i would seriously consider a new IBM regardless of cost.

When you said its gonna be a dell so i can link it and transfer info and shit, i thought you meant with a home computer or something. And a USB 256MB USB drive is only like 40 bucks.
If you are going to get a dell, check this site (http://gotapex.com/deals.php) out for a new deal everyday. it really is great.

If you're trying to save money, you can get 2 times the computer for the same price of an equivelent name brand when you build your own computer. In a few days, I'm planning on buying a 2ghz AMD, 512mb RAM, w/ 120gb hd. It's all for a little over $700, with a few unique costomizations of my own. Shipping is only about $40, which isn't that bad considering everything I'm buying. The problem with Dell is all the forced extras. I'm planning on installing Windows 2000 Pro, which I already own, so I don't need to spend $200 on Windows XP.

I've had the same Dell PC for about five years now. It's only just now fallen behind in being able to handle the newest games 100%, otherwise it still runs almost perfectly.
But if I didn't have this, I'd only accept a computer named after someone's penis.

are the AMD chips any good? I always thought they were shit until one of the people I work with said they are as equal if not a bit better than a P4. The only reason they are cheaper is because they dont spend that much on advertising. So If I thin about getting a new comp I might just go with E-machines However I really want the new P4 with the HT technology, can you say geek hard on?

AMD chips are much cheaper than Intel chips, and I'm convinced they're better. HP also makes their computers with AMD chips.

Intel chips are better and audio/video encoding. AMD recently has introduced the new 64bit chips that are really challenging intel. With both brands, the different chipsets, i.e. type of mother board and ram, make a significant difference in the overall performance. One feature very often overlooked is memory timing. This can be crucial to performance on many different types of applications. The number of Mhz do not always matter. AMD chips are very solid and a great buy. A great intel chip is the 2.4C. Great chip for overclocking. Stay 2 of 3 chips behind the current fastest and you will have an awesome chip at a great price. 3 months ago, those were prolly the most expensive and best chips.

SO the way I was explaned it today, AMD has a faster clock speed than a P4, however the P4 is better for gaming and graphics and stuff like that. As with the AMD the platform isnt as wide or something like that so its limited in a way. I also leared that the celeron chip is the most stable ship out there, what ever that really means

you've been lied to. a lot. celerons are for wiping with. the difference between an athlon and a p4 are negligible for your purposes.
