Review: Taking Lives

[Little Tony DeFranco]

Director D.J. Caruso (Salton Sea) forgot to read "Serial Killer Movies For Dummies" and botched a simple formula for a quick paycheck. Angelina Jolie plays an FBI profiler called to Montreal (don't Canadians have their own investigators?) to assist a case of serial murders. Borrowing the "Mr. Ripley" syndrome, Martin Asher takes the identity of his victims, his mom was bad, he was a twin (!), and he is violent. Costa (Ethan Hawke) says he witnessed a murder and saw the killers face. The police use him as bait to catch the killer. Ileana (Jolie) falls for Costa. Throw in autopsies and some blood and red herrings in the mix.
Keifer Sutherland pops up as mystery guy who is bad, the classic "I can't here his microphone, too much static" wire sequence (clich‚) and dead bodies that pop out of dark places (boo), also the 'dead meat' cop ready to die. The only mystery is just how bad this movie can get and it does get worse. I was hoping for the 'rooftop dangle' ending but we get the 'alone in the farmhouse' ending instead. Junk..garbage..same-o-shit with bad dialogue. Good French actors (Oliver Martinez, Tcheky Karyo) play Canadian cops, and Gena Rolands is the bad mom. The worst script ever written and the director is to blame for not explaining the killers motive ruins the whole thing. Browntown Says "when you enter the room, why not turn on the lights? This way you can see the killer." Kill Me!

Having not seen the movie, and only knowing of the plot from the commercials and this review, I guess Ethan Hawke is the killer.

I don't want to ruin it for anyone who still cares to see it, but ...

... yeah, he's right. I mean, why the hell else is Ethan Hawke even in the movie? Crime witnesses don't hang around a movie for two hours after they've made their statment.

There's also another surprise twist at the end which is a little more unexpected, but it's not too hard to figure out either. And even if you don't figure it out, it's not worth the admission price.
