Honestly, what drives a person to throw on a big ass spoiler, shinny ass rims that cost more than the car alone, and out on that muffler cap so the car can be herd from 10 miles away? I just dont get it? Then on top of that they put in a system that basically vibrates the trunk of the car so much the paint starts to fall off? Thank you! Thank you so much for pointing this out cause I thought I was the only one. Back in my day (1991) the big thing with cars was the Charger, Duster, El Camino, Barracuda, etc..... the MUSCLE cars! Are these really the "muscle" cars of today? I appreciate a motor head casue they truly look like they like to get in and take care of the car but these pip squeak little rat bastards (and they may do motor work, I don't know) throw on a spoiler, a really loud muffler (I thought the muffler was to MUFFLE the sound) and have the damn car an inch or so from the ground. It is beyond me!

I don't get it either - but they have a billion dollar culture that is spreading. You'll probably be seeing it more on the east coast.

They are called "Tuners". It started in Japan and eventually made its way to the west coast. It has been big in California for years and slowly crept across the plains.

It's all about showing off. They have competitions called "Sliding", where the tuned up cars will skid and slide and they are not only judged on how stable the slide is but how good the car looks from its side.

I don't tune, but I know all this from a presentation I attended recently at work. The furthest I ever got with this was putting a Bones sticker on my Mongoose when I was 12.

There's been 3 episodes so far. It's interesting to see them take a rusted out piece of shit and tune them.

I don't understand why people so are pissed off by this. A man customizing is ride is a tradition as old as the car itself. Yes, everyone would love a Ferrari, but few people can afford one. With a couple of relatively inexpensive (to the sticker of a Ferrari, anyway) upgrades, you can have a 20,000 car with performance specs similiar to your dream ride. People customize thier cars to race anyway...very few people do it for show...and the ones who do are usually paid to do it. Racing is a tradition as old as the car itself as well...hell man's underlying desire to compete is as old as man itself.

You might not understand the feeling of driving a modified car until you actually sit in one and feel your head snap back as you take off...its really something else.

It's a dominance thing...."my car is better than yours"...its something to take pride in...it's not the best thing to take pride in but for some its the really the only thing they want to show off about themselves...

That neon looks like fucking shit though. I've seen neons riced up real nice...you wouldn't even know it was a Neon...275 hp top speed of 165...

the better majority of people are struggling to get by and are under paid. yet the car modification/ customization industry is booming.

i understand people are pimping out older cars, yet you see so many newer models, especially produced by the industry, being pimped. what the fuck is going on?

and i have to give it to jeff; driving a performance car is like no other. once i get a better job i want to trade in my jetta for a 99 wolfsburg gti. i drove a triptronic and it felt soooooooo nice. still within my budget and modifiable... nice rims, tint, maybe some ground effects, that's it.
