ONE WORD: SELLOUT.
Explain to me how a person who during his entire career on O&A badmouthed popular media (and MTV) some how found his way onto a Spring Break alongside Randy from Big Fat Obnoxcious Fiance, Pauley Shore and Trishelle From Real World?
OH yeah...I know....$$$$.
Way to go, Jim.
What's next? Vos Hosting Who wants to be a millionaire? (although i do admit that would be awesome...)

I don't know what to say about stuff like this.
From one perspective, you can't blame the guy. It helps his career, he gets a fat load of cash, and he gets exposure.
On the other hand, he's going against everything he stands for, representing a cable network he has said he despises, and working for Viacom, the company that previously fired him.
It's impossible to judge. I guess you have to be him.

I was watching this last night. I was disgusted in the fact that Norton was involved with Pauly Shore. At the end Norton did say something to the effect of: "and that is this end of this god awful game."

Give him a chance. Sure he'll have to shift away from the crinkle crinkle bits, but fuck it; I dont know why, I havent watched the channel since they stopped playing music, so maybe he will find some weird niche.
And Tall James brings up a point. I worked with Matt Pinfield for 10 years at WHTG in NJ. He was so good he won Billboard's Alternative MD of the year twice. Then MTV gave him the shot; host 120 minutes.
I know exactly what Matt made as an MD at that station. The pay in radio is, in a word, horrific. So guys like Matt spin at the Melody and do appearences. Not for exposure; to pay dental bills for the kids. So when MTV puts a contract in front of you that will pay you 10X what you have ever made before; that's gotta be a decision that involves not only morals and ethics of your art, but in Matt's and others, an opportunity to provide for an extended family.
The top pay I made at that station, actually taking over Matt's sunday night locals music show: $6.50/hr.

yeah, i never really know what to make of this sort of thing. i care a lot more when it happens with bands i like, but i guess the idea is the same. if they can make the money and get the exposure, etc. without compromising themselves, then i'm all for it. it's when they start pandering to the lowest common denominator and being something other than what they were that i have a problem.

I imagine that when Jim started as a regular on O n A alot of comics probably saw that as selling out from stand up. He had to compromise, couldn't use the exact language he wanted to and in alot of ways could not be quite as dirty as he may have wished.
Meanwhile most of us were exposed to Jimmy through Opie and Anthony. The way i see it is if he can gather an audience of loyal supporters through another medium like he did through radio, more power to him. He may have to compromise, but alot of succesful comics do end up having to.

So him working for Viacom on Comedy Central is ok. Look the guy got a gig in Cancun surrounded by millions of drunken college girls, and all he has to do is 2 shows and have a great time in Mexico why not go for it.

Why not do it? It gets him more exposure and for a comic that seems important as far as people going to see him in clubs.
It would be selling out if he completely changed his act on stage and became a clean safe comic.
Just like if Brian Regan started doing Dices material its not who he is and it would feel phony.

Well, explain to me what you said in that posti really don't see why i should have to explain myself to you, but whatever.
what i was saying is that there's two ways to go about handling newly acquired success and the like - either you can take the money and everything, but still put out the same product you always did (be it comedy, music, or something else), or you can completely change your style in order to cater to your new audience, or to the people handing you your fat paycheck.
relevant to this thread - if norton goes on mtv and takes their cash, but doesn't dilute his humor in order to be more digestable to a wider audience, then i see no reason to have a problem with him doing so. if, on the other hand, norton takes mtv's cash, and then starts telling jerry seinfeld-esque jokes about airplane peanuts in order to continue receiving that pay, then i would say he's a big sellout and it would really piss me off.
hopefully you won't think that this was just an attempt to raise my post count again. you know, like i always do.

Um, O&A constantly talked about wrestling and the WWF and Vince, before and after the XFL debacle. They were guys and they liked wrestling. So it wasn't that strange to see them getting involved with a McMahon product. The thing with Norton is that him and that whole show expressed consistently how disgusted they were with the MTV generation of teeny boppers and that section of the media. There's a difference.
Once again, I'm not gonna bash norton at all, cuz if MTV offered me a fat sack of cash to go on TV and suck Justin Timberlake's dick until he jizzed in my eye, I'd probably be the first to do it.

How is hosting a spring break game show that is scripted to hell by some stupid writers whose demographic 12-16 year olds showing off his comic genius? Its not like he was doing a set or anything. Or any of his own material.
I am not bashing Norton here (or katylina for that matter), I am glad he is making money anyway he can, but lets not pretend that anyone watching who did not know Jim Norton before knows him any better now. He will be forgotten in about 10 minutes from anyone who did not know him before becuase he did not do anything memorable. No horrible yet funny jokes about sick people or fat people. No funny sex stories about him and hookers. He was just a chinless figure head for another stupid springbreak game. I think this actually hurt him because his loyal fans are now looking at him like a sell out.
Maybe this is just the first part of introducing him to the MTV crowd for him to get his own show or be in a show on the network? Who knows.
Tough Crowd is an extension of him and his comedy. It is an open forum to discuss issues. Once in a while he can tell a blue story/joke and get his brand of humor out the masses who maybe do not listen to O&A. That was great. In my opinion this was not.

Norton will always get his comedy out there-- why else would he whore himself out on radio shows, TV, porno awards, movies etc. The more the public sees him, the better known he will be. Eminem always blasts MTV, but face it, it's watched by so many millions of people, it's definately going to get you recognition if you are on there. As I said, he should do anything and everything to get himsef noticed. Our Lil' Jimmy is growing up...

First of all the best part of this thread was the exchanges between Arienette and Boondocksaint. Had me laughing for a good 3 minutes. Second a comedian's art is his career, he is his own muse and benefactor. It is good to see the mainstream catch on to what we noticed a few years ago, this guy is at least different. Comedians have been on MTV for years whoring out. They gave Jon Stewart his career, discovered Sandler, Colin Quinn, and Dennis Leary( who is actually, no longer funny since the comedian whose material he was ripping off died). Anyone else remember Sam's Wild Thing video? Apex of the MTV sellout, yet the guy is legendary. The best thing is that you know Norton was tortured by being there.
For example: Kindest Regards, Your Name

Who gives a shit if he "sold out"? It's fine and all to have principles, but they don't pay the bills.
I anticipated this arguement. He doesn't NEED MTV...he just hosted the AVN Awards...he's a regular on comedy central...his career is picking up steam...its not like MTV would allow Norton to ever be NORTON....you can tell he was restrained and heavily edited...
THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO GET YOUR NAME OUT THEN FUCKING MTV.
Bad choice, in my opinoin...but then again, its my opinion. I'm sorry but anyway you fucking slice it its selling out. He lambasted popular media for years, now he's BECOMING popular media...
Yes Metallica sold out every fucking seat, but who has respect for metallica anymore?
It's NOT ok to sell out if you built a reputation as Mr. Anti Establishment.
I honestly don't see how far the "i'm so ugly, im so pasty, look at me I look like a bald child with bitch tits" can go while being surrounded by hot college coeds, celebrities and exotic Cancun locales. Sooner or later it looses its punch. Look at Stern...how shocked are we by the "i have a small penis, i am so ugly" bullshit he continues to run...you fuck the hottest blonde ever....you have girls on your ass all the time...sorry but it doesn't work anymore...you're not the akward, gangly jew you used to be....

Lots of comics have reps that girls dont like em or whatever, and they can still keep that rep, while they get some serious ass behind the scenes. Look at Drew Carey. Total whore.

you can catch me on mtv spring break 2005 with franklin from boy meets boy and billy baldwin.
Such a sell out. And are you sure it's Billy? I'm pretty sure they are all interchangable if it's not.
It's an old cliche, I know, but supposedly, the secret to life is finding something you love to do and then figure out some way to get people to pay you for it. He did it. Good for him. If I become successful for any reason, I would be the first male endorser of tampons if they'd pay me enough. But that's just me.

I just got off the phone with Norton...here's what I have to say about this...
Over the years I've watched singers, actors and comedians do things I never expected them to do to further thier careers. Ozzy doing commercials with Florence Henderson, Metallica against file swapping, DMX on Sharon Osborne Show, and now Jim Norton on MTV...I just remember things being different...when you saw a band on HeadBangers Ball you'd never see them on TRL...everything's crossing over...the lines are so blurry now a days...I know some of you know what I'm talking about....
Listening to Norton talk about this, you DO have to wonder...is DMX any less hardcore the minute he leaves the Sharon Osbourne set...is Ozzy any less cool for trying to cash in on the popularity of the Osbournes? Listening to Norton, I have to say I was wrong in calling him a sellout. Besides the fact that he was contractually obligated to do the show (which doesn't make any difference), he basically said "I'm still Jim Norton, aren't I?"
The answer is yes, you are. I feel like such fool, I really do. It's so easy for me to sit here behind my desk in my cramped little office at the porno factory and cast judgement about people and not take into consideration all the shit a performer has to go through before MTV even considers them worthy of thier time.
All of you know me here...I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong if I am indeed wrong...I'm wrong here. I mean, I still feel weird about it...but I understand why he did it and why its not my place to call someone a sell out without undestanding the man and the situation. And for that, Jim, I apologize.
I just wanted to say this before I finish this...I would have never reacted so severely if I wasn't such a big Norton fan. I stil think he's one of the best comics I've ever seen on stage..and now that he took the time out of his life to call ME of all people (and I truly am a nobody) I have a lot of respect for him as a person too.
Sorry if I offended, Jim.

And I'm sorry I can't hear that "soupy-drek"-little miscreant on the radio anymore.
I also am sorry for making fun of the retarded. Even if John Elway looks like one of them.

All fans want 'their' guy to be more popular and can't understand when he's not and then when the masses get a hold of him they cry sellout. As fans it's our job.
Plus we all despise MTV as being the root of all evil in pop culture today that it most certainly is. It shoves trends down people's throats so hard that they no longer follow trends but rather cause them. Trends are no longer something that something just happened one day (as I recall my sweet checkerboard on my fat laces back in middle school). Now the trend is some black guy (they start all the trends) is shown on MTV with one pant leg up and now all of a sudden we have millions of assholes running around with one pant leg up.
I understand Norton going on MTV...who wouldn't do something that could possibly vault him from making a good living at their career to possibly going on to being set for life with fuck you money. Would I prefer that he didn't do it? Absolutely. Pop musicians have to suck MTV cock. Comedians don't have to. The only high profile jobs comedians get on MTV is hosting awards shows. I don't think MTV is a necesary stop on Jim's career arc to fame and fortune but it might be a nice short cut and I can't begrudge him for that.
BTW...whoever said (sorry - I'm too lazy to go back and check) something about Headbanger's Ball bands not being on TRL doesn't remember the Headbangers Ball with the Ulta-Pussy Ricky Rachtman (look everybody - today I'm dressed like Mike Muir from Suidial Tendencies...today I'm Lemmy from Motorhead...etc). I remember the show where that poser had Pearl Jam on. I remember shitheads like White Lion being on there (come out of the break with Pantera playing and Ulta-Pussy says "...welcome back to MTV's Headbangers Ball...now for some White Lion with 'Wait'". Also don't forget about Limp Dilznik on TRL. MTV sucks the most ass humanly possible. Whoever is responsible for that channel should die a horrific public death. The final images of his shitty channel before I personally press the plunger blowing up the TRL studios should be the MTV founder self immolating to the soothing sounds of Fear Factory.
