He's been with the band for 4 years and hasn't been part of an actual CD release. That has to be a record of some kind, usually people quit, are fired or spilt after a release.

The eccentric musician, who wears a fried-chicken bucket on his noggin and talks only through a hand puppet...

sounds like a great guy!

this is getting really pathetic. i was, am, and probably always will be a huge guns n' roses fan. it's hard for me to watch this trainwreck continue. the band has effectively been broken up for over ten years. it's about time axl just gives up this nonsense already. let us have our memories and move on.

They would have been so much better off putting out the new album in November 2002 the way they originally planned. I mean how technically sound does Axl want the thing to be. In the time even since that original release date Velvet Revolver had their little stint until Scott went into rehab and I just wonder if the music climate has changed and how much Axl pays attention to it. Two years ago (at least in the metal community) alot of the nu metal was still at the forefront. Now that trend has really died off and metal is back to metal in a sense. Is he trying to fit in with the times? It almost seems that way. Just put out the record and be done with it. If indeed Buckethead is frustreatd I can understand. He even put out a record last year.

Not disagreeing here, I know what you mean, but for me "Buckethead Quits GnR" translates to:

Hired guitarist for Axl Rose opts out of the group of musicians he was playing with.

What this group of musicians has to do with the Band Guns N Roses [appetite; lies, illusionI+II, that band]; besides that Guns N Roses ex-singer who also holds legal title to the name GnR decides to use said name, is beyond me.

IMHO.

I agree Mike, I just cut and paste that headline from MTV.com

Greatest Hits comes out Tuesday, but after pulling out my GnR CDs I don't see a reason to buy it, I can just download the silver cover art and burn the tracks from my CDs. (I even have the Sympathy for the Devil CD single!)

The record company is so desperate to recoup any money on Chinese Democracy, they're releasing the greatest hits album. Axl, Slash and Duff tried to sue to keep the cd from being released. That's gotta tell you something, if Axl and Slash can actually agree on something.

I think that happened during the Use You Illusion albums. Appetite for Destruction was just a brutal sonic assault from angry guys who wanted it. The GnR Lies electric stuff kicks ass, and I guess the GnR fans know the acoustic stuff from that.

I saw them with Faith No More and Metallica whenever it was at Giants Stadium.

Faith No More: Amazing as always though not many saw them.

Metallica: Just blew the place away.

And then we waited...

and waited...

and over two hours later Axl decides the stars are aligned or who the fuck knows and they come out and... they were ok. It was already gone, what made them. Axl was still the angry guy, but instead of taking it out on writing kick ass stuff; he took it out on whoever was mixing the monitors each night. Ugh.

The final straw for me was when Hetfield got burned by the pyro at that one show, and GnR wouldnt play, and the fans took it out on the arena and parking lot. I bet if Axl had hurt himself mid-set the guys in Metallica would have said fuck it we're not really ready yet but lets get on stage and make sure everything is cool for the crowd. That really pissed me off.

Saw the Who at the garden when Townshend really fucked up his hand during a windmill, and it was a stop-the-show maybe end-the show situation. But how fucking cool: Pete goes backstage to get it taken care of; and Daltrey comes out and tells everyone the deal; grabs an acoustic, and next thing we're all doing a fucking sing-along for a while. Fucking A well done.

Geffen has paid $13.5 million into the "Chinese Democracy" project, which has been more than seven years in the making, the source said.

Why the Eff would a record company pay that much for one album? What does a normal Big Stuio album cost? Maybe "Chinese Democracy" is actually a 15 album project like "Use Your Illision" was a 2 album project.

Aren't "AIN'T IT FUN" and "SINCE I DON'T HAVE YOU" on 'Spaghetti'?

They do a lot of Cover songs, Looks like 5 out of 14 tracks of their grestest hits are covers (The two from 'Spaghetti' as well as "KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR," "LIVE AND LET DIE" and "SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL")

Metallica did a couple all Covers album as well. GO figure.

Perhaps Axl believes that "Chinese Democracy" will achieve the same sort of legendary what-if status that is currently enjoyed by Brian Wilson's lost Beach Boys album..."Smile".

If so, he's an idiot.

I don't know, I was listening to both "Use Your Illusion" disc this past weekend, there's a lot of cool music not on the greatest hits (but then you might as well just re-release Appetite, Illusion 1 and 2 and just stick Patience and Sympathy for the Devil in there somewhere)

So, it's been 10 years since I ran to the Record Store to buy those things. I'm getting old.

Something that is quite telling on the album:

Out of the fourteen tracks, FOUR of the greatest hits are cover songs. Which means that the money making potential of the album for the band is hampered, because they don't get the royalties, etc.

Perhaps that's part of the lawsuit.

I'm pissed that a few songs are missing off greatest hits, most notably "Estranged".

Why the Eff would a record company pay that much for one album? What does a normal Big Stuio album cost?

Great Questions.

for the first: the record industry is insane.

For the second: anywhere from DIY to $30 million, which I believe was the final cost of getting MJ's "Thriller" from studio to shelves.

These days the technology is such that People like Korg, Roland, Tascam, Digidesign, MOTU, etc. sell products for well under $1,000 that contain, essentially, all the recording technology of a 'big studio' say, 20 years ago. More really, with Digital recording: edits are done in seconds instead of cutting tape; whole sections can be lifted from one place and put to another, vocal pitch correction, and samples of real drums, bass, guitar, etc.

Springsteen's "Nebraska" supposedly went from a Tascam Portastudio [it used Cassettes! shit there's some here prolly never owned a played] to a Mixing and Mastering Studio. Van Halen recorded "Women and Children First" in about 14 days.

So; it depends on the band, and who has the money. People like to get the *Big Name* for the Producer of their albums, and these guys aren't cheap. Studio time is horrifically expensive, and bands like GnR usually just "lock-out" a studio, essentially buying it for the time they are recording there. Then you call Bob Rock or Trevor Horn or Quincy and you're off...

All of this means nothing to the music, however. Some bands work fast: a few takes and let's move on. Some bands do dozens of takes of dozens of version of songs.

In the end; it's the Quality of the Music, not the studio. Listen to those hits from the 1950's. Most of those were done in studios using a couple of Mics. You got your 'Mix' by moving people and instruments closer or farther away from the Mics. Real Multi-tracking wasn't refined until Les Paul got his thing going.

And those 50s songs fucking KILL. The sound? Just the greatest, sweetest sound ever.

Listen to the Elvis Sun Sessions. In Mono; as they were recorded. My GOD! This is the Elvis that had the light of God or something in him, along with the reds. Just the most wonderful, fantastic sound.

He never, ever even got close again. Ever. Recorded in a 'recording studio' the size of small garage.

More bands are recording at their homes and garages. at 24-bit/96KHz. That would have cost you $50,000 five years ago. Ten years ago; that resolution didn't exist. The technology is here.

Side note; some producers, like Machine are still avowed fans of 2-inch tape. They run it at rediculously fast speeds something like FEET not inches per second. Many argue that Digital is Good, while Analog with the right Noise Reduction is superior.

The debates continue.

But gun to my head, to actually answer your Q? I'd say a couple of Million is the tag for a Major Label album. Again, an average, because some bands record albums for what other pay just to put the drum tracks down [hello, Lars?].

Amen brother.

I don't know. Early rock was all about capturing the "feel". Aside from the 50s singles Mike talked about there were some great albums made cheaply and quickly that were all about capturing the moment. The first Led Zeppelin album and John Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" come to mind.

But then, thanks to Phil Spector, the Beatles and Brian Wilson, studiocraft became more important or as important. Hell, "Good Vibrations", a song that's only 3:35 long, took months to finish at a cost of $1 million. It's often rated the top single of all-time. So does "feel" or "sound" matter?

"The band has been put in an untenable position by guitarist Buckethead and his untimely departure," Rose says. "During his tenure with the band Buckethead has been inconsistent and erratic in both his behavior and commitment -- despite being under contract -- creating uncertainty and confusion and making it virtually impossible to move forward with recording, rehearsals and live plans with confidence."

Axl... you are such an umitigated asshole and hypocrite.
