I don't usually post whiny shit here, but i've been having a lot of shit weighing me down and I just need to cvetch.
Me and my girlfriend have been looking for an apt, but no one will rent to me because I make way too little money. I make too little money because my college education and English degree left me qualified for NOTHING. I currently work as a temp, but can't even find full time work at that.
But working part time wouldn't be bad if I could get into gradschool . . . I just got rejected by my top choice school.
Did I mention that my girlfriend is currently in Orlando and has 2 weeks to move out or is gonna be living on the streets?
I think the rejection from grad school hurts the most. It effectively invalidates everything that I thought I ever had any talent at in my entire life (I was pursuing my MFA in writing). Now I feel cursed with this need to write, but knowing that i'm not good enough to really be a success at it.
i just don't see any open doors right now.

And I usually don't respond, but here goes. You are a young man...I recently asked my parents when they started actually saving money...they said around 30, that was a relief to me because I have yet to really do so myself. As far as the profession goes, I don't know much about writing but I do know people who write. All of them do it as a secondary thing and have had some things published. I think you should never give up that dream but don't put all your eggs in one basket. Work and save and do your writing in the meantime. You are gonna be fine. There's a place in this world for an intelligent person, find it.

Wow, i feel for you man. I am graduating in May. It is a very scary thing. Can you maybe move in with your parents? Does your GF make enough money to get an apartment in her name thn you can split the rent?
Did you apply to any other grad schools. Hopefully you will get into one of those. Instead of getting the master in Fine Arts, why not try for an MBA or master in finance or something. Maybe then you will have more career opertunities. Granted I know nothing about how english Dgrees work or what type of jobs you are looking for, but if jobs are not working out now, maybe a new major would help.

Sorry to hear of your experience with Grad School. There are others, perhaps?
As to writing; as best it pours out, at worst you keep a daily journal and note the weather.
I have maybe 50 or so published pieces in various rags; and either got nothing for them, or, let's see; the East Coast Rocker used to pay something around $25 for an 800 word review. Ack.
---
I know it's trite and cliche to say 'just write something' but establishing a discipline of the above mentioned journal has helped me through some blocks.
Now if I could only remove that 'Shitty Writing' block I have, I could be both Prolific AND Good!
Bad example of a Daily Writing Blog: Here (http://www.miketheteacher.com)
Some people I play with who keep written daily Diaries as a challenge; the challendge is 1,000 days of entries. If you have nothing to say? Note the weather: Guitar Craft Diaries (http://www.guitarcraft.com/diaries.cfm)
This post sucks. I write and I can't write. Hope you feel better, irrespective.

I've been out of school for a couple of years. I wanted an mfa so that I could work as a teacher. I've been working for businesses around Rockland and I do ok in that atmosphere, but without an MBA i'd never get ahead. I can't imagine going back to school unless it was for something I loved. But it is a possibility.
And I've been living at home for 2 years now, so that's out. Still, keep the ideas coming, i need as many opinions as possible.

You could move to Jersey. You will have enough credits to enroll in the "Alternate Route Program" which is where they allow you to teach with a provisional certificate. You then take classes twice a week for the year and at the end, you become a certified teacher. In NJ, you do not need a masters to teach. My girlfriend in currently enrolled in the program. She was dual major in college, one being math. She is a now a math teacher in the AR program. While you are here trying to get set up. try waiting tables or bar tending. not the most glamerous jobs, but they will pay the bills...hopefully.

Is there a specific location that you want to do your Masters at? Long Island University or CW Post on Long Island has a good Masters program for teaching. What about working as an editor?

my college education and English degree left me qualified for NOTHING
it's the SUNY on your diploma that is getting you nowhere; the only thing that school ever gave me was a bill and a piece of paper not even worth wiping my ass with(it's not even double ply!!!).
it sucks getting rejected, but now comes the fun part. get out there and get anything to bulster your resume. you can substitute teach in high schools, a lot of places buy freelance journalism (my friends boyfriend is going to afganistan and selling his stories), and write daily. i have 2 friends with books that are going to be published and they work kind of shitty jobs.
just keep plugging away buddy and don't get down on yourself. hopefully things will come around for you, but until them, pay your dues. good luck.

You are not alone my friend. I have been rejected by 6 of the 7 MFA programs I applied to. I had a plan that I was going to get my MFA, get some more poems published (I have two in 2 small reviews) and start teaching creative writing. So far, no luck. As frustrating as it is to get a flat rejection, "...we have decided not to recommend you for admission...", I think what makes me madder is the close to 700 bucks I had to shell out just to apply.
So how does that make you feel better? It probably doesn't. Just keep writing, keep submitting, and soon you will find your audience. Just because someone works at an MFA program doesn't necessarily mean they know dick about writing. Stay strong brother!!
After rereading your post, don't let them convince you you don't have the talent to make a career as a writer. Most writing that's out there now, especially top sellers are poorly written, they just happen to catch a popular topic. Some great writers weren't able to support themselves as writers.

But none of us got in is the thing. You know some stodgy old guy in the MFA department was like, "I like his writing sample...but what's this? He posts on RonFez.net? Absolutely not!!!"

I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do with my life. Of course, this can all change in a second, but I've reall y enjoyed writing. I started writing because I felt it was a good outlet for my emotions. I took a creative writing course in my highschool and my teacher says that I'm very talented at it. I write darker stuff so she also asked if I needed to "talk" and if I was ok. At that point I started to want to become a writer. She said one of the best ways to accomplish this is to become an English teacher. I know that my English teacher has written a few childrens books.
Best of luck to you sir, I'm sure everything will turn out fine.

I always felt that a career whos function is to support what mankind needs is a safe bet. Mans essentials, food, housing, water, sewage, health, birth and death, were all safe bets for getting and keeping a job. Sadly, many of those types of positions are transient. Theres always a need for people to wear clothes, eat food, drink water, have a roof over their heads, have a pot to piss in, reproduce, and finally a place to be buried in.
One of my first jobs was in a textile factory, then NAFTA came along and it was cheaper for stuff to be made overseas, so the job dried up. Currenly I am in the energy field, people need electric and heat. The type of job Im at can be done outside of here though, and thats getting me a little antsy. Being involved with the infrastucture though, thats something that will always be needed, just as transportation is also very important.
Writing? Theres millions of them, most get nowhere, though Im not suggesting you give that up, just keep it as a hobby, as others have suggested. My suggestion to you would be to try and get yourself something that will allow you to live while you keep writing. Id say to stay with your folks. Its better to live under their roof until you establish yourself. Relationships are also transient, Id suggest this girl to also live with her parents and you just see how it goes. I guess I boil life down to its essentials. Save up your twigs until you can make a nest and then chirp and show the world what you can do.
Did you know that funeral homes are a thriving industry that few people ever contemplate because of its nature? Services to them are vital and there are things you can do with your talents that might help you down the road. Boil life down to its basics and try to get yourself into an essential service, whether it sounds menial or not. Where I am, I am finding out that few people have the ability to express themselves. Im getting noticed because I have some ability in that area.
