View Full Version : What's your favorite CD compilation?

One disc, two disc, box set, series, whatever...what are your favorite comps that supposedly sum up a particular time or genre or label of music? No, "best of's" aren't part of this...these are strictly "various artists" only...

Right now, THIS beautiful three-disc set has been stuck in my CD player for over a week now...lotta obvious classics, but a ton of obscure or forgotten songs, and all have been stunningly remastered. There's only one Beatles song, "Ain't She Sweet," but between how that sounds here and how their "1" album sounded, it just convinces me they need to remaster their back catalogue, NOW.

I totally thought this was going to be put out by Rhino, but it's actually compiled by Hip-O records. But Rhino still remains the comp/re-issue king, and they put out my two absolute favorite comp series (Both sadly out of print)...

...The "D.I.Y" series, which detailed all of the punk and new wave and post-punk movements on both sides of the Atlantic between 1975 and 1985...some of them are pictured below, but there were nine total (And if you have them all, you have more than 50 of the songs on the equally excellent "No Thanks!" four-disc punk comp put out by Rhino at the end of 2003)...

Not particularly my thing but this one, Punch Drunk II by TKO Records is where is discovered the band Sixer from Richmond, currently in my top 5. Plus songs from Dropkick Murphys, Cock Sparrer, The Generators, The Bruisers, and a wonderful track by a Japanese all-female Oi band called Thug Murder

<img src=http://www.statenews.com/editionssummer97/071697/boot.jpg>
Also, Give Em The Boot is just awesome. A lot of Ska and Rocksteady: The Slackers, Stubborn Allstars, Pietasters, Rancid (of course), and an amazing song by a band called Choking Victim that I have never heard from since.

That British Invasion set looks really good Mojo. I'll have to add that one to my collection.

10. The Yardbirds - Little Games

Actually, I have this album. It's the Yardbirds' last one (right before Jimmy Page formed The New Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin). It's a pretty bad album but it does have some interesting tracks that hardcore Zeppelin fans might enjoy. The title track "Little Games" features a string arrangement by John Paul Jones. Then there's the accoustic number "White Summer" which Page would play and then segue into "Black Mountain Side". Finally, the song "Think About It" has a solo that would resurface in "Dazed and Confused".

Rubaiyat : Elektra's 40th Anniversary
Apparently, this double CD from 1990 is a bit hard to find. It's an album of Elektra artists during covers of other Elektra songs.

CD ONE

The Cure - Hello I Love You

Tracy Chapman - House Of The Rising Sun

Billy Bragg - Seven & Seven Is

Jevetta Steele - I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing

Gipsy Kings - Hotel California

Black Velvet Band - Werewolves Of London

The Sugarcubes - Motorcycle Mama

Shinehead - One Meatball

The Havalinas - Bottle of Wine

Pixies - Born In Chicago

Faster Pussycat - You're So Vain

Kronos Quartet - Marquee Moon

Phoebe Snow - Get Ourselves Together

Happy Mondays - Tokoloshe Man

Ernie Isley - Let's Go

Lynch Mob - Going Down

Ambitious Lovers - A Little Bit Of Rain 5

Anita Baker - You Belong To Me

Howard Jones - Road To Cairo

CD TWO

The Big F - Kick Out The Jams

The Georgia Satellites- Almost Saturday Night / Rockin' All Over The World

Sara Hickman - Hello I Am Your Heart

Teddy Pendergrass - Make It With You

Linda Ronstadt - The Blacksmith

Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb and Wayne Horvitz - Going Going Gone

Jackson Browne - First Girl I Loved

10,000 Maniacs - These Days

Metallica - Stone Cold Crazy

Danny Gatton - Apricot Brandy

Shaking Family - Union Man

They Might Be Giants - One More Parade

Howard Hewett - I Can't Tell You Why

Leaders Of The New School - Mt. Airy Groove

Shirley Murdock - You Brought The Sunshine

John Eddie - Inbetween Days

Beautiful South - Love Wars

Michael Feinstein - Both Sides Now

John Zorn - T.V. Eye

The Cure - Hello, I Love You (Slight Return)

Everybody should own this one. KILLER!!
It was the, at the time, current Elektra artists covering a classic Elektra artist's song. Really cool.

I like the one about the Bay City Rollers better...

12. Born To Lose - The Heartbreakers
I want born to lose tattoo'd on me. It works on so many levels--Johhny Cash, Social Distortion, Bouncing Souls, Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers...

15. Oh Bondage Up Yours! - X-Ray Spex
_Greatest_ _Song_ _Ever_

11. Chinese Rocks - The Heartbreakers
Good song. Written by Dee Dee Ramone, not originally recored by them, though

2. Teenage Kicks - The Undertones
I have a real soft spot for this song

14. If The Kids Are United - Sham 69
Covered so many times it's not even funny.

Okay. Yes. You're right. I have that one. I only disqualify that on a technicality because that's a compilation from the 80s (IRS), and I meant compilations looking back on the 80s trying to encapsulate the 80s in one way or another.

I REALLY wish there was some kind of Creation Records retrospective.

There are a few books out but nothing on cd or dvd that I could find. Although I did see on the Trio network a special about the start of Creation Records which was basically just Oasis footage. Theres a great DVD out called Live Forever thats all about the early 90's brittish invasion, and the new Oasis Definetely Maybe dvd has some really good stuff on it like interviews with Alan McGee and the people from Creation. They really should put out a box set though.

Has Matador decided to ignore "Exile in Guyville" because of Liz Phair's recent pop profile, or did they somehow lose the rights to use those tracks.

They featured stuff from that release on this 1997 comp:

The "Matador at 15" comp only covers 1999-2004, during which Liz Phair put out nothing on Matador. There was a 10th anniversay comp that had highlights from 1989-1999, including some Liz Phair tracks.
