View Full Version : Is this tacky?
My mother has a thing for getting family members collectible figurines. She has started both of my sisters on collecting Precious Moments, has gotten me a few Sports Impressions, Simpsons, and others, but last christmas she got me this that I have just put out because I have the extra shelf space now:
<img src=http://img13.photobucket.com/albums/v39/Garyo/911_figure.jpg>
My question, is this too gawdy and sad that someone is making these, or is it a nice tribute?

I don't know what's more tackier: the statue or the fact that you collect comics and cards from 9-11.
Why are you complaining? Maybe your mom bought it for you cuz she sees that you collect stuff about 9-11 or firefighterstuff.
That statue probably cost your mom a hunk of change from her Soc.Sec. so don't complain. Be grateful she was thinking of you and bought you something at all. (Which I bet, eventually you would have purchased yourself sometime down the road).

Its not so bad since it goes with the rest of the 9-11 stuff behind it.

Yes that's tacky. And the fact that you have made other purchases too of items/memorabilia from the tragic events of 9-11 is a disgrace. Before you buy stuff, inquire how much money is actually being given to the alleged charity (if at all). It seems that ALOT of companies, charities and businesses are exploiting the events for some cold hard cash and giving little back in return.
See there a 2 sides to every story.

yes
probably well intended, but the statue looks tacky, inappropriate, unbecoming, crude, inelegant, and tasteless ....
it reduces a national tragedy to a commerative piece of commerce .... for some reason the comic books (or photos/essays/books) seem within the boundaries of good taste ....
it's a subjective call, but a shrine to such an event is unsettling

In respect to the comics 100% of the profits went to 9-11 funds/red cross/etc. Depends which book where the money went, but you can read it on the inside.
As for the statue, it's definitely garish, but as long as the money went to a good cause, I have nothing against it. But that all depends on the company that made it.
<img src="http://www.chaoticconcepts.com/bans/rfjustjon11.gif"><BR><A href="http://www.chaoticconcepts.com">Chaotic Concepts</a>
The stuff was done by Marvel and DC and it came out a few months after 9/11, All of the proceeds were given to the major 9/11 fund. THere's some moving stuff in those books.
I don't know what's more tackier: the statue or the fact that you collect comics and cards from 9-11.
I had them away, and I only put them out because the shelf looked bare with just the figure and I couldn't think of anything else to put there.
That statue probably cost your mom a hunk of change from her Soc.Sec. so don't complain. Be grateful she was thinking of you and bought you something at all. (Which I bet, eventually you would have purchased yourself sometime down the road).
And who's complaining about it? I wanted to see what other people thought. And you have no clue about everything else you posted.

The statue isn't my cup of tea, but I own and love all of those comics.
If you don't have it, try and track down the one below...same idea of the Marvel and DC ones (A bunch of short pieces by various comic writers and artists, most of these "indie" creators) and just as good.

What's wrong with writers and artists wanting to donate their time and talent to help raise money for a good cause? Even Kevin Smith wrote a story in one of the books.

I don't think anyone here has told HOSP that he shouldn't have it (the sculpture) or should get rid of it...just that some of us wouldn't choose to own it ourselves. I just don't like those kind of figurines, no matter what they're of.
And I gave him props on the comics, dammit!

Time to clear stuff up:
1)I didn't ask for it, my mother thought I would like it. I have some friends and family who are firefighters who were down there on 9/11 and got out safe. I have a cousin who is a retired cop and he went down to do the search and rescue and was there for the first week. When the picture that inspired the statue first appeared it really moved me. My mother thought I would like it. And I have it out more out of respect for her. The day of the Oscars she came to my house, put everything out, and threw out all of the boxes and styrofoam. I think it was $75 if I remember.
2) The comics, which are more artwork and single page tributes then stories, I just put because I felt awkward about the statue. I'll bring them out to an event if you would like to see them and get a better idea. There was one comic that Marvel put out that I didn't agree with at the time and didn't get. It had Spiderman witnessing what happened and then trying to save people. They said that since the comic is based in New York City, spiderman would attempt to save people. I think their heart was in the right place, but it was too much for me to take.

I guess it's in the eye of the beholder. Would I have one, no? Am I "offended" by it, of course not. What I am offended by was all the people who were selling souvenirs at Ground Zero. I was offended by all the street vendors who were selling pictures of the Trade Center on fire. I was even more offended by the rubes who were buying all that crap.
That made me hate mankind just a little more.

Yeah, I work near Ground Zero now and they have these middle eastern guys selling crystal figures of the towers and books of pictures of what hppened that day, even with pictures of the planes hitting the towers. It took all my strength to not throw these guys through the tables.

Actually, they handled it pretty decently...he WASN'T able to save anyone, it was reflecting the hoplessness everyone felt watching the Towers fall. The focus of the story was the everday people that came together to attempt to search through the rubble afterwards, and how they're the TRUE heroes, not some guy in a big costume.
Though the whole bit with Dr. Doom crying was pretty fucking ghey.
