I cannot wait to see this movie. Good cast BUT I am not a huge fan of Jim Carey especially in his more dramatic introspective type roles. The film has great potential but can he pull it off? I hope so. I'm also having a hard time with him and Kate Winslet together. Odd.
Elijah Wood playing a scumbag should be amusing.

Homophobe much? Wow, some past issues need to be cleared out for someone...
Anyway: I think it's the infectious enthusiasm of ELO's awesome "Mr. Blue Sky" that makes the trailer look good; and I think it's gonna suck out loud.
But anything to get ELO played is fine by me...

I rate my desire to see a film based on how bad I think I can whup the cast's ass. Not individually, mind you, on aggregate, as a whole. Like this film for instance, I think Jim Carrey could be a little trouble, he's tall, wirey, agile. He has slowed down a bit with age, but he's still got the reach on me. I could see him giving me some problems. But that's balanced out with Kirsten Dunst. She's got nothing; I could take her ass anytime. Elijah Wood, as as been demonstrated elsewhere on this site, is a whiny little pussy faggot. I know he faced off against Sauron, but that was just a movie. Plus the fact he's only 4'3" tal. I would beat the hell outta him while eating a sandwhich. The dark horse here is Kate Winslet. In one word, beefy. She's short, but broad. Once she gets all of that weight moving behind her fist, I bet she packs a punch. I know she packs a lunch, maybe 2. That leaves Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson. After 'Normal' I know Wilkinson's a pushover, and I never heard of Ruffalo, so he doesn't worry me either.
Altogether, I think I could easily take the cast of "Eternal Sunshine". I say 2 thumbs up.

Michael Gondry also directed a music video (by Polyphonic Spree) for the film; you can see it here (http://www.eternalsunshine.com/music_video.html).
I read the screenplay a while back and was very impressed. Then I saw the trailer with "Mr. Blue Sky" in (Charlie Kaufman films love that song, don't they?) and was quite intrigued. I'll be seeing it sometime this weekend, I'm sure of it.

It's a Charlie Kaufman thing (Being John Malkovitch, Adaptation) I would imagine, he writes head trips and romantic angst for the intellectual we all want to relate to. I think his stuff is brilliant but as far as making a fine entertaining movie, it's a chore. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is his second collaboration with director Michael Gondry (Human Nature, Bjork videos) and it is for the most part a captivating effort, casting an ensemble group of actors including Jim (Earth Girls R Easy) Carrey and Kate Winslet as Joel and Clementine (lovers that find it hard to love). It is Carrey's finest acting and it is the best choice as an outside chance role.
The story is sort of 'Annie Hall' written by P.K. Dick, a mind tripping comedy- drama for the lonely people. Joel and Clementine meet one day on the L.I. beach in the winter and become close in one day. He is shy and she is a whackjob neurotic. The next thing you see is 2 men coming into Joel's home and begin to wipe out his memories of Clementine with a head helmet brain eraser thing. It seems that Joel and Clementine have been lovers for two years and had each other erased from memory but met up again and fell in love all over again...problem. Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson at his best) has a clinic that specializes in erasing memories.
The complex timeline is hard to follow in this story but it is original and fast but it is not all that funny, quirky and smart but not big on laughs. Very much like 'American Splendor' was entertaining. I did like the subplots with Kirsten Dunst (doing a neat panty dance on the bed) and Elijah Wood. It is an arthouse movie for Kaufman fans but it's not a Jim Carrey movie. Take it for what it is and enjoy.

BUT I don't know why he is getting such props. Yeah his acting was impeccable but just because he's able to play another part other than his retarded self he should get an Oscar? I thought thats what actors did.... played different characters.

I dont know why, but it reminds me of Leslie Nielson. He has done a bunch of comedy movies later in his life, but when I see an earlier movie when he is a straight guy, I keep getting ready to laugh and when nothing happens I get dissapointed. I guess Jim is typecast as a comedy guy (Im sure to his dismay) and when he does serious roles, it doesnt work for him as well as when he does comedy.

Although I've heard there really is a good buzz about this new movie for him, I think it is a problem for Jim Carrey. Especially if he intends to be able to crossover into dramatic acting and show his versatility. I think Robin Williams has been able to do it successfully by much to his own talents as an actor in being able to do dramatic roles, and being smart in picking the right movies. Movies like Good Will Hunting, One Hour Photo, Insomnia, and Seize the Day have helped him show his range. Carrey needs to do the same if he intends to break away from being typecast.

I really, really liked it, but it didn't *stick* with me the way "BEING JOHN MALKOVICH" did. Maybe with repeated viewings it will get like that.
Not only was Kate hot, but she was brilliant as her character; Jim Carry was really good too, but he's shown over the years he can handle drama (didn't he do a TV movie about a teen with AIDS back in the 80s???) Kirsten Dundst impressed me, and Elijah "I Give Reesh" Wood was perfect as the asshole.
Speaking of Kate, has anyone else seen HEAVENLY CREATURES?!? If you want to see something that will freak your ass out, rent this early 1994 film from Hobbit-dude, Peter Jackson, about two girls who plan the murder of one of their mothers - based on a true story, one of the girls actually achieves fame later in life. I agree with Curtoid, but I'll take it a step further in that it did 'stick' with me, though that is probably because of a lot of things that are going on in my personal life right now really seemed to echo on the screen. The flashbacks to the bad parts and the good parts of their relationship seemed genuine and relatable. The sequence of the flashbacks was great; the director really has you feeling for Carrey's character for having to deal with this out of control bitch, but when he unfolds the good stuff they had together, you can really see why everything was worthwhile.
Going to talk about the ending now....
Also alot of times, movies are great, but they keep gooooinnngg with the ending (AI for one). This felt like this would be one of those flicks, but I felt it ended perfect... When Winslett's character worries that they were destined to end together miserably because they already knew how they would end up feeling about each other down the road, and Carrey's character simply responds "That's okay"; it's perfect.
Like I said, maybe it was a more personal thing for myself, but I really enjoyed it.

this was probably my favorite movie of at least the last 5 years. Maybe because Jim Carrey's character seemed to mirror my own feelings so much (maybe sadly, in the beginning he literally says things that I have said before). I actually felt the ending couldn't really live up to how good the beginning and middle were for me.
Also there were people behind me that seemed to think the exact same things that I thought, sayign them before i could whisper them to my friend. That was kinda surreally (i don't think that's a word) enjoyable. So maybe it was just me and my experience. {shrug}

I just saw this movie and I can't believe how much I liked it. I liked Being John Malkovich in a weird way, though not nearly as much as I liked this one. I think it was smart, unusual, and put together very well. I remember reading an article on the movie in Premier and wanting to see it, but by that time it was pretty much out of the theatres. I picked it up yesterday on DVD and think it's one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies now. Not in the same sense of Ace Ventura, or Me Myself and Irene, but in a more of a way that shows me what a developed actor he has become. I know he's wanted a movie like this for a while to show this to people and this was the perfect vehicle for him to do this. I had a vague idea of what this movie was about, and I found it to be smarter than I thought it would be. It's not your ordinary movie, it's more than that. Not to compare it to Lost in Translation, but it had a oddly similar feel to it. Maybe it's a trademark of Focus Features films or something but I liked everything about it. Plus, I found Kate Winslet hot. I think she looks hotter in red hair than blue hair though. Plus anytime you add David Cross into the mix it's always good.
