Im looking to buy one ao I can use the net in my bedroom on another desktop comp. WE dont want to run any wires or drill any hole since my mother is putting the house up for sale soon. Now whats the difference between B and G routers? And someone was telling me about a product that you can plug inot the electrical socket that will work as the same as a regular router

Def go with a G router. They are faster, and you will notice the speed on certain downloads. The price difference is not that bad, and the performance gain is def. worth it. Do you have a cable modem? wherever the modem is, is where the router will have to be. THen you will need to put wireless cards in each of the computers. its really simple.

I hate to steal the thread, but I have a router related question.
Let's say I have a wired router. Is there any way to get a wireless transmitter (that you'd plug into the router) that transmits to a wireless reciever, or would I have to buy a whole other wireless router?

Satcam:

go to wireless answers (www.linksys.com)

I install wireless networks for home and business. This should answer all of your questions and they are virtually plug and play.

Well my question was based on the fact that I already have a router, and it's my second. I don't really feel like spending another $50 on a new router. Anyway, thanks for the link.

Sat you can do that. You would need to plug a port from the wired router into a link on the wireless router. It will then become a wireless access point.

Go with a 802.11g router, as previously recommended. It'll be faster for your laptop. I recommend Linksys. It's too bad they don't make the cable modem/wireless router combo any more.. saves desk space and all that.

As far as a wirless card for your laptop, gotta go with an Orinoco Gold card which has a little slot to add an extra antenna for even more range. The best.

get this (http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=610&scid=35)

This will be your (a) wireless g router, (b) be a 4 port wired router, (c) connect directly to your cable modem.

Def go with a G router. They are faster, and you will notice the speed on certain downloads.

unless your internet connection is more than 11 Mbps you won't have a faster connection to the internet. So B vs G doesn't mean much. But if you have or plan to have more than one computer and you share files in any way than you will want G (54Mbps).

Let's say I have a wired router. Is there any way to get a wireless transmitter (that you'd plug into the router) that transmits to a wireless reciever, or would I have to buy a whole other wireless router?

you won't be saving much money, Wireless routers are getting really cheap even for 802.11g. Plus you'll save space and electricity.

I'd recommend Linksys as well, I've set up a bunch of different models in homes and small buisnesses and never had any issues.

If you do go with 802.11g be sure all your wireless cards on all PCs are g. If you have any b on the network all links will be bumped down to 11 Mbps.

And turn on WEP!
