View Full Version : WoW! I have ALOT of crap!

I've lived in my apartment for about 14 years. I bought it in 1997 (just so I wouldn't have to move; actually, it was a good deal) and it just amazes me the useless stuff I own and how hard it is for me to part with shit.
Today I was in "purge" mode. I filled about 3 garbage bags worth of junk. It doesn't even make a dent! I'm a sentimental person. Even though I have nice pots and pans, dishes, and silverware, I find it hard to part with the stuff from my parents' house since that's all I have left of them. I'll pick up an old pot (good quality from the old days) and remember Sundays when my dad would cook.
It's hard for me to streamline my life. I was "good" when I was in Mexico. I didn't buy any chachkis. I'm so done with buying crap when I'm on vacation!
I need a make-over by the Queer Eye guys.
I just don't want to be the woman who died alone with a bunch of cats and a 30 year collection of newspapers and rubberbands!
:)
I feel a bit better now!

I know exactly how you feel. I save a lot of things too.
I have letters from high school, newspapers from the day my nephews were born, a bag of my own hair the first time I shaved my head, all of my english writing samples from first grade to my senior year, a VHS tape of Wayne Grtezky's last game ever and tons more of sentimental things.
I would never dream of throwing these things out

that's all that matters!
one thing i've noticed over the last 18 years is "the more room you got, the more useless stuff you hold onto" It feels good to have a little time in our 'very busy' lives to reorganize and seperate the junk from the good stuff and then throw that junk away...

I too have a lot of crap. Most of it is old stuff I had to take with me since I lost "storage space" when my parents sold their house. I'm too much of a pack rat to go through it and throw stuff away.

"the more room you got, the more useless stuff you hold onto"
Truest words ever posted. I bought a loft this past summer, at least partly on the supposition that the open space would provide some relief from the clutter of living in tighter quarters. I even packed a few steamer trunks full of old books and stuff and stored them in my parents' basement to get a shiny clean start, yet my place persists in looking like a fucking flea market. I try the garbage bag routine every so often too, but that seems to provide some unconscious stimulus to acquire more shit.

Really, dont you people realize you should be vetting observations about your personal habits against thirty year old comedy routines?

Are you sure? Because it sounds, to me at least, like vintage Carlin; unfunny drivel disguised as wit and unconventional wisdom.

My apt isn't THAT bad. It's relatively easy to walk around in my apartment.
NOW, when I was in HS? Ugh! My dad took pictures of my room and showed them to his friends at work. They were speechless!
I actually still have one picture. Clothes everywhere. Desk drawers open. Books and crap on the floor. The highlight? The Police 8-track in my stereo.
Classic!

I'm the same way Alice. I save EVERYTHING, magazine clippings, band pictures all stored in huge mailing evelopes. Gift bags full of cards, deflated ballons, gift boxes and even the string used to wrap the presents. I still have a bag full of notes, hall passes and detention slips from Sophmore year.
Every year i clean my room out and a little bit of everything gets thrown away. I figure by the time I'm 45 i'll have a free shelf.

in my shed, garage, and basement i have tools, screws and boxes of nails that were passed down from my grandfather and uncles to my dad and to me... one thing that bugs me a 'little' is knowing i'll never use up all of these items and they will be around long after i'm gone...
unless i toss them which i hope to do...

When I was a meter reader and had to go into hundreds of houses a day, I saw some shit that would make you want to puke. There was this one house with an old lady that collected stacks and stacks of newspapers and magazines and stuff. The whole house was full and there was maybe 2 feet of space to walk from the front door to the kitchen and steps and there was dust everywhere and like 8 cats and a dusty old golden retriever too. The place was a silverfish breeding ground! Another house I went to was a home for retarted people and it was even worse because it was food containers, knee deep with no way to walk around but to step through it, skeeved me out! My old apartment had alot of stuff and when I moved out I just tossed everything I had collected and now this place is spartan. I still have some junk, but its not anywhere near what I had. It was hard throwing it all out (some stuff was even new, unopened) but I acted like as if I had a fire and all my stuff was gone. Its amazing the extremes that people will live in. Other houses I was in had nothing in them, just a tv in the corner and patio furniture. There was this one house with an old sick lady who was "taken care of" by a nurse who would toss all the old ladys soiled clothing and bed linnens down the basement and probably did one wash every 2 months and the stink was so overpowering that I walked out of there, still smelling it for hours, it was sickning. Remember; vermin love a lot of stuff to hide in....

When I had to track down someone in the projects in Newark, N.J. One apartment I went to was filled with garbage- almost to the ceiling! The sink was full of dirty dishes and the table and stove full of freaking junk. Also, there were roaches galore everywhere. And during the summer time- you wouldn't want to be there due to the smell.
