I want to get a pair of these 2 way radios to be used in the city, on trips, and on my college campus but I dont have much money.
Does anyone have/use these? and what kind should I get?
I don't know anything about them.

Do you mean walkie-talkies?

Or if you want to go really old-school...

I have Motorola ones. The different models are different prices depending on the features they have. You should be able to get a pair of them for around $50, at least that's what I paid for mine about 5 years ago.

However, they won't work that well in the city, probably no more than a block or two. All the buildings and stuff get in the way. OTOH I've gotten about 10 miles on them when I was rock climbing and up on top of a mountain. I thought I was talking to my partner at the base and accdentally found myself talking to someone about 10 miles away at the post office in town.

Cool Too Cute!

Look on them, does it say anywhere about the output? 4 Watts is popping in my head..

Wow, this should be a show segment on R+F. Remember that first Walkie-Talkie? Holy Moly I thought it was the coolest invention EVER. Of course, immediately conspiring with friends to see how we could fuck witth people. Ok we didn't use that term when we were eight.

Anyway I never got into CB. I do the multi-channel scanner thing and the shortwave thing, but that's just receiving.

Hmm, are these in the citizen's band? Wow I should google but i'm too lazy. Anyway; I think 4 watts was/is the maximum effective radiated power of these things. Which would explain your city/mountain differences.

Oh and to further de-rail this:

It should maybe be a thread, but usually when I think that. It sucks.

Did anyone ever make a radio? The Crystal Radio I mean? That was one of the things that nudged me into science. You got the little kit; you wind a tube with wire and there's a few resistors or a diode, but it's not much at all. Not even powered. You strung out a wire, moved it around and moved the thing on the radio, wasnt even a dial i think you used the coil as a tuner, and a tiny earpiece...

ok it sounds gay and trite; but to me, that's the true Magic. the real magic. To be able to string some metal together, hang a wire off of it, and hear human voices from it.

Did you know the first radios [and TVs even] *terrified* some people?

Holy Cow, crystal radios!!!! I built one of those when I was a kid and used to pick up WOR here in the city. As I got older, I got deeper into radio theory, building a superhetrodyne receiver, a 2 meter transmitter(CW only) various test equipment etc. Now, I'm lucky I know how to turn on my computer!!!! Go figure!!!!

A 2-way radio story you guys'll enjoy:
OK, about a year ago I'm scanning the 2-way radio line for some conversations I can pick up on. Anyway, every sunday (yes, EVERY sunday) at a certain time, some big black guy would ALWAYS be on. Now see, we basically became friends. I was his nigguh, and he was always looking for his bitchez. I will always remember this guy. I actually I have a conversation recorded between me and him. Word up to his dead goldfish.

You can probably find these radios (FRS-band) for anywhere from $20/pair through $200 per pair. Like TooCute said, it depends on the features and the power that they put out. If you're planning on using them in the city, line-of-sight will be your major obstacle. Higher amounts of power can increase the distance they transmit, even in amongst tall buildings, but you will probably not get more than a mile at most (assuming a 1W transmitter)

2 meter transmitter(CW only)

Mike, most FRS radios are either 1/2 watt or 1 watt transmitters. You can still get quite a few miles on a watt, though. My 2M Ham HT can hit 10 miles on 250mW without a repeater, but with an external J-pole antenna. The rubber-duck it comes with limits it to about 2-3 miles at 250mW. At full power (5W), I could reach the former WTC repeater on the duckie.
