negotiating a new job

consider this: the job i'm in right now, we'll compare it to playing high school ball. i interviewed at 2 places this week- one would be like going to a d1 school and the other is like going straight to the majors.

now say i'm offered both positions and am forced to decide, how do i go about getting what's best for me?

which one do you think will give you an oppertunity to move up without have to sell your soul or work major OT? are the salaries similar? Also, what about location. All these would be huge factors for me.

job a: very nice pay, traveling 2x+ a month(nationally), huge amounts of work, awesome experience for future job prospects, 45 minutes from home.

job b: less money but still decent(plus a yearly bonus) really, really cool environment, much less stress, 25 minutes from home.

true, somewhat. since i'm only used to playin hs ball, i don't know how to go about getting the most money, best benefits, negotiate if both offer. and in what time frame?

your best bet would be to get the major league job first. then maybe you can bring it up during salary negotions with the smaller company. maybe they will see you are being sought after by a bigger firm and not wanting to loose you, make a nice offer.

Do you plan to spend the rest of your career at either company?

If so, then pick the one that offers you the best lifestyle, and more imporantly life, over the long haul.

Of course you are the one that determines what is the "best" lifestyle. Is it personal time, time with family, benefits, education, retirement, blah blah blah.

If you do not see yourself at either company over the long haul or even for more than a couple of years, then go with the one that will help transition you to the next step in your career. Not just salary-wise, but experience and recognition-wise.

Many people work at Disney knowing that they are not going to be paid the highest dollar, but the name recognition sitting on the resume pays off a lot more when looking to move to another company.
