I know, I know. Episodes I and II were shaky, at best. Lucas has come extremely close to destroying any and all of my childhood fantasy, and I'm sure a lot of others' as well. Hack writing, hack directing, 'empty calorie' CGI, egregious over-hype and over-marketing: All these things have lead to the the near demise of Star Wars. The pulse is weak, breathing is labored, there may be nothing left but to pull the plug. That all being said, and I'm as jaded and cynical as anyone about this, there may, repeat MAY, be a light at the end of this dark, dark tunnel.
If you ever wielded a lightsaber made from a flashlight and a plastic tube, made an attack run in your 'X-Wing' bike down the Death Star trench of your street, or trained in the Dagobah swamp that was your backyard, you cannot help but get a little excited about this picture. C'mon, let go your conscious self and reach out with your feelings. When I saw this pic some of that old magic was sparked. I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but for just a moment I felt like a kid again.

lucas was on the road to ruin with the stupid ewoks. yeah, episode I made it worse, but qui-gon and darth maul were good to watch. and the clonetroopers were great in II, wouldnt you agree?
i dont think hayden's got the acting chops to pull off a miracle for III, but i'm still gonna watch it on the first day and i'll still love it. IV and V were great movies, and maybe lucas just isnt good enough to live up to them.

III looks like it can still be good. I've seen some makeup tests of what happens to anakin to force him into the Darth Vader Lifesupport suit. Episode III should be okay, but it could never live up to The first 2 films (meaning the first two films released, Star Wars and Empire Stikes Back)

There are four main problems with these first three movies:
* It's connect-the-dot story telling, at best. We know the story. There are no surprises what-so-ever. No classic "Luke I am your father" moment that makes you shriek and laugh.
We knew in Episode 1 that Anakin would be brought into the Jedi by the end of the movie with Obi Wan as a mentor; we knew in Episode 2 he would fall in love and hook up with the mother of Luke and Lea by the end of the movie; and we know that in Episode 3 something really bad is going to happen to push him over the edge and turn him into Darth and by the end of the movie Luke and Lea will be born and then split up to save them. The only thing we don't know is Amadala's fate, but do we really, really care?
In many ways, those parts of this story was already told, better! Instead of just hashing it all out for us to see, why not be clever?? Throw us a curve ball that we didn't see coming, or tell it from a completely different perspective?
The big surprise in Episode 1 was suppose to be that Anakin was conceived by an immaculate conception, and in Episode 2 we were supposed to be shocked when his arm got cut off and that Master Yoda knows some mad monkey kung fu.
This trilogy should have begun already into Episode 2, with the war beginning - we don't need to know that Jar Jar was responsible for the whole mess. It moves the story up a bit, and that way Episode 3 could be devoted to Darth being Darth, not some bad actor whining and scowling.
* The plotting ties in with my second point, which was the actual writing of the dialog! Eeeeesh! It was painful to hear them say those lines; anything with the kid in Part 1, and anything with The Lovers in part 2.
* Lucas should not be allowed behind the camera to direct them. I know he can't be stopped, that he can buy and sell pretty much everyone and everything he wants, but come on...the man can not direct actual human actors without them coming across as inanimate objects. Even with the original STAR WARS Carrie Fisher had shirts made up that simply said "Meat" because that's how she, and the other actors, felt being directed by him.
* No respect for the fans. By delivering a lousy product, and tampering with the originals, he continues to show a level of contempt for the people who made him very rich. In many ways I've already recaptured "the magic" of my youth through the LORD OF THE RINGS films, so I'm not going to be expected too much. I just don't really care about these characters, or the story.
All of that said...of course I'll be there for the opening of it. Sadly, it will be a relief to finally be done with them.

Curtoid, well said. I couldn't agree with you more.
Except I won't be there on Day One of the opening. The smell of geek sweat from thousands of unwashed theatregoers is going to make those theatres uninhabitable until a BioHazard team comes in and cleans them out.

I've been holding out hope of III being bad-ass and will continue to do so. I was pleased with episode I (with the obvious exception of Jar Jar), knew II would be too much about "the love story" to really be more than a set-up movie, although Ani going medieval on the Sandpeople was pretty damn cool, and I look for more of that kind of intensity to carry III to being a damn good movie.
ps: BlakJeezis, you have quite a way with words, my friend. Well done.

I think with the new trilogy it is was probably one of the most anticipated movies of all time. (16 years in the making)
The new trilogy would of had to better than the original trilogy for people to accept it as "good movie". But, I think a lot of people's anticipation and expectations were too high for the movie and many left feeling unsatisfied and did not feel how they felt during the original 3.
If these new movies were out today without the original trilogy years ago maybe people would have been better recieved.
Also, Episode 1 and 2 both rank up as one of the highest grossing movies to date so financially it's not a failure.
Movies like the Matrix and Lord of the Rings, I personally when I went to see them not having any real expectations for but after leaving I thought they were excellent movies. Although, the Matrix for me went the route of most other sequels but Lord of the Rings maintained the excellence of the first.
When the Hobbit comes out years from now, won't most people have high expectations for it because of the successs of Lord of the Rings?
I agree saying that the new Star Wars movies don't compare with the original three but I did enjoy them after I stopped comparing them to the Originals.

This is a perfect opportunity to give a little lesson. So, those of you out there who are looking to learn 'Geek', pay attention. It's not so much it's own language. It uses the same words as English, but it's the subtleties and nuanced meanings of the words that change. The purpose of normal human language is to exchange information, in one way or another, with someone else. 'Geek' is all about one-upsmanship. It's there, you just gotta read between the lines:
JustJon said, "Nah, I saved that for the pics of Natalie Portman and the chick who looks like Angelina Jolie that were on the same page when I saw it last night."
Now to the average human being that is merely Jon making a statement giving us a little of his opinion and the idea the there were some pics of hot chicks with the pic of Anakin.
To me, and every other geek, it goes much deeper. The fact that the other pics were of chicks isn't all that important. It helps that they are chicks, but the pics could be of anything, vehicles, costumes, set ideas, not all that important. What is important is that there were other pics to see. By metntioning the other pics, Jon lets us know that he's seen more than we have, he's a little more 'inside' than we are, and he knows a little more about the film than we do.
The second half of his statement is even more telling. "on the same page when I saw it last night". This let's us all know that not only does Jon know more than us, it's also old news to him. He knew all this yesterday. It's soooooo not even a scoop any more. "Yaaaawn, most boring post ever!"
If I were to uphold my end of the 'Geek' conversation, my first order of business would be to save face. I'd have to let everyone know that I'd also seen the pictures yesterday, but for some reason (insert lame excuse) I didn't make the post until today. I would also have to redeem myself by perhaps making reference to some long forgotten indie type film of Natalie Portman's and say that she looked hotter in that. Not because she does or doesn't look hotter in it, just so that it's known that I know something that not everyone else does.
That's it. Geek lesson over for today.
Edit: This doesn't just apply to Star Wars or film geeks, oh no. Across geek species and genus the same rulkes are in effect, with only slight changes. With music geeks, the one-upsmanship comes from knowing or being a fan of the more obscure band. With gaming geeks it's high scores and cheat codes, sports geeks it's knowing stats and the score of the 1938 NFL Championship Game, etc.
