ESPN Story (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=1754963)
After seeing this on SportsCenter this morning I was quite terrified. Especially after seeing the blatantness of the face-plant to the ice. Yes, it was revenge for an apparent clean check delivered to markus Naslund back in February which consequently gave naslund a concussion and sidelined him for a number of games. But still, check Moore, lure him into a fight, do it the clean way and make him pay like that. Bertuzzi damn near (well i guess he did) broke his neck. A snapped vertabre I believe it is along with a concussion and Moore is sidelined likely the rest of the season.
I am all for fighting and the brutality of ice hockey (I grew up with the Broad Street Bullies mind you) but there is a way to go about it in a somewhat clean way. This incident here just looked very VERY premeditated and may have changed Steve Moores life forever. I sure hope he pulls through.
The fighting topic was also a heated discussion here on the Philly Sports Talk 610 WIP today. Is it a part of the game or has it become part of it rather and does it entice you to watch more if say there is a heated battle of a game on or should it be taken away from the game completely?
I for one enjoy the good ol' hockey fight. As far back as i can remember it is what drew me to the game. In 1984 I distinctly remember my first game I watched was a bloodbath between the Flyers and Capitals at the Cap Centre. I was in love! This year aftter a long hiatus I started watching hockey again and some of what I see today is reminiscent of what I grew up on. Like I said, I love the fighting and hell, even the rare brawl and goalie fights RULE! Just keep it somewhat clean and leave the dirty stuff away from the game. The McSorley cheap shots and Bertuzzi face plants have to go. And as much as I loved it at the time, the Hextall goalie slash tot he back of the leg has to go too.
Oh yeah, EDIT: I would say suspend him for the rest of the season. Then give him some jailtime.

He needs to go to jail. What he did had nothing to do with hockey. He snuck up behind him, dropped his stick, held the back of the other guys jersey and attacked him.
Todd is a pussy and a coward. If you want to get payback be a man and challenge him to a fight, don't jump the guy from behind.

I was a Bertuzzi fan until I saw that. Fucking asshole. Supposedly, bertuzzi tried calling moore to apologize or something. Deserves to be suspended indef. I cringed each time they showed how Moore fell.
Gonna be interesting next time Bertuzzi plays against the Avs and hear the home crowd boo the living shit outta him

Revenge is one thing. I think its great when a guy stands up for his teammate. But what Bertuzzi did was absolutely disgusting. Just suspend the rat bastard for the rest of the season and the playoffs and then let him get his ass kicked when he comes back next season...if there is a next season...

Disgusting. He could have ended his career right there. Suspend him for 2 years at least. The NHL needs to start enforcing shit more. But knowing how Cambell is, he'll probably get 20 games. I would be a better guy for the job.

It was an incredible act of cowardess. He should be arrested, heavily fined, and maybe even suspended for the season.

Id like to have that kind of spark on the Islanders. Glad we got Webb back.
First of all, nobody should be arrested for anything that happen during a pro game of any kind unles they do something totally out of line. that means for example kicking someone in the face with your skates when theyre down. wrapping your hands around someones throat and choking them. taking a bat during a baseball brawl and swinging it at someone.
Not punching someone.
The only reason this is any kind of issue is because the guy got seriously hurt. If Moore got up and starting fighting, NOTHING would have happened to Bertuzzi. I havnt watched a lot of hockey this year, but in the few games ive seen, I've seen something worse that that. Purinton got Cairins down before he even knew he was there, and kept swinging at his face (3 or 4 times) before the goalie jumped on him. Cairins wasnt hurt at all but its not the point. The point here is that in the one situation you had a guy sitting on the ice defensless, getting punched in the face by someone thats deliberatly trying to hurt him. In Bertuzzis case he no doubt took a cheap shot, by you cant possibly believe he thought it would turn out to be more then a fight. He actually followed Moore for about 20 seconds and kept pulling on his jersey trying to get him to fight but he wouldnt, so he clocked him. theres no way he thought a punch to the face, with his glove on mind you, would turn into a fractured neck. the driving his head into the ice is debatable, the man was falling all on his own, and Bert was right on him.
Suspend him until Moore comes back. If he "retires", 40 game minimum including playoff games.

Ok, maybe I am just blind and thought for a minute that it looked like the WWF on skates. Hell, Bertuzzi could get a WWF contact for that quality of a face plant. He had his arm around his head and drive it into the ice. Again, maybe I am blind but I know what I saw.
I see the Purinton and Cairns thing a but different casue wasn't Purinton kind of like going and intimidating Cairns and then skating away and then doing it again and then when Cairns got him he just pounded the shit out of him? I mean he could have fought back in that case instead of going turtle.

Ok at first i thought it was debatable as to if he drove the face into the ice, but now its not. If Fluff saw it as intentional, then it must not have been based on how you saw the Cairins-Purinton incident. Purinton came at Cairins from behind as he was facing his own goaltender after play was called. Cairins never knew he was ther until he got a shot in the face and wound up on his ass as he was trying to drop the gloves and grab Purinton. Purinton had his jersey as he sat on his ass and took shot after shot at his face until about 2 seconds later when Garth Snow jumped on his back. Cairins never turtled. He never even had a chance to.
You might be thinking of the next weeks game when Purinton turtuled and Cairins stopped punching him so he could get up and fight.

I strongly feel any hockey player who assaults another should be arrested. whether it is a punch or stick. if this occurred with any two people outside the rink they would be brought up on charges. I don't believe in any sport except boxing that fighting should be accepted. BUT, the league and players have to stand up against it. It makes you think that the League feels most people would stop attending or watching games if they stopped most if not all of the fighting. They could do it with tough penalties like a 3 strike rule. 1 fights and your out for 10 games. 2 fights 30 games. 3 fights and you're out for a full season.
Many players are scarred for life. I wonder if they all feel it was worth it after their careers are over?

Great idea Funk, then when the fighting stops you have people poking eyes out with stick blades behind the play when the officials arent looking. What are you gonna do in that case? You wanna have a police investigation in the middle of every game the officials miss an injury in?

You cant retire somebody because they dished out a cheap shot. Like I said, if the dude got up without being hurt, nobody would say shit about the incident. With your plan some of the best pro athletes would be gone right now. Off the top of my head you got Pedro, Sapp and Ron Hextall. Theres dozens of other If I thought about it for a few minutes.

Folks over at the Canucks forum keep saying that it was wasnt Bertuzzi's fault for "fracturing" Moore's neck and claimed it was from the dog pile of Avs and Canucks. They also claim that it was also Nikolishin(SP?)'s fault for it. No surprise that their own fans would back them up

Agreed. For some reason I don't quite understand, the sports guys get a pass, but the people in the parking lot get arrested.
Just a punch. Fine. What's the purpose of a punch? In boxing, as in any punch; the aim is to disrupt the nervous system. A Hard punch aims to disrupt the nervous system to a point of collapse; the knock out.
So; punching is an accepted common practice in hockey. I ask a simple Question: Why?

Because its a physical game involving razor sharpe blades and sticks. Take fightint out and everytime someone gets pissed theyll be using these other objects more often to get revenge for a cheap shot. Like Bertuzzi did. Only his was still a punch but it wasnt a fight. Somethin else is the hits from behind into the boards. Those can be nasty too.
I think theyll review it next season incase they only play like 4 playoff games. If they go to the finals, he'll start the season no prob.

The suspension, ok.
The fine, hefty but I still agree.
But they shouldnt fine the Cancuks! The main reason is because Crawford supports fighting...so what? Those are penalties. The NHL shouldnt be collection 250k from the club just because of what one player did.
Although it was uncalled for and most definetly wrong, Bertuzzi is still one of my favorite players and the playoffs wont be as fun without him.
