Playing Chess via mail

I was watching a couple of old t.v. shows (The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and Columbo) and each episode somehow involved playing Chess via mail (a person in the U.S. playing against a person in Russia/China or something). Before e-mail/on-line became a way of life, people did this- amazing! I find it a bit slow and tedious to play a game like chess this way. You really have to like chess to mail your move and await the other's person move to come back in the mail.

I guess it's like when people used to have pen pals but have e-mail pals on their buddy list.
